This is a great reminder that releasing pet fish into the wild is never a good idea! Goldfish may seem harmless, but they can quickly become invasive, outcompeting native species and disrupting ecosystems. If you can no longer care for your fish, consider rehoming or surrendering them to a rescue like J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue instead of releasing them into local waterways!

🐍🐠🐸 Exotic Pet Surrender Event Recap! 🦎🦜🐢

Our first Exotic Pet Surrender Event of 2025 at 1000 Islands Environmental Center was a success! A total of 14 animals found their way into our care, including clownfish, lizards, snakes, and even an axolotl. The most common reason for surrender? Owners could no longer provide the care their pets needed.

All surrendered animals will be quarantined and observed before being placed up for adoption.

This is exactly why these events exist—to provide a safe, responsible alternative to releasing exotic pets into the wild. We’re grateful to everyone who chose to surrender their animals responsibly and to our amazing partners who make these events possible: 1000 Islands Environmental Center, Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance, Winnebago Waterways, and University of Wisconsin Sea Grant/Water Resources Institutes.

We're thrilled to kick off March with our beloved duo, John and Jake from Statefarm, taking center stage for . These magnificent creatures never fail to captivate us with their beauty and charm.

But amidst the joy of sharing our scaly friends, we're also facing challenges. Animal rights groups are trying to silence our voices, claiming that sharing images of reptiles online promotes abuse and normalizes captivity. This couldn't be further from the truth!

Responsible Reptile Keeping stands firm against such baseless accusations. We too believe in educating, advocating, and celebrating the love and care we provide to our cold-blooded companions.

🐱 National Invasive Species Awareness Week: Feral Cats – The Worst Invasive Species in Trade 🐱❌

Unlike other invasive species we’ve covered, feral cats are currently unregulated at the state level—but their impact on wildlife, property, and public health is devastating.

🚨 Why are feral cats a problem?
🔹 Decimate native wildlife – Killing billions of birds, small mammals, and reptiles every year
🔹 Damage property – Spraying, digging, and spreading disease
🔹 Pose health risks – Carrying parasites and diseases like toxoplasmosis that can affect humans and other animals

💡 How can you help?
✅ Keep outdoor cats contained – Use a catio or secure outdoor enclosure
✅ Never allow any animal to roam unsupervised
✅ Do not feed or shelter feral cats – This increases their population and worsens the problem
✅ Support responsible pet ownership – Spay/neuter and keep cats indoors
