Exciting News from Friends of Napa County Animal Shelter! 🐾
We’re proud to officially launch our Behavioral Assistance Program (BAP) designed to give shelter dogs the tools they need to overcome challenges and thrive in loving homes.
From leash pulling and nipping to separation anxiety or learning to trust again, many dogs just need a little extra support. Through this program, they’ll receive personalized training — and, when needed, board-and-train care with Ruff Pup Canine Academy, led by Samantha and Bobby Lindquist, who bring over 15 years of expertise.
Our very first success story? Ronin! After completing training, he’s on his way to the Jefferson Working Dog Foundation in Oregon, where he’ll continue his journey as a police detection dog.
To keep this life-changing program going for other pups like Ronin, we need your help. Consider making a donation today — and be sure to note Behavioral Assistance Program or BAP so your gift directly supports this effort.
Together, we can give every “ruff pup” their happily ever after.

Foxtails, burrs, and thistles may seem harmless, but they can latch onto your pet’s fur, paws, nose, ears, eyes and even their mouth! 🌾
If a foxtail embeds itself, it can lead to painful infections. To keep your furry friend safe, always give them a thorough check after outdoor adventures and don’t forget between the toes!
A little extra attention goes a long way in protecting their health.

August 22nd is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day! 🐾
Our feline friends deserve the best care—just like us. Regular checkups help keep them healthy, happy, and purring for years to come.
Vet visits can catch small issues before they turn into big problems. Aim for yearly checkups, and for our senior kitties, a few extra visits go a long way.
Let’s show our cats the love they deserve with regular TLC at the vet!

Bringing a shelter pet home is such an exciting moment but it’s also a big transition for them. 🏡🐶🐱
Every animal adjusts at their own pace depending on their personality and past experiences.

Here are a few ways to help your new family member feel safe and supported:
✨ Give them time and space to settle in before introducing lots of new people.
✨ Create a routine—like regular walk times or feeding schedules—to build comfort and consistency.
✨ Be mindful of their triggers, and always keep doors and gates secure.

With patience, positivity, and love, your furry friend will soon feel right at home as part of the family. 🩵

Keeping Families Together, One Paw at a Time 🐾
Nothing is harder than watching a cherished pet suffer when their family can't afford critical medical care. At Friends of Napa County Animal Shelter, we believe no pet should have to be separated from the people who love them due to unexpected health challenges.
That’s why we created the Alumni Pets Medical Emergency Fund — a lifeline for pets adopted from the Napa County Animal Shelter. This fund helps cover urgent medical costs so adopted animals can remain safe, healthy, and right where they belong: home. 💙
Your support makes a lasting impact. Together, we can ensure love and care never get interrupted.

Hot Pavement, Happy Paws? Not Always! 🐾☀️
As temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Pavement can get dangerously hot, even on mild days—burning your dog’s sensitive paw pads in minutes.
Check the ground: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, skip the walk or find a grassy, shaded route.

Safe temps for dog walking 🌡️
Under 75°F – usually safe
75°F–85°F – caution, walk during cooler hours
85°F+ – high risk for burns and overheating

Best times to walk: Early morning or late evening when the ground is cooler.
Always bring water and watch for signs of overheating: excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.

Keep those paws safe and those tails wagging! 🐕💙

Chip Your Pet Before the 4th of July! 🎆
While we love celebrating Independence Day with fireworks and festivities, the 4th of July is also one of the most common days for pets to go missing. Loud noises and unfamiliar crowds can cause even the calmest pets to panic and run. 🐶💨🐱
Be prepared. A microchip is a simple, affordable way to make sure your pet can be quickly identified and reunited with you if they get lost.

June is National Microchip Month! 🐾🔍
Did you know that 1 in 3 pets will go missing at some point in their lives? A microchip is a simple, low-cost way to give your furry friend the best chance of making it back home if they ever get lost. 💙🏡
At FONCAS, we’re passionate about keeping pets safe and with the families who love them. Microchipping is quick, painless, and could make all the difference in a moment of crisis.

Take action this month and double-check your pet’s chip is registered and up-to-date!
