Brown County Humane Society

Brown County Humane Society BCHS is a nonprofit animal shelter serving the homeless dogs and cats of Brown County, Indiana.
(284)

We also offer resources to help residents keep pets in their homes including low-cost spay/neuter. BCHS strives for a community where all animals are valued and treated with respect. All animals that come to the shelter are re-homed, regardless of how long it takes and no animals are euthanized due to lack of space or funds. We hold the Brown County Animal Control contract, but we are not a govern

ment agency and receive no funds from any national animal welfare organizations. Our community outreach program has reduced the number of animals coming into the shelter by 49% and the BCHS has been nationally recognized as a successful rural shelter with an outstanding save rate of 99%, compared to a national average of 60%.

Meet Lucky, a sweet and gentle cat with a heart full of love, just waiting to trust the right person. Lucky may be a bit cautious when meeting new people, preferring the comfort of his cozy fort as he observes the world around him. But once he builds up his confidence, he’ll start to greet you with a quiet, loving presence.

Lucky’s a cat who takes his time, and he thrives in a calm, patient environment where he can feel safe. His favorite way to show affection is with gentle head scratches, and his eyes radiate warmth and love.

He loves to nap on your lap and receive all the pets. Lucky is a truly special companion—he just needs someone who understands that with a little patience, his love will shine through. If you’re looking for a quiet, sweet soul who will reward your kindness with loyalty, Lucky might be the perfect match!

If you are interested in learning more about Lucky, stop by the shelter to meet him or submit an adoption application at the link below.

Charming and affectionate, Lou has a personality as unique as his looks! With a striking brindle coat and captivating mismatched eyes—one blue and one brown—Lou turns heads wherever he goes. But his true beauty lies in his sweet and loving nature.

Lou is the ultimate companion for anyone who enjoys a dog that loves to be loved. He’s known for enthusiastically leaning against your legs to get as close as possible, soaking up all the pets and affection you’re willing to give. His eagerness to please makes him a quick learner, especially when treats are involved. Teaching Lou new tricks is a joy, as he picks them up in no time, showing off his smarts and enthusiasm.

When it’s playtime, Lou’s favorite game is chasing tennis balls. He’ll dash after them with excitement and happily bring them back, ready for another round. This playful streak, combined with his affectionate side, makes him the perfect balance of fun and cuddles.

Lou would thrive in a home where he can be an active part of the family, whether it’s learning new things, playing fetch in the yard, or simply lounging by your side. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving, and incredibly handsome companion, Lou is ready to lean his way into your heart. Come meet this special boy and see why he’s impossible to resist!

If you are interested in learning more about Lou, stop by the shelter to meet him or submit an adoption application at the link below.

Meet Pico! This sweet, former feral kitten has come a long way since his days of living outdoors. Thanks to his foster mom, Pico now enjoys the comforts of indoor life—complete with cozy beds and blankets and, of course, delicious food! His love for tasty treats is the quickest way to win his heart, so be sure to keep the snacks coming.

Pico is still adjusting to the human world and would thrive in a quieter, more relaxed home where he can continue to gain confidence at his own pace. While he may be a little shy at first, Pico absolutely loves other cats and would be an excellent addition to a home with a resident feline friend. He’s playful, silly, and his affectionate side is slowly blossoming as he continues learning to trust.

If you're looking for a sweet kitty who will bring joy to your home (and a little extra playtime for your current cat), Pico is the one for you! Stop by the shelter to meet Pico, or complete an online adoption application and a staff member will follow up.

With a little patience and a pocket full of treats, Stella will quickly become your best friend. This clever and curious girl has a knack for learning, especially when yummy rewards are involved. Though a bit timid at first, Stella’s shyness melts away once she realizes you’re her kind of person—bonus points if you’ve got her favorite snacks on hand.

Stella is catching on quickly to basic cues, using her keen nose and determination to figure things out. She loves a good mental challenge and lights up when there’s a treat to earn. Her latest trick? Jumping through a hula hoop! Stella’s growing confidence and playful spirit make her a joy to work with and watch.

In between training sessions, Stella enjoys soaking up affection. She’ll pause her sniffing adventures to nuzzle up for pets, her gentle demeanor shining through. While she thrives in a calm, understanding environment, her playful and loving side is sure to steal your heart once she feels safe and comfortable.

This sweet and sensitive girl would do best in a home that can offer her the time and encouragement she needs to truly blossom. If you’re looking for a loyal, smart, and unique companion, Stella is ready to leap (or hula hoop!) into your life. Come meet her—you’ll be amazed at what this wonderful dog has to offer!

