The amount of people I've had allow their dog to run up to mine through a fence and on a leash lately is unreasonable. Unless you ASK permission to allow your dog to approach another dog, you DO NOT do it (side note: I never recommend it given barrier/territorial aggression and the flight or fight response on a leash causes stress to your dog). This is one of the main drivers for reactivity because it builds frustration (or a bad incident happens) which can cause them to become reactive/defensive. I don't care if your dog is friendly, mine is too but this is no better than a stranger running up on you with zero context of their intentions, it could go either way & of it goes bad, then what?

Don't be scared to be an advocate for your dog, the only people you're going to p**s off are those who don't know or respect boundaries & while it might cause a bit of discomfort in the moment, it'll be worth it.

Corso puppy training Tuesday 🐶

Early socialization is key. Don't let that be confused with going to dog parks and having incessant play dates or on leash greetings. Early socialization skills are best practiced on leash, learning to relax around other dogs and puppies. This helps prevent reactivity (including frustrated excitable reactivity which is the most common in my experience).

If your animals have any kind of firework anxiety start playing this on a low volume and gradually turn it up throughout the day 🎆 The more you do this, the better! This also works for thunderstorm anxiety, just look for "thunderstorm sounds for dogs" on YouTube and you're sure to find something 🐶
