THOROUGHBREDS AND EX RACEHORSES
We are HUGE proponents of the breed! There are a lot of myths about ex racehorses in our community, maybe yours too! There are many worthwhile opportunities to learn about them here at Track to Trail.

We take in injured or neglect cases and provide rehabilitation. That can be both physical and emotional This sort of thing happens to many breeds, and all ages, young to seniors. This is just our little niche in the horse world.

Horses can end up in a bad situation, mostly because people don’t known another way. Or they have lost their job, or their spouse, sometimes their home, and we try and help as much as possible., Without good homes to take on a horse we have, that keeps us from helping the next case.

The horses we take from the track are pretty straightforward. They come with a lot of training obviously, and the majority of what we do is heal their injury to the best of our ability. The horses coming from local homes are a lot harder, there are a lot of things that often need to be undone., Some horses w the right situation and feeding program come around quickly, others not so much, Each case is different. Every horse though starts w a solid nutritional plan and friends. Being with horse friends mean the world.

Either way, we are looking for loving, permanent homes for these horses. Some can be ridden, some can’t, some can do a little light riding. They all need homes where they will receive the care they need.

If you are not able to adopt, you can check out our Monday volunteer program. We also offer LOTS of classes and clinics on horse care, handling, riding w kindness, liberty, positive reinforcement in training, providing enrichment to your horse, and of course kids classes and Homeshool programming.

This is all aimed at educating, and introducing people to such an amazing horse - the Ex Racehorse!

We are all volunteers and will go to the MOON and BACK for these horses., Our wish is that you will join us in some way., Track to Trail Thoroughbreds- rehab, rehoming, and rescue of ex-racehorses

Another great read. There are ways of “getting it done” but there are ways of doing it better!

Another great read. There are ways of “getting it done” but there are ways of doing it better!

I’m not a total treehugger but…

If it’s not ok to kick your dog why do people kick their horses?

I mean if you know horses, you know they feel everything just like we do much less on the tender sides of their bodies

Is it because people think that’s the only way to ask a horse to move forward? Humans can be crafty. I find it hard to believe people do t have any other way of asking rather than kick

Imagine you are at a dog park and someone kicks their dog. People would all be up in arms

A few months ago Robyn and I went to a reining /ranch horse type show. The one horse really lacked training and was very anxious in the arena. The rider was also anxious. Up in the stands was the trainer yelling. He seemed angry with the rider and w the horse too but mostly the rider.

Kick him. Kick him. Kick him HARDER. It was awful to watch and we left.

I mean seriously hitting the horse w spurs was all the rider or trainer could come up with

Why not just let the horse relax. Why not take this as a schooling moment and make the best of the situation so the horse ends on a positive note. Why not do just anything other than what was done.

We wonder why people get hurt. Why horses have behavior issues. Why horses are rehomed so frequently

There was nothing going right for this horse on this day. If the people in his life, if this is all they have to offer. The future is pretty grim.

I’ve been wracking my brain thinking what other animal do people kick? Why the kicking? There are so many options. The longer I do this the more I’m bothered by these displays. I don’t know 10 years ago would have I noticed? The more my eyes open the more it’s impossible to “unsee” these things.

What I was hoping would be a super fun day was marred by the look on that horses face. His eyes. This probably seems like an overreaction to many but I tell you it really bothered me.

Where has real horsemanship gone?

Such a great read. It’s true, the kids get it

A commenter yesterday said I should not compare dogs to horses. So today I will compare them to penguins! 🤣

There’s a bit of a revolution afoot!

I watched a really interesting webinar this morning from the Animal Behavior Management Allicance on the Human/Animal connection

Here was one story
Penguins, in a zoo, or a rehab facility need the bottoms of their feet examined on a regular basis. In the “old days” many many animals were darted, or physically restrained for even the most basic of care tasks.

So instead of the pain and stress for all involved, trainers taught the penguins to target to stand on a mirrored surface. Literally the penguin comes over, stands there and then gets some sort of treat. Compared to darting or physical restraint. I mean what an enormous difference. Cost, saftey, and of course their health!

If you asked people in the “old days”. That was the only way they knew, the system is not broken, it doesn’t need fixing. But then comes along, a whole different way of doing things that is pretty revolutionary. Imagine for a monument that is your job as a caretaker for an animals like that. What a blessing and actually kind of fun activity. Surely you would prefer that to the “old way”

For horses
So the whole “that is how it has always been done” doesn’t really hold water. I mean there has been so much progress across the board for animal welfare. So many options

People used to love circuses, then the treatment of the lions, elephants, dancing bears, that all came to the forefront. Pretty much the end of the animal part of a circus.

As people get tired of all these awful videos that go around, from the average person to now the very well known and Olympic hopeful, Charlotte DuJardin pulling out of the Paris Olympics after a video of her horribly whipping a horse, this changes the sentiment of so many. Many that just think if we can’t do it well, maybe we should not do it.

And the super interesting thing about the positive reinforment, its just easier over all. If you have a horse that has anxiety, hitting it, kicking it, hauling on his face or using a stronger bit and tying his head down might SEEM like a fix. But its really not. Sometimes those old ways need to be put to bed.

If we have not evolved, that is ok. But its really really great to do some research, seeing how others solve problems from a welfare state. We all love our horses. We all do the best we can with what we have. But sometimes ther are ways that are easier, less costly, and much safer in the long run. So its good to plant a seed and see what grows.

With all the craziness in the horse world, the rush to compete, win, achieve a goal, let’s not forget what it is that we really love about horses. But brought us to them.

HORSE CAMP FOR KIDS 7 AND UP
What a great way to squeeze in some horse time before the start of the school year!

Do this as a just because, an early birthday present, a reward for hard work completed over the summer, but this is something they will remember all of their life.

A whole week with beautiful ex racehorses. We ride, play, learn, and do some really interesting things with the horses. Kids go home tired and happy, but not exhausted. We have fans, misters and shade for important heat breaks. Small camp size means extra personal attention.

Info on the brochure. Register online and we will send a confirm. Let us know which week you would like!
