🌸🦆 A Heartwarming Mother's Day Story at J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue 🦆🌸Every year, our sanctuary at J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue HQ welcomes Mama Duck, our cherished mallard, who chooses our flower garden as her nesting ground. Yesterday, we were overjoyed to witness the hatching of her eggs, filling our sanctuary with the sweet chirps of new life.However, today brought a moment of urgency as I heard Mama Duck's distressed calls for help during our routine yard work. To our dismay, her precious ducklings had accidentally fallen into a nearby storm drain, beyond her gentle reach.In a beautiful display of community spirit, our neighbors swiftly rallied to our aid. Together, we lifted the sewer grate and, with careful hands, rescued the stranded ducklings, reuniting them with their relieved mother.This heartwarming rescue serves as a poignant reminder of the power of compassion and unity. On this special Mother's Day, we celebrate Mama Duck's resilience and the unwavering support of our incredible community. Miniature Marvels: Despite their diminutive size, Painted Mantellas possess big personalities. They're known for their energetic behavior and agile movements, hopping about their forest floor homes with grace and agility.
Community Builders: These social amphibians often form tight-knit communities in their native Madagascar, where they engage in intricate social behaviors such as territorial displays and courtship rituals.
But why dedicate a whole week to amphibians, you might ask? 🤔 Well, these enchanting creatures are not only beautiful but also essential components of their ecosystems. Here at J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue, we’re thrilled to celebrate a full week dedicated to appreciating and understanding these incredible creatures that grace our world with their presence. 🌍💚 Let’s take this opportunity to not only celebrate but also educate ourselves and others about the importance of turtles and tortoises in maintaining healthy ecosystems. 🌿
And what better way to kick off this week than by featuring one of our amazing adoptable tortoises? 🐢✨ Say hello to Tokka, the Sulcata Tortoise! 🐢👋 Tokka joined our rescue family on 10-28-23 during our Exotic Pet Surrender Event in Milwaukee. Sadly, Tokka’s previous owner couldn’t keep up due to other commitments, but now Tokka is ready to find a forever home filled with love and care! 💕
Tokka may be about 13 inches long, but don’t let that fool you—this tortoise has a big personality and an even bigger appetite for pumpkins! 🎃😋 Here are some fascinating facts about Sulcata tortoises like Tokka:
🐢 Size: Sulcata tortoises are the third largest species of tortoise, with adults averaging 18 inches in shell length and 70–100 pounds in weight. Some can grow to be two to three feet long and weigh over 150 pounds!
🐢 Furrows: The name “sulcata” comes from the Latin word sulcus, which means “furrow”. This refers to the furrows, or deep lines, on their shells—such unique markings!
🐢 Survival skills: Sulcata tortoises are tough survivalists that can go weeks without food or water. When they do find it, they can drink up to 15% of their body weight—talk about impressive!
🐢 Burrows: Sulcata tortoises dig burrows in the ground where they take shelter from their harsh, hot, arid habitat. These burrows can be up to 10 feet deep—quite the impressive digging skills!
🐢 Movement: Sulcata tortoises move mostly at night, traveling 2–3 miles in search of food and water. A nocturnal
