The prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain involved in decision-making, is not fully developed during adolescence. This can look like a dog barking and lunging at something, becoming easily and frequently distracted, a lack of inhibition, and/or not listening to verbal cues as well as they once did.

If you’re feeling frustrated with your adolescent dog, take a breath and try to remember this is temporary. 😮‍💨

Shake it…shake it off…

A recent study by two researchers in France looked at sniffing, pulse rate, and leash length on walks. Sixty-one dogs were taken on three separate walks, five minutes each walk, once with a 1.5m leash, once with a 5m leash, and once without a leash at all (walk order was randomized for each dog). Off-leash dogs sniffed the most, more than 3x as long as the dogs on short leashes. Dogs on long leashes spent nearly as much time as unleashed dogs sniffing, almost 3x as long as dogs on short leashes.

This study also found that sniffing resulted in lowered pulse rates, and the more intensely they sniffed, the more their pulse rates lowered. Pulse rate was also lowered when dogs “shook off” during walks on all leash lengths. The “shake off” behavior was often seen when the dog’s pulse rate was particularly high.

Alright friends, Ariel’s done with this place. Today she outright put on the brakes when it was time to go back in her kennel.

She was adopted for a few weeks but she didn’t like to share her treasures (treats, toys, sticks) with the other dogs in the home and the adopters did the right thing and returned her.

She’s back at OAHS but isn’t happy about it. She’s an absolute dream in the home with the humans. She walks amazing on a leash and loves to play. She’s also affectionate and snuggly. She is a staff and volunteer favorite and we know she’ll be your favorite too!

Please consider fostering or adopting this lovely lady. She loves all humans and could probably still be friends with dogs outside of the home (away from her personal treasures). Ariel is 2 years old and weighs 43 pounds.

May we raise children to love the unloved things...
The dandelion, the worm and the spiderlings
Children who sense the rose needs the thorn
and run into rainswept days the same way we turn toward the sun

And when they're grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice
May they draw upon that wilder bond...
Those days of tending tender things
AND BE THE ONES

Tito is waiting for his "person" to come and adopt him. If you think Tito might be the dog you're meant to share your life with, check him out at oahs.org.

"Tito and I recently spent two days at my family’s summer cottage. I walked him once a day at the nearby nature preserve. At the cottage I cooked meals, did housework, read a book, watched TV—normal at-home stuff.
Tito is house trained. He stood at the door when he needed to go out and went potty right away when I took him out.
Tito knows Sit, Down, Wait, Come (even from a distance), Off, Gentle (take something gently). He sometimes walks on-leash without pulling (with a front-attaching harness) but if he is excited, he pulls. He knows Leave It but needs to work on it more—especially with sticks he finds on the ground outside.
I gave Tito long walks (an hour the first day and 30 minutes the second day). Also morning, evening and bedtime short walks to go potty. We played fetch with his tennis ball in the living room. He pestered me to throw the ball for him until I put it away. (I put it in the freezer so he couldn’t smell it.) Then he played with his other toys. He settled down nicely in the cottage and napped next to me on the couch.
He liked his dog bed and seemed to know his toys from things he shouldn’t chew. When he picked up my fuzzy slipper, I told him “no” and he dropped it and left it alone after that. Same with counter surfing. He put his paws on the counter while I was making lunch. I told him “no” and he stopped doing it. Note: I didn’t leave food on the counter unattended. I didn’t want to set him up to fail.
Tito was eager to be near me. He followed me around and “helped” with whatever I was doing. He thought it was great fun to jump on the sheets/blankets while I was trying to make the bed up. At mealtimes he sat next to the table and looked wishful. Tito was afraid of the vacuum cleaner (barked and ran away).
I left Tito alone in the cottage for a short time (maybe 10 minutes). He seemed fine with it.
At night he slept on the bed with me. He was a bit restless because the cottage heater is noisy and it woke him several times during the night.
In general, I think he is a sweet dog who learns quickly and is fun to have around. I believe he is eager to form a bond with someone."
