Over the past weekend, social media was flooded with alerts about 'Save This Life', a pet microchip company that suddenly ceased operations. As a result, their database is no longer accessible, meaning microchips registered with 'Save This Life' will not provide owner information when scanned. This situation has raised concerns about the traceability of pets registered with this company.

As we continue our series on strengthening the bond with your pets, we turn our attention to "courting your cat." While we at Napa Humane talk a lot about dog training, we don’t want to leave our curious, intelligent cat friends out. Cats can be taught fun tricks, just like dogs! Some of our recent cat clients certainly seem curious!

If you’re looking for a fun and easy trick to teach your cat, the cat fist bump is perfect!

𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐥𝐥 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝
-A small, light container (avoid heavy cups that might frighten your cat)
-Small, high-value treats (moisture-rich food is great for training if you feed dry food)
-A cat clicker (or substitute with a verbal "YES!")

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐦𝐩
Step 1: Place a treat in the container. When your cat paws at it, click or say "YES!" and reward them.
Step 2: Hold the cup in your hand while repeating the process.
Step 3: Cover the cup with your hand. Reward when your cat targets your hand instead of the cup.
Step 4: Remove the cup and turn your hand into a fist. Reward when their paw targets your fist!

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬
-Short and sweet: Cats have short attention spans, so keep sessions brief to maintain focus.
-Start small: Begin with sessions of 3-5 minutes, then gradually extend as your cat progresses.
-Observe your cat: If they seem disengaged or frustrated, end the session and try again later.
-Multiple sessions: Short, frequent training sessions work better than one long session.
-Positive reinforcement: Always end training on a positive note with a reward to keep your cat motivated.

Our Introduction to Dog Sports class is perfect for you! 🌟 What to Expect: We’ll introduce you and your dog to a variety of fun, engaging sports and activities designed to stimulate their mind and body! A Big Thank You to Community Cat Trappers! At Napa Humane, we deeply appreciate the tireless dedication, long hours, and hard work of community cat trappers. Your efforts prevent needless suffering and help control the growing population of homeless cats in our community. For years, our team has admired a large orange community cat we have affectionately nicknamed El Chapo. El Chapo was often spotted near our clinic. Last week, our staff was lending a hand to recover a wayward cat who escaped their carrier in our parking lot. In the process, they were surprised and delighted when the "wrong" cat initially entered the trap—it was El Chapo! El Chapo was neutered, vaccinated, and given time to recover at the clinic. Then our team bid him farewell, knowing he would return to his familiar territory healthier and ready to live his best life. To all the trappers out there—you are the unsung heroes in this effort. Thank you for the vital role you play in supporting community cats and giving them a chance at healthier, safer lives. Together, we’re making a difference!
