Well, today is the day! April 1, 2022, marks the 21-year anniversary of starting my journey into the wonderful world of pet sitting! I have enough memories of some very interesting experiences to write a book three times over. I will save that for later.
Setting a deadline of April 1st to get everything done by today, of course, was a bit overly adventurous due to my work schedule.
But, I do have a website started and published with basic info, and the Cattitude Attitude page up.
PLEASE LIKE MY NEW PAGE!
(and reviews from my customers would be greatly appreciated!)
Thank you so much! ~Alice

Navarre Press has a paywall to be able to read this online, but! The issue containing this story will be on the stands this Thu Dec 16 if you want to catch a peek. Thank you to Wendy for the article and for being so patient with my perpetually "in-motion" goofy & overly friendly puppy Odie while trying so hard to get a photo of him! (he sure loved YOU!) Yes, folks, that is my new baby showing me his "lick-nibble-lick" technique. He ain't right, I swear! I love him. :)

After 20 years of pet-sitting in the Navarre area, Alice Coulter is changing the name and focus of her business. Instead of large birds, reptiles, cats and dogs, the owner of Emerald Coast Critter Sitter is going to focus on the first three beginning in April.

This brought tears to my eyes....happy tears.

A wildlife rehabber received an orphaned baby squirrel and then days later she was contacted by the man who had found the first baby, saying he found another in the same location — obviously a sibling of the first baby. Although already at capacity with her wildlife patients, the rehabber knew the importance of keeping siblings together, so she agreed to take the new little one. When the man arrived, the wildlife rehabber took the new baby in hand and walked to the Baby Warm incubator where the first baby was quarantined. She tells us, “I reached for the first one and when they spotted each other they held out their arms. All I did was move my hands closer and they did this…” (see photo). She goes on to say, “this photo depicts the emotion that should cause us to never separate siblings.”

This is just one of many siblings stories that we heard from wildlife rehabbers when we asked about emotions in wildlife. They told us about siblings crying for days until they were reunited, mourning when a sibling was lost, and sadly, giving up and dying after their last sibling died, even though nothing was wrong with them. We heard about one rehabber who had a successfully released squirrel return to one of her open outdoor cages when he was injured, only to have his siblings return hours later, clean their injured brother and spend the night with him in the safe enclosure, then they all left together the following day. There are endless stories like this about the bond between wildlife siblings — squirrels, raccoons, ducks, bobcats, crows, opossums, and more.

As one rehabber said, “how arrogant of us humans to think we are the only species to feel.” We can’t help but agree.

Thank you to wildlife rehabber Gayle for this photo. And thank you to the countless wildlife rehabbers who shared their stories. As we always say — if you want to know about wildlife, ask a wildlife rehabber.

20 years as of today, April 1st! No April Fool!
I have to say this job has been way more than "just a job" for me the last 20 years! I have met and cared for so many wonderful creatures, met their amazing owners and had some very interesting adventures with them over the years.
The days have been LONG but the rewards are usually :) worth it.

My Story

Emerald Coast Critter Sitter est: April 1, 2001 Navarre, FL

Welcome! Thanks for stopping in! I am Alice Coulter, a resident of this area since 1995 when I moved here from Nashville, TN. I have over 37 years of pet care experience and I established my Licensed/Bonded/Insured Professional Pet Sitting business April 1st, 2001 here in Navarre, FL.

My first foray into the wonderful world of pet sitting began like many others in this business, as a part-time “hobby” to supplement my income in 1982 in my home state of Wisconsin, then again in Nashville, TN. when I moved there in the mid 80s. I always had a full-time job but really looked forward to caring for other people’s pets “on the side”. Such a joy! I spent my formative years from birth growing up on a Dairy Farm in WI which undoubtedly influenced my true passion for all animals, large & small throughout my adult life.

Currently my best friends and the loves of my life are Vincent, my 16 year old Min Pin, Percy, my 14 year old mixed breed rescue, and sweet little Cha Cha, the friendliest Chihuahua in the world who is 11 years old. I also gave a safe haven to a now very spoiled rotten rescue bird named Simon many years ago. They are my life and forgive me completely when I arrive back home after “cheating on them” all day long smelling of everyone else’s pets.