Today is the FINAL day to call and secure your spot for 50% off spay/neuter for your dogs and cats. One surgery can prevent dozens of unwanted pets in our community!

With less than 30 hours remaining of 2024, we are still $5,400 from our $7,000 goal to help kick of a Happy New Year for the dogs and cats currently in the shelter. Your support throughout the year has enabled over 500 pets to be adopted into loving homes and a gift today will help even more in the coming year.
https://www.bchumane.org/donate-now-appeals-sm/

Badger (formerly Figg) was a challenge—too smart for his own good and wary of strangers. A shelter favorite for his fetching skills and love of belly rubs, he barked and barked and barked at anyone new, scaring away potential adopters.

But thanks to your support, Badger had the time he needed to find someone who could see past his stranger-danger fear. After several patient meetings, he won over his perfect match. Today, he has a big yard to play in and sleeps in a warm bed with his favorite people every night.

Your support gave Badger his happily-ever-after. https://www.bchumane.org/donate-now-appeals-sm/

Now Milo is waiting for his chance. Like Badger, Milo is a clever, energetic boy who needs a family ready to channel his smarts into something special—maybe agility or flyball. With the right adopter, we know Milo will shine just like Badger.

Every donation helps pets like Badger and Milo receive the food, care, and patience they need to find their forever homes. One last gift this year will ensure happy endings for the pets still at the shelter.

If you donate by midnight on December 31, and your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $7,000, thanks to the Tompkins Foundation for FeLV Advocacy. Together, we can make 2025 a year of hope and happiness for pets like Milo. https://www.bchumane.org/donate-now-appeals-sm/

Less than 2 Days Remain to Get 50% Off! Call Today - Don't Miss Out! One call can mean the difference between caring for one pet and caring for an entire litter (or more!).

Surrendered to a veterinarian to be euthanized, Duchess (formerly Suleka) was lucky that your support saved her. This sweet senior cat faced serious health challenges, including hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, and a urinary tract infection. Yet the veterinarian felt she deserved a chance to live and asked us to help.

With the care of a loving foster family, Duchess regained her health—and her personality! Her cheerful and very loud meows greeted her foster mom daily, and once she was strong enough, she found a forever home. Her new family says she’s “a snuggly girl” who loves her second chance at life.

Your support gave Duchess the care she needed to thrive. https://www.bchumane.org/donate-now-appeals-sm/

Now Benjamin is waiting for his turn. Like Duchess, this older gentleman came to us with medical challenges and needed foster care to recover. With love and patience, he’s blossomed into a chatty, cuddly companion who even gets along with the resident dog. Benjamin is now ready for a retirement home where he can relax, soak up affection, and enjoy the life he deserves.

Every donation helps pets like Duchess and Benjamin get the care and time they need to find their forever homes. As 2024 comes to a close, can I count on you for one last gift for the deserving animals at the shelter?
https://www.bchumane.org/donate-now-appeals-sm/

Together, we can give more animals like Benjamin the gift of hope and happiness in 2025.

2024 has been a year of second chances for so many pets. Pets like Bugsy (formerly Temperance).

Found as a starving stray, Bugsy faced challenges to adoption, including her penchant for chasing small animals. Despite her struggles and because of her snuggles, she captured hearts at the shelter and found her perfect home on her third adoption attempt. She is now living a life of luxury where her favorite place is in a lap getting showered with love - all 44 pounds of her!

Your support gave Bugsy the time and care she needed to find her forever family. https://www.bchumane.org/donate-now-appeals-sm/

Now, Waylon is waiting for his turn. Like Bugsy, he’s a people-loving dog who’s been adopted and returned twice. He also shares Bugsy’s inclination to pursue small animals, creating a challenge to adoption.

One former adopter called him “very sweet, well-behaved, and full of love to give.” Waylon just needs the right family to love him as he is and give him the happy ending he deserves.

As we wrap up 2024, will you make one last gift to help deserving animals like Bugsy and Waylon? https://www.bchumane.org/donate-now-appeals-sm/

If you donate by midnight on December 31, and your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $7,000, thanks to the Tompkins Foundation for FeLV Advocacy. A gift now will kick off a Happy New Year for hundreds of pets.

We couldn't let the day pass without sharing a few more photos of the Christmas fun the dogs have had this week.

Some of them didn't quite understand the wrapping paper photoshoot so they just did their own thing and showed how adorable they are in their own way.

We hope everyone had a wonderful day full of happiness and joy!
