Marc Smith, DVM of Natchez Trace Veterinary Services in Nashville & Franklin TN:
If you want to know about this concept of holistic veterinary medicine and really what it means to me, let me give you an idea. In conventional medicine, typically we look at just the symptoms of the disease, and is your dog itching, or is your cat itching.
Is your cat throwing up hairballs? Then in holistic veterinary medicine, what we do is we look at a bunch of different factors that can play a role in the way your pets exhibit disease.
For instance, if you have a kitty cat that all of a sudden starts peeing all over the house, did something change in the environment? Did you bring in a new cat? Did you change the diet? Is there family situation dynamics that are changing that are impacting your kitty cat? That's kind of a holistic view of veterinary medicine and pets.
That's exactly what we do here at Natchez Trace Veterinary Services. Now, the term “holistic”, whatever, it doesn't matter. It's “are you trying to expand to get better, to deliver more to the owner, you, and to the pet?”
That's what we do. If you're interested in what we do, then give us a call at 615-750-2248.

What is Progressive Veterinary Medicine? Marc Smith, DVM

Marc Smith, DVM of Natchez Trace Veterinary Services in Nashville & Franklin TN:
If you're interested in this concept of progressive veterinary medicine and what it means, let me start off by telling you a story.
I was a young veterinarian coming out. I knew what I was doing, strutting my stuff, and I had this tumor in this horse's eye. And I'd been haggling around with it, spending all kind of money. Doing this, doing that, and nothing seemed to work. And one of my colleagues, who was an older gentleman, he said, "Marc, try some of this in this horse's eye."
Well, I didn't believe him, but I did it because I didn't really have anything else to do. And guess what? It made the tumor go away. I injected a medicine into the tumor. I took some older gentleman's knowledge and I put it to use and I injected that tumor and gone. It was gone.
And so that kind of sums up this idea of progressive veterinary medicine. And what it means is, it means taking the old knowledge and mixing it with the new. It means taking the new and mixing it with the old. The Eastern and the Western, in a variety of treatments to ultimately help your pet. But then we take it a step further through this idea of communication, constant support in your decisions about your pets. Peace of mind that you've made the right choice. And we all deliver through giving you options so that you feel empowered, in control, so that you can make the best choice for your pet.

Should You Get a Vaccine Booster or Titer Test at Your Puppy's 1-Year Follow Up Exam?

Hello ladies and gentlemen. I'm Dr. Marc Smith of Natchez Trace Veterinary Services in Franklin, Tennessee.
I want to talk to you about vaccine titers real fast, get down and dirty real quick.
This little puppy is about 16 weeks old and this little puppy is Waylan. He's been in some other videos. He's a good dog, and he's been through the general vaccination protocol for a puppy.
So a lot of you have the question of, so what do we do moving forward?
In a year from now, in my practice, we give another vaccine.
Now, those of you who are against vaccines, that's fine. You can do titers at that time, but what I've found is that a lot of the animal will be deficient of the titer at that time anyway.
So that's why we do another repeat vaccine at roughly 16 months of age.
Then from that point forward, we can do titers or three-year shots or whatever.
With titers, the main benefit is you don't vaccinate your pet in an indiscriminate way. Not too much, not too little.
It's always nice to know okay, does my dog have enough of this and if it doesn't we don't have to take the risk of giving unnecessary vaccines.
Now, vaccines overall are pretty safe as far as we know, but that doesn't mean they don't cause problems that we can't identify or that we can't document through science.
So, titers are an option for you and if you're interested in running a titer on your pet, then give us a call or look us up on the web at http://www.FranklinTNVet.com.
Thank you.

Cushing's disease, it's a big rage lately. Everything's got Cushing's. All these dogs, if he pees in the corner, he's got Cushing's. If he throws up three times and runs around a tree, he's got Cushing's. Well, that's not exactly true.
What you need to know is that there are two types of Cushing's. There's the traditional that we can diagnose on tests, and then there's what we call the atypical. That means all these dogs have signs of Cushing's, they're peeing a lot, they're drinking a lot, they're gaining weight, but the test is negative. It's called atypical Cushing's. Well, I've got just the thing you need, and I wrote a book, it's called The Dog Owner's Guide to Dog Cushing's, and it takes you through all the diagnostic steps, the presenting signs, all the treatments, pharmaceutical, herbal treatments, melatonin, lignin, everything you need to know to make the best decision for your pet regarding Cushing's disease.
If you wanna know all the little tricks and all the things I've learned over 20 years of practice, then download our free ebook, The Dog Owner's Guide to Dog Cushing's, and empower yourself to learn all of your options in helping your best friend with Cushing’s.

When is The Best Time for Puppy Shots? - Marc Smith, DVM
When Should You Vaccinate Your Puppy?

A common question about puppies is vaccinating puppies.
Real quick, generally speaking, I go on the recommended vaccine protocol of the manufacturer.
Now, a lot of people will question that because you think, "Oh, they're just trying to sell me more vaccines," but there is some method to the madness, okay? It's my belief, too, that these dogs that you vaccinate later, when they're a little bit older, they respond better to the vaccine.
The reason why is because their immune system gets more competent. The way the immune system works is that after the first shot, it's kind of a reading. It's reading the antigen you inject into the pet. The second shot really brings out the response.
It's ideal to give two shots, minimally, minimally, minimally. Some people forget, some things happen, but that's minimal.
The older you can wait, the better. Now the manufacturer's going to tell you 6, 9, 12, and 16 weeks, or something like that, and that's okay; but I've found that if you're trying to choose between vaccinating too much and doing the minimalist approach, then if you can push it back, and you can have your dog avoid other dogs at all cost until some of the vaccines are given, that it's better to wait longer and you have to give two. That's the best protocol.
If you want to learn more about how to vaccinate little doggies like this cute, little, inquisitive, curious canine, then give us a call at (615) 750-2248 or franklintnvet.com.
Thank you.
Waylon, Waylon, you got to chill out. There you go.

You have a dog with allergies. What a headache. They're licking all the time. They're scratching. You treat them with flea medicine and it just doesn't work. Most of the time these allergies are environmental allergies. They're dust mites or they're pollen or they're dust or they're whatever. I've treated them from 20 years. I know what they are and I know things that you can do to help them.
The most important thing is dog allergies are a management disease. You can go to the veterinarian and they can give a shot or they can put you on this medicine or that, and they're going to fix it for a while, but you're going to end up managing it, unfortunately, over that pet's lifetime. That's just the way it is. I'm sorry. But, I have some things that you can do at home that can give your dog that itches or has allergies or secondary infection relief.
Download our free ebook, The Pet Owner's Guide to Dog Allergies so that you can learn simple steps that you can take every day to manage the pain and frustration and the headaches that come from dog allergies. I don't know how to say it any better than that.
