Cold Weather Alert!! I’ve always advised my clients to provide their horses with warm drinking water (~ 60 degrees F) during cold snaps, as it was believed that it increased the amount of water horses would drink and so decreased the odds of developing an impaction colic. However, performing this management strategy correctly and efficiently is more complicated than just offering warm water:

• Horses do indeed drink 40% more water when the water is heated BUT ONLY IF cold water is not simultaneously available
• If cold water is available, horses will drink almost exclusively from the cold water and will drink less volume

Conclusion #1: Your horse will drink more water during a cold snap if their water is heated, but ONLY if it is the only source of water available.

• Horses that are stalled and fed hay and grain will do most of their drinking within a few minutes after eating the grain and within an hour or so after they are given hay, regardless of water temperature
• All horses, whether stalled or not, do most of their drinking within 3 hours after feeding

Conclusion #2: If you are using buckets that need to be refilled, it’s important to refill them at or just after feeding twice a day.

• There is also no difference in water consumption between heated water buckets filled twice daily and water continuously available in a heated tank.

The Bottom Line: To increase water consumption and decrease the likelihood of an impaction colic, provide warm water in the winter and prevent access to cold water, and provide the warm water at or just after feeding. The average 1,200 lb horse will drink 7 - 10 gallons of water a day, so a 5 gallon bucket of water twice a day is adequate in most cases unless the horse is exercising and sweating heavily.
