Sago Palms are plentiful in our area and pets, especially dogs, may find them appealing to chew on.
‼️ All parts of this plant are highly toxic, with the seeds/nuts being the most toxic. The plant's primary toxin is cycasin. ‼️
Potential clinical signs of sago palm poisoning are:
➡️ Liver failure in dogs
➡️ Drooling
➡️ Vomiting
➡️ Diarrhea
➡️ Weakness
➡️ Ataxia
➡️ Seizures
➡️ Lack of appetite
➡️ Abnormal fluid accumulation in the abdomen
➡️ Abdominal pain
➡️ Lethargy
➡️ Jaundice
➡️ Tarry stools
If you have this plant in your yard, or in an area where your pet plays, please be extremely cautious. Should your pet chew on, or ingest, part of a sago palm, seek immediate veterinary attention.
