I want to address something because it has come up a lot lately: if you have no experience hand raising baby birds and you have no one willing to mentor you CLOSELY AND IN PERSON, you do NOT need to be seeking an unweaned baby.

I get approached at least every couple of months by someone wanting to take a bird home before it is weaned. I’ve been given all kinds of reasons. There are breeders out there telling people they’ll have a more tame or more bonded bird. There are people who just don’t want to wait. There are people who want to use hand feeding to create a dependent relationship with the bird. There are people who just don’t want to pay for a weaned bird and expect to get an unweaned one for half the cost.

Hand feeding babies is an amazing experience. It’s fun and exciting to watch babies grow and develop. BUT things can go wrong, even if you do everything right. Babies can aspirate food, get infections, or even just have developmental hiccups. If you mess up temperature or thickness you can give a baby crop burn or sour crop, or just slowly starve the baby. As they start to wean, if you withdraw hand feeding too soon they’ll starve to death. And if you don’t have the experience you won’t even know there’s something wrong until it’s far too late to intervene.

And this doesn’t even include what is lost in social development in a baby that is raised by itself without learning to interact and play with other birds of its species.

Please, let breeders do our jobs. Let us raise your beautiful babies for you. And do not trust these people telling you to take a baby to hand feed if you don’t have all the experience (or support) needed, or if they’re not willing to sit with you and teach you how and supervise several feedings with you.
