Beautiful season for being surrounded by goats as they munch on evergreen and we crunch our way on fallen leaves through picturesque meadows and woodland paths. The life our goats get to live at Hemlock Neversink is pretty magical. 🧡

Sorry for the back to back Hamilton posts, but his development of urinary calculi has really shook me, so@I’ve been spending some extra time with him (and, of course, Eliza) We do all the right things. We get the best hay, we don’t feed grain, we give them loose minerals with ammonium chloride, and have water tested. But we still had two cases of UC and that’s two too many. We raised Hamilton from five days old, so I have a very special connection to him. He is my kid, pun intended. 🤣 When I come up to see the big goats, he and Eliza come straight to me, and I get to spend some one-to-one time with them. Since Hamilton‘s been back, I’ve made a point of spending a lot of extra time with him. Partly out of my mama guilt that he was in Cornell veterinary hospital for 12 days and I wasn’t able to visit until his discharge because I was home caring for the other 34 goats here. But also because I want to make sure that he’s OK. As you can see, he’s doing such a great job with his meds! I can’t even believe it. He looks a little funky now with all of the shaved bits and yellow beard hairs, but that will all fade and then he will transform them into that stunning and mesmerizing all- white goat that I know and love.

Hamilton jumped right up for our hike yesterday and led the herd! So nice to see him back to his old self! Except for his poor yellow chin hairs stained by the medication he gets 2-3 times a day. He’s not a fan - but he’s a trooper! I made him promise to never scare me like that again. No more hospital visits please!

Hamilton is home! And a little more yellow. 😂 (the medication he is on dyes skin, hair and clothes bright yellow! 😛) His herd was VERY excited to see him back, but I think Hammy just wanted to settle in. More updates to come, but for now he’s doing great and we’re so happy to have him home!

I’m not sure what I love most about this picture. The handsome young artist, the amazing painting of Louis, or Louis’ smile! I love that our goats inspire others.

Happy hour for us is the time at the end of the day that we get to just sit with the goats for some undivided attention. Hamilton usually beelines it to me, but this time Eliza decided to snuggle in. Love how much they look forward to this time. Did you know that we do happy hour with our Airbnb guests? It’s pretty magical!

Having a particularly challenging day, but Ansel made everything better 🥰.

For the love of goats...

As a young girl, Meagan Frederick dreamed of being Snow White.....the woodland princess who communicated with the animals and whom the animals adored. Later, that looked a little more like Dr. Doolittle, a little more practical. Mostly because she can't really sing like Snow White. Lacking the skill set for becoming a veterinarian, she informally became the rescuer of all living creatures in her path. Often because animals found their way to her. Kittens dropped from the undercarriage of trucks at a stoplight in front of her car, puppies were discovered roadside in threat of being poisoned, stray dogs laid at her feet on island vacations... not to mention mice, birds, fish. Oh, and goats.

They wandered up the driveway of now, Frederick Farm, just 7 years ago. Actually, HE (Marvin) wandered. For those of you who know Mabel, she is our former sheep finally living with sheep friends that don’t push her around at Woodstock Farm Sanctuary! But we digress. Now home to five very loved (and very spoiled) goats, Frederick Farm is dedicated to maintaining a home and sanctuary to as many goats (and chickens, and dogs) as is manageable (and that Meagan’s husband will tolerate without threat of divorce). No, she did not dream of having multiple goats. But once you meet them and get to know them (and know about the horrors of animal agriculture and why they are in need of rescue and sanctuary) I think you would know why Frederick Farm is now operational and growing! Fully embracing the endearing title, “Crazy Goat Lady”, Meagan welcomes you to come visit Frederick Farm and discover your inevitable love of all things GOAT.
