Sweet Luna is learning Hand Targeting. It’s going to help her with her Recall training as well as give her family a fun way to redirect or reposition her whenever necessary.
Ok so why is Luna sitting and giving her paw instead of what we asked for: “Touch”?
This is a new behavior for Luna so she wasn’t sure. But look at the way her Dad just waits for her to figure it out WITHOUT repeating the cue. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This takes some patience. And it works! As you can see, Luna eventually responded with the correct behavior which is to touch her cute little nose to Dad’s hand on cue.
And because she took the time to think about it and was positively reinforced for the correct response, she became much quicker and more confident about it.

What’s something you can do to improve and strengthen your dog’s reliability with Recall (coming when called)?
Double whammy reinforcement!
What’s that, you ask? 🤔
Today we had a great example:
I called Rory away from a VERY interesting scent using my Recall cue. What were the 2 reinforcers?
1. He got a nice piece of sharp cheese for coming quickly.
2. I released him right back to continue exploring and sniffing the fascinating scent. My release cue is “ok”.
Powerful! 🧨👏🏼👏🏼
COUPLE OF TIPS:
🐾 Although this is great practice, Don’t over use this calling your dog off of “fun things”. I’m not trying to annoy Rory and want our walks to continue to be enjoyable for both of us.
🐾 Don’t call your dog to you unless you’re 95% sure he will be able to come with the current level of distraction/skill.

Does your dog do this?
Sometimes Rory just stops when we’re walking and looks around for a while or sniffs the air.
I could get annoyed and pull him along. OR……
I can give him the time and space he needs to process whatever it is in his environment that he’s concerned about in the moment.
Sometimes I don’t even know what he’s concerned about but in this case there was some roof construction going on and it sounded suspiciously like fireworks. 🧨 NOT his favorite! 😡
Because Rory was able to take the time to figure it out and not be forced closer, he felt safe to happily move on before too long. And doesn’t he look rather proud of his own bravery?! 😂
In this case he wasn’t overcome with fear or in a freak out. So he didn’t need anything more than time. If he had been really afraid I may have helped him by doing some counter conditioning (more on that in another post) and maybe move with him away from the “scary thing”.
What do you do when your dog just stops seemingly for “no reason”?

I laughed so hard at the end because I think Rory was hoping the doggie turned into his favorite ball instead! 😂😂
Hide the Toy is a fun game to play that lets your dog use his brain and sniffer to find the hidden item. Also builds confidence in your dog.
And it’s great Stay training practice. The reward for staying is that he gets the toy and we play chase or tug or another round of Hide the Toy.
Start easy and work up to longer stays and more challenging hiding spots.
The game is a wonderful way to tire your dog out when you can’t get out for a walk.

Rory’s morning greeting ritual every single day. 😂😂
I’m not quite there yet but I want to live my every day putting out this same happy energy. Once again Rory makes me want to be better. 🥰
Do you and your dog have a crazy greeting ritual? Or maybe a calm one? That’s lovely too!

Rory and I did our first agility class together. He got to be the demo dog here!
He started out a bit uncomfortable as you can see but by the end he was happily walking across an elevated plank, going through a tunnel and just having a ball.
The hardest part for Rory was staying calm in the crate while he waited his turn. ☺️
We may do more classes. Just for a fun thing for us to do together.
Thank you @thinkpawsitivedog for a great introduction to agility!
Who else has tried agility or other fun class with your dog? Was it a good experience?

First Wisconsin trail hike of the year.
Rory is one busy and happy boy with all the sights and smells.
I let him do all the sniffing he wants while reinforcing auto check-ins like this.
Periodically, (not too often), I also use a recall cue, “Rory, Come!” while he’s sniffing something interesting. The key here is to be almost 💯 sure he will be able to come with that level of distraction.
I also reinforce successful Recalls with something super high value to Rory in that setting. For Rory that would be chicken.
Also super important here is that after he comes to me and collects his chicken, I immediately release him back to sniffing whatever he was into.
Double reinforcer! So powerful for strengthening that reliable Recall.
I’ll try to capture exactly that on video next time.

Rory had the best time at @Let’sGoOut-SRB pet sitting in Santa Rosa Beach, FL while we visited with friends.
He made a lot of good friends during his stay. This is one of his new friends, Tito.
I think Rory might have accidentally got his paw peed on here. How would you caption his reaction? 😂😂
