The newest K9 member of Pawz 4 Vets is a 2 year old Belgian Malinois, also known as maligators because of their intense drive. His shelter names was Tomorrow and he was scheduled to be euthanized at noon on May 5, 2023. I adopted him at 10:00 that morning.
Tomorrow just does not fit a hi-drive dog so I held a naming contest to rename him. The rules for the contest were simple. The name had to have 2 syllables and be a town or city in the State of Texas. In just under 8 hours I had 600 suggestions which contained over 150 different names. I thought I was well traveled in my home state but I had suggestions that I had never heard of. I had to “google them” to verify they actually existed—they did. I only had one name that did not qualify and that was Cinco (5 in Spanish). That would have been the perfect name since I rescued him from death row on Friday, May 5, which is celebrated as Cinco de Mayo. But there is not a city or town in Texas named Cinco. Outside of Houston in Fort Bend Coubty there is a planned community named Cinco Ranch, but there is not just a plain ole Cinco.
The name Reno was suggested twice as many times as the second place name Ranger, so Reno it is.
He has never had any training and really knew nothing at all. I think the volunteers at the shelter were in the process of teaching him to sit but that is it.
I have had him 5 days now and he has learned to sit, down, stay, retrieve a toy and put it in my lap. We are still working on him releasing the toy. All his commands are still works in progress.
He iS NOT aggressive to people, other dogs, or cats. Surprising since he has had no training.
I need to pair him with a veteran in the very near future because he is starting to bond to me and I want him to bond to his new handler. Hopefully I will find him a match soon.
This video is him hitting a bite pillow. No aggression, all play. He loves playing tug.
