The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch in effect from 4:00 AM, Monday, January 20, 2025, until 12:00 PM, Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

* WHAT...Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 15 below possible.

* WHERE...Portions of southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia, and central, northeast, northern, southeast, and southern West Virginia.

* WHEN... 4:00 AM, Monday, January 20, 2025, until 12:00 PM, Wednesday, January 22, 2025. The coldest period is most likely Monday morning.

* IMPACTS...The cold wind chills as low as 15 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS - Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.

To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly.

Keep pets indoors as much as possible.

Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.

Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.

Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.

DOG LICENSE DUE JANUARY 31ST, 2025

Every dog in the state of Ohio must have a valid dog license.

The dog that "never goes outside", emotional support dog, hunting dog, breeding dog, every dog.

The best way to help your local county dog shelter is by purchasing your yearly dog license. This money supports your local dog shelter it keeps the shelter running for day to day tasks. It goes into our dog/kennel fund. It keeps strays off the streets and reunites owners quickly with their lost pets. If a dog comes into our care wearing a current county dog license we are able to hold the dog for 14 days verse the 3 day hold.

You can purchase your 2025 dog license at the Athens County Auditors Office or online at https://www.doglicenses.us/OH/Athens/cs.php? or at the Athens County Dog Shelter our hours are

Monday- 10:00am-5:00pm
Tuesday- 10:00am-5:00pm
Wednesday- 10:00am-3:00pm
Thursday- 10:00am-5:00pm

Saturday- 10:00am-3:00pm
Sunday- CLOSED

The Nelsonville Dog Park Board will hold a meeting on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 6:00PM, at City Hall. The meeting is being held to discuss,

• Grants and fundraising
• Current status of dog park site
• Local partnerships
• Dog park design
• Dog park rules
• 2024 Dog Swim

Citizens comments may be made in person or Emailed to [email protected] by 1PM, Thursday, January 16, 2025. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
