It was a black kitten Saturday! Three pairs of delightful kittens found their wonderful forever homes. (Truth be told, two of the floofs had a bit of white for accents) We wish the best lives for Dixie, Samantha, Razzle, Dazzle, Hudson and Harlow with their loving families.

As times change and progress moves on I am sad to announce that our 30+ year partnership with Stray Pets in Need has ended. It has been my pleasure to work with SPIN as an Adoption Counsellor for the last eight years, finding homes for more than 1600 rescued cats and kittens through the Kitty City at Pet World Adoption Center.

A special shout out and thank you to Sue Webb, Founder and Executive Director of Stray Pets in Need for her tireless efforts towards the welfare of all animals both through SPIN and her long tenure as Animal Control Officer of Wellesley. As volunteers come and go over three decades, Sue is the one constant in the organization through good times and bad. Her dedication serves as a positive example for all of us in the field of rescue.

I wish the best for Sue and Stray Pets in Need as they embark in a new direction for the organization.

Great news!

Does the no parking lot sales section include the prepaid import of out of state animals delivered by transport directly to buyers and "adopters" without proper paperwork (OCVI), immunization or quarantine? This practice is rampant and violates many of the regulations legitimate rescues and shelters are required to follow.

Just asking.

Our Story

For more than twenty years Pet World has donated the space for the Kitty City Adoption Center to our sponsor, Stray Pets in Need. Designed with cats in mind, the facility is two multi level rooms connected by an overhead “tunnel” allowing the cats and kittens freedom of movement and choice twenty-four hours a day. Cats of most personality types thrive in the environment where they are able to eat, sleep, play and explore at will. If they enjoy the company of other cats, they can choose to socialize. If they prefer to be alone, the facility provides hammocks, beds, a cat tree and many one-cat-sized perches for some peace and quiet. As many as twenty-five cats and kittens can live happily together in Kitty City while waiting for their forever homes. As of today, 8877 cats and kittens have been placed in homes from this unique habitat.

In addition to donating the space for Kitty City, Pet World also employs the day-to-day cat caretakers and the Kitty City Manager/Adoption Specialist. Assisted by several Stray Pets in Need volunteers, the cats never lack for attention! Pet World customers and interested adopters are encouraged to visit inside the Adoption Center to play with and interact with the cats. Many cats have found new homes after being introduced, up close and personal, to that special person. We believe that there is a special bond that occurs between human and feline and that bond is harder to identify when a cat or kitten is confined to a kennel or limited to a photograph on a website. An Adoption Specialist is on hand six days a week to facilitate those special connections.

The Kitty City adoption process is pleasant and relaxed. Potential adopters are asked about their preferences, their lifestyles and living situations. We match the people to the cats based on our knowledge of the cat’s personality, age and history. Before approving an adoption we must see that the human/feline bond occurs and have no qualms about refusing an adoption if we believe it is not in the best interest of the animal. Cats are, contrary to popular belief, social creatures. Whenever possible we encourage multi-cat households and adopt kittens in pairs unless there are already other cats in the household. When we receive bonded pairs of adult cats to be placed for adoption, we make a point of adopting them together regardless of how long it takes to find them a home. We place special needs cats, senior cats and cats with quirky personalities into understanding, qualified forever homes and offer a lifelong support system for all of our adoptees.
