Jennifer here - Raising puppies is much more than getting cuddles and kisses, it's being constantly on guard for anything that might go wrong with babies OR mama.
Friday night my husband and I had a movie night and we stayed up until midnight watching Conclave. I went to bed but Andrew stayed up a little later. When he came to bed he told me that Sheba wasn't feeling well; she had been fine earlier but things can change unexpectedly. I got up and noticed that she seemed "off" so from 1:00-3:00 AM we were on Sheba vigil. Sheba's temperature was 104 (normal dog temp is 99.5-102.5); at 3:00 we decided that she had developed mastitis. We have been through this before and it was quite the ordeal. So.....4:00 Saturday morning found us at the emergency vet.
Long story short, in addition to normal puppy raising duties, I am now nurse to Sheba and foster mama to Sheba's 9 puppies. The pups still need to be with mama and it's good for them to nurse, but Sheba can't have 9 pups nursing at the same time. I have to rotate the pups so only 2-3 nurse at a time and I have to protect the infected area which has now ruptured, while encouraging puppies to nurse from that ni**le. It's a little challenging.
Fortunately, at 3 weeks old Sheba's pups are old enough to eat puppy food so I've started them on softened puppy kibble in goats milk. Sheba has started eating again, which is huge, because we have been trying to get her to eat for the past 2 days. The next couple days will be full of hot compresses, antibiotics, probiotics, pain meds, wound flushing, puppy feedings, puppy rotations for one-on-one time with mama, playing personal chef to get mama to eat as much as possible (she's lost weight in the last couple days), changing bandages, etc. BUT, Sheba is so much better this morning so I know she is on the mend and that makes it so much better. Sheba is eating, wagging her tail and in less pain plus I got a full night sleep!! (Andrew says that I need my sleep and he is right)
All this to say that if you don't see/hear from me in the next few days, this is why. I'll try to pop in from time to time with "pupdates" but if I don't, this is why :-)

Scenes from Sheba’s puppy pen

Sometimes life throws you lemons, sometimes it throws you SIX -13 week old pups out of nowhere! Yes, I said SIX..... 13 week old puppies... And MAN!! Let's just say it's the reason I have been so quiet recently..

You see, Christmas came...... Puppies went to their forever home... and I breathed a sigh of RELIEF.. As there were no more little paws to take care of .. But God had a different plan.... Some families travel across the ocean to answer God's calling... But He called us to serve across town and in our backyard...

The chain of events went like this..

• 9:00am • Headed to visit with my out of town sister and receive a call from a friend only to find out that there was a tragedy. My first thought was, "Well that's awful, but what does that do with me?"

• 9:05 • My heart sinks as I hear that the best way to help is to swoop in bring 6.... Yes, I said SIX... 13 week.... THIRTEEN puppies home... I will be honest, there were tears.. A feeling of but... But... They weren't raised by me.. What am I getting into, I have NO idea what I am getting into.

• 10:00 • I took a few minutes confirming with my husband and parents (Jerry and Donna) that it was ok to help

• 10:30 • I find out that the relief needs to happen NOW.. I need pens. My Dad swoops into action and I head to get the puppies.

• 11:00 • Try to get as much info as possible from the affected party but it was a slow and delicate matter.

• 12:00 • Pups in my possession, with very little info but trusting God.

• 12:30 • Puppies dropped off at my parents and headed to see my sister.

Ya'll, this.... Was.....OIE!!!!! And a delicate dance juggling the original family and potential families... Mom and I didn't do it perfectly( Infact we had a couple of missteps) but within a week we had qualified homes for 5 of the 6 pups).

Yes, I said 5... That means we are currently looking for a specific and special home for this little boy.

This little guy has really captured our heart.. He is sweet, calm and overall ADORABLE...

Meet Sheba & Spencer's Egyptian litter - I thought this was a fitting theme for a mama named Sheba :-) The girls are Cleopatra (of course), Delta, Memphis, Giza, Sahara, and Rosetta. The boys are Nile, Ramses and Cairo. The variety of color is amazing - from a buttery cream color to a sleek solid black, and almost everything in between. Hey all! If you placed a calendar order on 12/9, please contact the company for a refund. There was an error and I had to delete the first version on 12/9 and load a corrected version that evening. The updated calendar wasn't available until 12/10. I contacted the company and was told that you should contact them at 920-231-1700 to make sure the order is cancelled and refund processed. You can then order the corrected calendar.
