Brown County Humane Society

Brown County Humane Society BCHS is a nonprofit animal shelter serving the homeless dogs and cats of Brown County, Indiana.
(285)

We also offer resources to help residents keep pets in their homes including low-cost spay/neuter. BCHS strives for a community where all animals are valued and treated with respect. All animals that come to the shelter are re-homed, regardless of how long it takes and no animals are euthanized due to lack of space or funds. We hold the Brown County Animal Control contract, but we are not a govern

ment agency and receive no funds from any national animal welfare organizations. Our community outreach program has reduced the number of animals coming into the shelter by 49% and the BCHS has been nationally recognized as a successful rural shelter with an outstanding save rate of 99%, compared to a national average of 60%.

Happy 1st Birthday Truffle!

Nobody wants to spend their birthday in a shelter, but we do all that we can to make them feel special when it happens. Today one of our favorites (shhh, don't tell the others!) Truffle is celebrating his very first birthday.

Truffle is an outgoing, loving boy who has captured our hearts and is ready to share that love with a forever home.

Truffle is a sweet, playful cat with a heart full of love just waiting to be shared. Truffle loves playtime and is always up for a fun game, whether it’s chasing toys or exploring his surroundings. The only thing that beats playtime is dinner, and he isn't shy about reminding you when it's time for that. We are still convinced he has an alarm clock hiding in his room somewhere!

And, don't even get us started on his adorable little fangs that poke out every now and then! 🥰

Truffle is a happy boy who enjoys life to the fullest and is ready to shower his future family with love.

Help us shower Truffle in birthday love by sharing this post with everyone you know. You can help grant his birthday wish of a family to call his own!

If you are interested in learning more about Truffle, stop by the shelter to meet him or submit an adoption application at the link below. After the application is received, an adoption counselor can reach out to you directly.

Volunteer Need Spotlight - Community Assistance Helpers

Our Serving Pets Outreach Team (SPOT) is dedicated to helping our Brown County community provide responsible care for their pets. The mission of the SPOT program is to reduce the number of unwanted animals in the country and to keep loved pets in their homes and out of the shelter.

SPOT’s spay/neuter efforts have significantly reduced unwanted pets in the shelter over 15 years and the need continues to grow as veterinary care access declines. We are looking for volunteers to help continue this legacy of serving our Brown County residents and their pets.

Volunteers for our spay/neuter transport team will assist with pet drop-off and pick-up at the BCHS shelter (no driving required). Experience with handling “feisty” cats is preferred. Volunteers can choose morning (5:45–8 AM) or evening (5:45–8 PM) shifts or both. Transports typically occur twice a month on Thursdays, with some schedule variation. Must be 18 or older.

Help is also needed for monthly pet food distribution opportunities provided by SPOT.

If you are passionate about helping keep pets healthy and safe, this is the opportunity for you! Complete an online volunteer application and our Volunteer Coordinator will reach out with more details.

Bobo is a young, active husky with a sharp mind and a love for adventure! This smart boy thrives on learning new things and is always eager to work for treats. When we introduced him to the agility equipment, he amazed us by mastering the jump, hoop, platform, and tunnel in just five minutes—he’s a natural!

Bobo is happiest when he’s busy, and without enough activity, he might find his own (mischievous) ways to entertain himself. He enjoys a game of fetch, though he’s still working on bringing the ball all the way back. He has also joined some playgroups and loves romping with other dogs, though his high energy can be a bit much for more laid-back pups. A playful canine friend who matches his enthusiasm could be a great companion for him!

After a good workout, Bobo’s affectionate side shines through. He’ll lean against your legs for pets, roll over for belly rubs, and soak up all the love he can get. He’s sweet, playful, and full of potential—just waiting for the right person to guide him.

If you're looking for a smart, fun-loving companion who will keep you on your toes and reward you with love and loyalty, Bobo is your guy! Come meet him and see if you’re the perfect match.

If you are interested in learning more about Bobo, stop by the shelter to meet him or apply at the link below and an adoption counselor can reach out to you directly.

Virtual Volunteer Need Spotlight: Content Creators

Want to volunteer, but aren’t able to come to the shelter? We have several virtual opportunities for volunteers to help spread the word about BCHS and our adoptable pets. Here are just a few:

Article Writer
Love researching and writing about pets? Help us create articles for our blog, Pet Tails, and e-newsletters! Write 2-3 articles (300-500 words) per month on animal welfare topics—suggested or your own. Work from home, with the option to attend marketing meetings if you’d like.

