I have a single hen rescued from a bad situation. She needs a home with other hens, and a coop that's actually predator and weather safe! So disappointed seeing so many coops in Wisconsin designed totally inadequately for below zero temps.
Let me know if you know of anyone that will give her a good home. This girl has been without any flock mates in a tiny hutch for who knows how long.

Cloudy day, but forced out to play.
Has anyone noticed how much more homebody-ish roosters are if they don't have hens to follow around? Seriously, I have to basically force them to go do something other than stand around inside.

We said goodbye to Cesar this morning. He slept in bed with us last night. I woke up often to make sure he was comfortable. In his last days, it was all I could do.
Anyone who has ever tried to help a sick chicken without a diagnosis knows that it can feel futile. There is not much info out there, even when it comes to veterinarians and other experts. The vast majority of chickens out there don't live longer than a year, by design. Why waste money finding answers for a handful of people who choose to see them as the individuals they are?
We had a good four years with Cesar, but he could have been a lot older. He had a unique personality and voice. At 11 AM, he left peacefully and without complications or trauma. At least we could give him that.

Scored this lightly used coop on marketplace for $45! Now Noodle gets his own home. He's been stuck inside for a while because we're struggling to find a good match for him.

We're always in the market for cheap or free coops in decent shape. We're capable of doing some minor repairs. The more coops we have, the more roosters we can help.

Noodle is looking for a home with a flock of hens.
He's a couple years old, likely a silkie mix, and he's got a crossbeak, but he's able to self feed with slight accommodations. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body when it comes to humans, but he's got a Napoleon complex with other roosters. We have not been able to successfully pair him with anyone here for a while now. He needs more out of life!

I think he would do really well with hens because he has confused a couple of our banty boys for hens, and he's quite the gentleman with them, lol. Except they don't want to mate with him and get upset.

This video was taken last summer after his beak broke (crossbeaks are more prone to breakage) and he was too sore to eat on his own. We had to hand feed him for a few weeks.

Located in Neshkoro. PM if you're interested!

Cesar is the barn supervisor. A very important role indeed.

I love watching them eat grass. They make it look so fun! Maybe I'll try some too 🤔

Spencer-
Spencer was dumped with his "brother" Rossi, in or around Charlotte NC in March of 2023. I work for Carolina Waterfowl Rescue's hotline service, and assisted with the call in which they were reported. My friend Dillya caught both at the same time, in what I've been told was a pretty impressive maneuver. Fast forward to May, I was visiting the rescue and I was shocked to see these two still there! They were taking up a whole coop together, and I had intended to bring home an animal (or animals) that would make the most space for new animals coming in. So, Spence and Rossi came home with me and handled a 15 hour drive like little champions.

Unfortunately the two of them are unable to live together currently, because Rossi is so obsessed with Spencer he doesn't even take the time to feed himself. Spencer is honestly kind of mean to him, despite being really bonded together. We're just trying to separate them and see if they both thrive more with some time. They're affectionately known as the "chicken nuggets" due to their tiny size.

FAQ Post

Q. Are you a registered non-profit?
A. At this time, no. It may happen in the future. Currently in-kind donations are better for us than monetary donations. Donations are not tax deductible.

Q. Will you take my rooster?
A. Unfortunately probably not. We work with close connections to take in the most needy of roosters from extremely urgent, life or death situations. If we took every accidental rooster from backyard flocks, we'd be full in one season, leaving no room for the especially urgent cases.

Q. What donations do you accept?
A.
- Coops in reasonable condition.
- All flock feed (pelleted preferred)
- Pet bowls, poultry feeders and waterers, heated bowls
- chain link panels
- scratch grains
- hoop houses

Q. Do you do adoptions?
A. We've gone back and forth about this and ultimately decided that if we want to help as many roos as possible, we need to be open to adoption. With that said, anyone interested in adopting should be willing to maintain an ongoing relationship with us. Please PM for more info.

It's finally warm enough to move the ladies to their summer home. This coop is located far away from the main barn, where all the roosters stay (and the ladies too, in the winter). It's mounted on a trailer so we can easily move it when needed. The trailer also provides a good space to hide where they feel safe.
Special thanks to Microsanctuary Resource Center for providing funding for our mobile coop, which makes helping more roosters possible.

Roosters get along better with no hens to argue over. Even if they can't touch them, seeing them is enough to spark fights. Not saying no hens = no fights, but it certainly helps keep tensions lower.

We got to declare a "win" today because Rossi and newbie Uno are getting along completely! It's a win for both since Uno needed a friend, and Rossi was getting picked on by his old flockmates.
Knock on wood 😅
