We strive to help pets heal and elevate the standard of veterinary care. Nashville Veterinary Specialists acts as a 24 hour care center, offering emergency services as well as a broad array of specialties including critical care, cardiology, oncology, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology, advanced surgery and rehabilitation. Nashville Veterinary Specialists operates out of two different build

ings at their Nashville Campus located at 2971 and 2975 Sidco Drive. Our 27,000 square-foot facility includes 22 exam rooms, on-site MRI, computed tomography (CT), and electrocardiograms, dedicated suites for chemotherapy and ultrasound, a special procedures room (used for endoscopy, cystoscopy, bronchoscopy, neuromuscular electrodiagnostics, etc), digital radiology, five surgical suites, an intensive care unit, an isolation ward and a canine rehabilitation room with an underwater treadmill. We provide care for your important family member when your regular veterinarian is not available. We then work to get you back in the care of your veterinarian as soon as possible. Doctors and veterinary support staff are in the hospital 24 hours a day to continually monitor and care for our patients. Care, which is instituted by the specialists during the day, is maintained at night. Treatments can be easily modified at any time to meet changing patient status. The emergency doctors have training and experience in a broad area of veterinary medicine and surgery rather than in one specific area. The NVS emergency team sees a wide variety of medical problems ranging from minor infections to life threatening trauma. Surgeons, Neurologists and Internal Medicine specialists are on call to perform emergency surgery, advanced diagnostics (i.e. ultrasound and endoscopy) or other specialized procedures.

Have you ever seen a cat with 2 different colored eyes?! πŸ‘€ It's quite rare for cats to have one green eye and one blue eye, but there is a condition called heterochromia that can result in a cat having two different colored eyes! When a cat does have this condition, it's usually because of a difference in the amount of melanin (pigment) in each eye. This is often seen in white or partially white cats with a genetic predispositions πŸ€πŸ’šπŸ©΅ We think it is BEAUTIFUL!😻

Our Internal Medicine Department is now doing SWALLOW STUDIES! πŸ‘πŸ’ͺ

A swallow study in dogs and cats, also known as a contrast radiography swallow study or fluoroscopy swallow study, is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the animal's ability to swallow food, liquids, and medications safely. It involves the use of fluoroscopy, a type of real-time X-ray, along with the administration of a contrast medium (usually a liquid or paste) to help visualize the swallowing process 🦴

The swallow study helps veterinarians diagnose swallowing difficulties or diseases that may not be apparent through a simple physical examination. It provides valuable insights into the cause of issues such as regurgitation, coughing, difficulty eating or drinking, and respiratory problems. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve the animal’s quality of life and prevent complications 🐢🐱

With the swallow study we can diagnose things like aspiration pneumonia, megaesophagus, esophageal motility disorders, obstructions, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), and pharyngeal or laryngeal dysfunction 🩺

If your dog or cat is having trouble swallowing or shows signs of choking, coughing after eating, or regurgitating food, a swallow study might be recommended to pinpoint the issue and guide the best course of treatment 🐾

Have you even wondered why we administer subcutaneous fluids (often referred to as "sub-Q fluids") to animals? πŸ’¦ These fluids are given beneath the skin (subcutaneously) because it is an easy and relatively non-invasive route for fluid administration. The fluids are slowly absorbed into the bloodstream, providing the animal with the necessary hydration and electrolytes. ⚑️

Here are the main reasons animals might receive subcutaneous fluids:

1. Dehydration
2. Support for Kidney Disease
3. Recovery from Surgery or Illness
4. Electrolyte Imbalance
5. Palliative Care
6. Absorption Efficiency

In general, giving fluids in this way is much easier than using an IV, and it can be done at home by pet owners under the guidance of a veterinarian! 🐢

More exciting news! Our surgical teams has started performing SUBs to help blocked cats! 😻

Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass (SUB) placement is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat cats with ureteral obstruction caused by stones. When a stone blocks the ureter (the tube that carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder), it can lead to severe complications, including kidney damage or failure. In cases where traditional methods like surgery or medical management are not feasible, the SUB procedure provides an alternative by creating a bypass for the urine to flow around the obstruction.

During the procedure, a catheter is placed in the kidney, with another catheter inserted into the bladder. These two are connected through a subcutaneous tunnel, allowing urine to drain from the kidney directly into the bladder, bypassing the obstructed ureter. This helps relieve pressure on the kidneys, prevent further damage, and improve the cat's overall comfort and health. The SUB is particularly useful in cases where the stones are too large, in a difficult location, or if the cat's condition makes surgery too risky.

We are so excited to start offering this procedure! To learn more about it, visit our surgical teams website at the link below! πŸ’‰