Social Media Helper
If you enjoy keeping up on all the latest social media trends and think, I’d love to try that with the local shelter pets, then this is for you. Our social media helpers are those who help create content for our social media to help promote the amazing animals in our care. Even if you aren’t in a position where you can come to the shelter, you can still help!

Marketing Committee
Join our marketing committee to help promote BCHS! We spread the word through our website, social media, print, and TV. As we expand our reach in 2025, we need passionate members who love writing, social media, or sharing their love for animals. Meetings are held monthly around committee member availability and can be attended virtually.

If you'd like to learn more about any of these opportunities or other virtual marketing help, please complete an online application and our Volunteer Coordinator will reach out.

WARNING - Cute and Adorable Overload Incoming....

We might be bias, but we are pretty sure we have 2 of the CUTEST puppies ever available for adoption right now! While their fosters are enjoying all the puppy fun, we know they deserve a forever home as soon as possible so they can enjoy every minute of life with their families.

Meet Finnegan and Spud 🥰

Finnegan is full of energy, loves his toys, and is always up for playtime—whether it’s with his favorite humans or his doggy pals. He’s a social butterfly who thrives on companionship and would love a furry friend to help him grow into a strong, confident pup. This bouncing baby boy is ready to bring endless joy and puppy kisses into your life!

If you’re looking for a fun-loving, affectionate puppy who will shower you with kisses and keep you smiling every day, Finnegan is your guy! A love for puppy snuggles is a must—because this little lovebug has plenty to give.

Finnegan is a smaller guy and we estimate he will be 25-30 pounds when fully grown.

Are you ready to welcome Finnegan into your heart and home? Come meet him today!

Spud is an adorable 11-week-old puppy with a big personality and an even bigger future ahead of him! Estimated to grow into an 80-pound dog, he’s already showing signs of being a curious and energetic companion who is soaking up everything life has to offer.

This little guy is a treat-motivated learning machine—he picked up “sit” and “touch” in no time and is always eager to learn more. When he sits, he’ll c**k his head to the side as if to ask, "I'm a good boy, right?" His expressive face is full of curiosity as he looks at people, trying to figure out what to do next. He’s also a puzzle master in the making, having already conquered a couple of food puzzles with ease.

With plenty of toys, puzzles, and playtime, Spud will thrive in an environment where he’s mentally and physically engaged. If you’re ready for a fun-loving, energetic puppy who will grow into a big, goofy companion, Spud might just be the perfect match for you!

Both puppies are currently in foster homes and will require a scheduled time to meet them. Please complete an online application and his foster will follow up with more information: www.bchumane.org/adoption-application/.

Volunteer Need Spotlight - Animal Socialization

Looking for a volunteer opportunity that doesn't require a set commitment every week? We've got the one for you!

Some dogs and cats need a little extra love and personal attention, and that’s where our incredible volunteers step in! Whether it’s offering a comforting presence to a shy animal by sitting quietly by their side or engaging an energetic pup in a fun-filled play session, every moment spent with them makes a difference.

Our animal socialization program ensures that these special pets get the companionship, confidence, and care they need, helping them feel safe, happy, and ready for their forever homes! Additionally, volunteers may help to prep enrichment items that will be shared with the shelter pets.

Volunteers sign up for days based on their availability (no weekly commitment required) anytime between 10am and 5pm. A Google calendar is used for sign-ups. Volunteers spend as long as they like interacting with selected pets. To interact with dogs, individuals must be 18 or older and for cats or enrichment prep, you must be 15 or older.

If you are interested in learning more about animal socialization, please complete an online application and our Volunteer Coordinator will reach out.

Volunteer Need Spotlight - Morning Animal Care

At BCHS, we take pride in providing top-notch care for our animals and shelter! Every morning, our dedicated staff and volunteers ensure our dogs and cats have clean spaces, fresh blankets and toys, and plenty of food, water, and treats. This is super important for animals like Spruce (pictured) who like to burrow in their blankets 🥰 Keeping them safe, comfortable, and happy is our priority!

