25 Dogs of Christmas: Day 25 - Mutts!
According to the ASPCA nearly half of all domesticated dogs are mutts and 70-75 percent of the dogs in shelters are mixed-breed dogs. Each mutt is one-of-a-kind, with a combination of characteristics from various breeds. This individuality can make them a unique and special addition to a family. Mixed-breed dogs often exhibit what is known as "hybrid vigor" or "heterosis." This refers to the potential for mixed-breed dogs to be healthier and hardier than purebred dogs due to a wider gene pool.
Whether you choose to adopt a mutt from a shelter or rescue organization or have a mixed-breed dog as a part of your family, these dogs often make loving and wonderful companions. Embracing the diversity and uniqueness of mutts adds to the joy of having a canine friend.

25 Dogs of Christmas: Day 24 - Saint Bernards gained fame for their search and rescue abilities in the snowy mountain passes of the Alps. They were trained to locate and rescue travelers lost or trapped in the snow. Saint Bernards are one of the largest dog breeds. Males typically weigh between 140 to 180 pounds (63.5 to 81.6 kg), while females weigh slightly less. Despite their size, Saint Bernards are known for their gentle and friendly temperament. Often referred to as "gentle giants", they are known for their patience and tolerance, especially with children. It's also had its fair share of screen time in some childhood classics from Peter pan to Beethoven!

25 Dogs of Christmas: Day 23 - "Papillon" is French for "butterfly," referring to the breed's distinctive ears, which are large, fringed, and resemble the wings of a butterfly. Papillons are a small breed, generally weighing between 5 to 10 pounds (2.3 to 4.5 kg). They stand about 8 to 11 inches (20 to 28 cm) tall at the shoulder. They are considered excellent companion dogs. They enjoy being close to their owners and may develop a strong bond with them.

25 Dogs of Christmas: Day 22 - Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
This cuddly lap dog is a breed for the history lovers - Toy spaniels were the province of European nobility from at least Renaissance times. Two 17th-century British monarchs, the ill-fated King Charles I and his son Charles II, were especially devoted to a black and tan variety.
When the house of Stuart fell, it became a political liability to be associated with the dogs of King Charles (the Tudors favored the Pug), and the Cavalier breed became extremely rare. Queen Victoria brought back the breed, but the Cavalier had changed radically from its original form; the original version of the breed had all but disappeared. A wealthy American named Roswell Eldridge offered a cash prize to British breeders who could produce 'Bleinheim Spaniels of the Old World type.' The prospect of prize money drove breeders to revive the old style. These dogs were dubbed Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. (The name Cavalier is a nod to the monarchist party that supported the Stuarts during the civil war that cost Charles I his head.) Learn more about the breed at akc.org.

25 Dogs of Christmas: Day 21 - Before Disney’s Pongo and Perdita from 101 Dalmatians became household names, Dalmatians first gained popularity as carriage dogs, accompanying horse-drawn carriages. They were known for their agility, endurance, and ability to guard the carriage. While most modern day Dalmatians don't need to fill this role, these qualities are still prevalent in a well-bred dog, making this no pet for the faint of heart. These dogs are high energy, inquisitive and bright, with incredible athleticism and an acute awareness of presentation.

25 Dogs of Christmas: Day 20 - The Maltese has a long and ancient history, dating back over 2,000 years. They are believed to have originated in the Mediterranean, possibly on the island of Malta, hence their name. While no dog is truly hypoallergenic, Maltese are considered a low-shedding breed. Their fine, silky coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting and to keep it looking its best. Throughout history, Maltese dogs were favored by royalty and aristocrats. They were often depicted in art and literature, and many historical figures, including Queen Elizabeth I, were known to have had Maltese companions.

25 Dogs of Christmas: Day 19 - Rottweilers have ancient roots and are believed to be descendants of Roman drover dogs. They were originally used to herd and protect cattle as they accompanied Roman armies across the Alps.
Rottweilers were historically referred to as "Rottweil butchers' dogs" because they were used to herd cattle and pull carts laden with butchered meat to market in the German town of Rottweil. When properly trained and socialized from an early age, Rottweilers can be good family dogs. They are often good with children and can form strong bonds with their human companions.
