Heartworm Disease ❤️ Did you know that dogs can have worms in their heart? Last year we diagnosed over 60 dogs with heartworms! Heartworms develop when a dog is bitten by an infected mosquito carrying a baby worm of a parasite called Dirofilaria Immitis (shown in the video above!) over about a six month period, these baby worms mature into foot-long worms (heartworms) and causes damage to the heart, lungs, and arteries. Signs of early heartworm disease may include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite, and weight loss. As heartworm disease develops, pets may show signs of heart failure, and the appearance of a swollen belly due to fluid in the abdomen. Monthly heartworm prevention starts as low as $10 a month, and there are even annual injection options now that take away the hassle of remembering to give it monthly! On the other side, treating a heartworm positive dog involves a series of injections that are not only painful for the pet, but can be extremely costly for the owner.