Volunteers also assist with essential tasks like dishes, laundry, and general shelter cleaning—while enjoying plenty of cuddles, tail wags, and fun along the way.

Shifts are once a week from 9 AM to Noon, open to ages 15 and over. It’s a rewarding way to bond with animals, connect with fellow volunteers, and play a vital role in helping pets find their forever homes!

If you are interested in learning more about morning animal care, please complete an online application and our Volunteer Coordinator will reach out.

When you have been in the shelter for nearly 1 year and you find out you are lucky enough to get to go hang in a foster home for a couple of weeks, you spend a few days doing nothing but enjoying the quiet and decompressing!

Waylon is enjoying his temporary and much-needed break from the shelter. But, ultimately he is hoping to find a family to call his own forever.

We might be biased, but we happen to think Waylon is pretty awesome! He is curious but not rambunctious while exploring new places. Waylon meets new people politely, enjoying pets but not overly enthusiastically. He is calm when seeing other dogs in town. Simply a perfect dog to take out on adventures or hang out at home on the couch.

After a little exercise, Waylon is ready to settle in for some lovin'. He is very sweet and affectionate with his human friends, leaning in close for pets and sharing kisses. His previous owners stated that Waylon loves car rides and is house trained.

Waylon has made several doggy friends at the shelter. He loves to chase and be chased. He has mastered a terrific spin move and does somersaults to keep his playmates guessing! Such a fun boy!

Waylon's goofy charm and zest for life make every moment with him an adventure waiting to happen. Waylon is ready to bring laughter and love into your home.

If you are interested in learning more about Waylon, apply at the link below and an adoption counselor can reach out to you directly to schedule a meet and greet.

Volunteer Need Spotlight - Dog Walkers

Our dog walkers are crucial for giving every dog daily exercise, essential for their mental and physical health. They enjoy outdoor time with dogs on our 6-acre property, which includes fenced play areas. Walkers will work one-on-one with dogs ranging from shy to exuberant dogs or join play groups to teach socialization skills.

Dog walkers also provide valuable insights about the dogs, aiding in finding them the right homes. It's a rewarding role, offering a chance to bond with the dogs and see them find happy endings.

Shifts are scheduled once a week from Noon to 5 pm, lasting at least 3 hours. Walkers should be comfortable handling dogs of various breeds, sizes and personalities, and will receive training from an experienced walker. Staff support is always available. Must be 18 or older.

If you are interested in learning more about dog walking, please complete a volunteer application and our Volunteer Coordinator will reach out.

Meet Spruce, a sweet and reserved kitty with a heart full of love – once you’ve earned her trust!

Spruce enjoys her cozy, quiet spaces and can often be found nestled under her blankets, taking peaceful naps and keeping to herself. While she may be a little shy around new faces, with patience and a calm environment, she’ll gradually warm up to you.

Once Spruce feels comfortable, she’ll happily welcome gentle pets and quiet attention, purring contentedly and even making adorable biscuits. If you're looking for a gentle, patient companion who will reward your kindness with soft purrs and sweet moments, Spruce is ready to find her forever home with you.

If you are interested in learning more about Spruce, please stop by the shelter to meet her or submit an adoption application at the link below. After the application is received, an adoption counselor can reach out to you directly.

Prince is a young, energetic boy with a heart full of love and a playful spirit that’s impossible to resist. With his soft amber eyes, he looks right at you, leaning in for pets and soaking up affection. When he’s truly enjoying the moment, those warm eyes get adorably squishy, showing just how much he loves the attention.

In the yard, Prince is pure joy in motion—chasing balls, sprinting around with excitement, and leaping like a bucking bronco. He has a special love for rope toys, but not for tug-of-war; instead, he prefers to toss them in the air and catch them all on his own. Smart and eager to please, he’s already mastered “sit” and is quick to learn more, especially when treats are involved.

Prince is looking for an active family who will embrace his playful personality and help him continue to learn and grow. Whether it’s training sessions, outdoor adventures, or simply showering him with love, he’ll thrive in a home that keeps him engaged and involved. If you're looking for a fun-loving, affectionate companion who’s always up for an adventure, Prince just might be your perfect match!

If you are interested in learning more about this Prince, stop by the shelter or submit an adoption application at the link below. After the application is received, an adoption counselor can reach out to you directly.
