Dogster magazine and dogster. com reported that last year, Kelton Research conducted a survey and concluded that “54% of those with dogs in the family opt for 'pet parent' over 'pet owner,' and that 58% of American dog owners are comfortable calling themselves nicknames such as Mommy or Daddy when...

All of our pets are predisposed to develop periodontal disease (PD). Small breed dogs, due to a confluence of factors, have an increased risk of jaw fractures secondary to periodontal disease.

A thorough oral exam should be included during any spay/neuter procedure. Adult dogs have 42 teeth. If a tooth is “missing”, dental radiographs are necessary to determine if the tooth developed and is unerupted. A potential consequence of an unerupted tooth is the development of a dentigerous cyst. Dentigerous cysts, left unchecked, can expand to the point of causing significant collateral damage to the jaw. At the time of the spay/neuter, unerupted teeth need to be identified and extracted.

Update: While our power is back on, our internet services unfortunately are not. We are hopeful that this is very temporary. Please know that Dr Anne, Dr Ron and the team are putting their heads together to come up with a plan (if this persists more than a day or two) even home visits are an option!

You can reach the hospital by texting the hospital # 239-331-3345

To all of our wonderful clients and their amazing pets, we wanted to reach out with an update. First and foremost we hope everyone is safe and sound. Our hearts go out to those who have been impacted by this storm in ways we cannot even imagine.

This past week has certainly been a challenge both from the storm damage itself and the ensuing communication issues. As a community, Naples is strong and we will persevere.

It is our intent to reopen our doors Monday. Through the efforts of Dr Anne and US Building Group the hospital is once again pristine, power has been restored and we are now just waiting for internet service to be restored.

Sadie is a 12 year Yorkie rescue. During her recent physical exam, severe periodontal disease was observed (unfortunately, very common in these breeds). Full mouth extractions were performed and 24 hours later Sadie was already enjoying a pup cup!

All pets, but particularly our small breed dogs, need to have their mouths/teeth examined and cleaned regularly. Full mouth dental radiographs are an essential tool in identifying periodontal disease and must be part of every dental cleaning. Tooth pain is very unpleasant, but thankfully can be treated.

In the first picture the red arrow is pointing to an unerupted first premolar of the right mandible. The teal arrows highlight the developing cyst. The second picture is post operative. The premolar as well as the canine (fang) tooth were extracted in order to remove the cyst. The third picture shows the size of the defect left behind from the cyst. This could have been prevented had the "missing" premolar been extracted at the time the dog was neutered.

How many teeth do dogs have? Does it even matter? The answers: 42 and yes, it most definitely matters! It is imperative that once the adult teeth have erupted they are all acounted for. It is not uncommon for dogs to be missing one or more teeth (some breeds are affected more than others). So what if a dog is missing a tooth, who cares, right?!?! If a tooth is missing, dental radiographs are necessary to rule out an unerupted tooth. An unerupted tooth can result in the development of a dentigerous cyst. These cysts can be incredibly destructive and for this reason "missing" teeth need to be accounted for and extracted if unerupted.
