Louie is recovering after their neuter today, and maintaining a dog’s body temperature after anesthesia is crucial because the anesthetic drugs disrupt the body’s natural ability to regulate heat. Anesthesia causes vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) and suppresses the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for temperature control, making the patient prone to hypothermia.

A drop in body temperature can slow down metabolic processes, including the clearance of anesthetic agents, which prolongs recovery time. Additionally, hypothermia can reduce blood flow to vital organs, weaken the immune system, and increase the risk of post-operative complications. Keeping the dog warm helps ensure a smoother recovery, stabilizing vital functions and promoting faster healing.

Our goal is to make this difficult experience as comforting and easy as possible, and to ensure that you feel safe and heard as we help you advocate for your pet. We wanted to provide the option to sit on one of the couches with your pet for extra snuggles, or to sit on the floor with them with cushions. We provide a cart full of delicious treats, such as: chocolate goodbye kisses, various forms of cheese, and much more. There are also memorial tributes you can take, as well as information on grief, pet loss, and support groups. We have installed a doorbell system that allows you to notify our staff and doctors that you are ready without having to come back into the lobby. We understand this process is different for everyone and that everyone handles grief differently. It is extremely important to us that we do our best to customize this experience to meet you and your pets’ needs. If at any point you feel overwhelmed with any of these gestures/features, please feel free to let us know, and we will try to find a way to accommodate you. If you have any questions about our euthanasia process, aftercare, or quality of life, please contact our office whenever you are ready. Our kind and gentle staff will always be here to walk you through it all. 🐾🌈

Our Story

Dr. Al Lehman and Dr. Ryan Gorbutt

North Naples Veterinary Hospital is a small animal private practice that is well equipped to provide for all of your pet’s veterinary needs. Our doctors Al Lehman and Ryan Gorbutt have over twenty years of combined experience in general practice and emergency medicine. With their vast knowledge, respectful bedside manner, comprehensive care, and compassionate service, you and your pet will prefer us.

Our hospital offers everything from routine care and wellness exams to comprehensive health care and nutritional guidance for pets of all ages. We provide complete medical, surgical, and dental services for dogs and cats. We also offer boarding services for existing patients. For senior pets, be sure to ask about our Class IV Laser therapy for the treatment of arthritis and pain relief.

Our business hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 am until 5:30 pm. On the second Saturday of each calendar month, we are also open from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm. You can find us in the Naples Walk Shopping Center at the southeast corner of Vanderbilt Beach Road and Airport-Pulling Road in Naples, Florida. We are at the opposite end of the same building as Off the Hook Comedy Club.
