The Nevada County Sheriff’s HEART, (Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team), officially launched on January 1, 2023. It is a nonprofit animal rescue team that is activated by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office during emergencies and evacuations to assist with animal rescue. During most emergencies, the Nevada County Veterinary Disaster Response Team (NCVDRT) will also be activated by the Nevada Count

y Sheriff’s Office and they will continue to provide all of the necessary care and shelter for the animals until they are reunited with their owners. Both teams, HEART and NCVDRT, are staffed by caring, compassionate volunteers with a vast array and decades of experience in all aspects of animal rescue, transportation, and care. These two teams will work closely together, ensuring your animals receive the best care possible during these stressful events.

Today the good news just keeps coming!

First the online store is open again for another week. Don’t delay! Product turn around is not too long (to answer the question in the previous post) . You’ll be sporting your new teamwear soon!

And the LATR tryouts were a great success. There is an old adage that basically says “Train like you play”. While the business of animal rescue is never “play” at all, the phrase’s meaning is appropriate and the weather conditions today did not disappoint. We perform rescues in all kinds of adverse conditions and extreme weather. Today we saw heavy rain, bitter cold temperatures and wet equipment and personnel. Yep, reality! We are fortunate to have had 6 very dedicated H.E.A.R.T. members come try out for the LATR response team. I am pleased to announce they all passed this phase of LATR team training and are now cleared to move on to the technical classes.

Your Board of Directors and management would like to extend our very sincere congratulations to the new LATR members as well as the existing team members that showed up in terrible weather conditions to facilitate todays valuable testing. You are all to be congratulated and are so very much appreciated.

I am reaching out as the LATR tryouts are fast approaching (March 2) and we have had lots of interest in folks joining the team. PLEASE REMEMBER: If you cannot commit to coming to the Certification Training the weekend of May 30-June 1, there is no point in trying out this year as that Certification is MANDATORY to be part of this team.
If you are interested in joining the LATR team, please reply to this message and I will add you to the tryout list. Please arrive promptly at 9am, in appropriate clothing/boots/shoes to perform the physical tasks.
CURRENT TEAM MEMBERS: We will need assistance in the form of time keeping and working at each testing station. If you can come and assist in these stations, please respond to this email.
Though re-testing is not required annually some of us will be performing the test again with the mindset of maintaining our physical ability in this role. Active team members are also encouraged to participate.

RSVP to Katie Adams at NCSO Animal Control ASAP please

Drivers, start your engines….but wait a second….In the spirit of opening day for NASCAR, here are a couple quick safety tips for you trailer teams! You most likely do not have a PIT crew, so it is up to you to perform all tasks. Always remember your safety is Number 1 with the animals a very close second (if not tied for Number 1). Animal rescue is not a race, but a very delicate operation moving other people’s precious, valuable cargo in their time of need.
Livestock trailers play a vital role in the safe transportation of animals. Whether you are hauling a single horse to the trailhead, moooving (sorry, had too!) multiple cows to a stock show, or rescuing different types of animals, you must pay careful attention to what you are doing to ensure your safety, the animals’ safety, and the safety of others on the road.
Before You Load Your Livestock Trailer
Before leaving on a journey, no matter how short or long the trip will be, take the time to prepare for the drive. The following are all pre-trip safety tips:
Double-Check Your Vehicle’s Towing Capacity
It is imperative that you only tow a livestock trailer with a vehicle capable of handling the load. Remember, you need to calculate both the weight of the trailer and the weight of your animals, as well as any other cargo you plan to bring along. Compare this against your vehicle’s Gross Combined Vehicle Weight (GCVW) towing capacity. When you tow a livestock trailer with a vehicle that was not designed for your trailer’s total weight, you run the risk of damaging your vehicle. Not only that, but even if a vehicle feels capable of towing a trailer, you must consider its braking capacity.
Inspect the Trailer Floor
Over time, trailer floors can weaken. Wood floors are particularly prone to rotting (We have seen a few and have removed them from service at the annual truck/trailer inspection day). Make sure that you walk through the entire trailer while inspecting the floor. If you notice a weak spot, schedule repairs before your trip.
Look Over All Connections
All electrical connections must be functioning. Brake lights and blinkers should be fully operational to ensure that other vehicles on the road can follow you safely. Don’t forget your hazard lights. Make sure that the hitch is properly connected and that emergency chains are also in place.
Test Latches
When you are in transit, make sure your animals are secure and that all door and gate latches shut firmly.
Check Your Tires
This step is essential if your trailer sits idle for most of the year. Use a tire pressure gauge to test the pressure on all trailer tires, as well as the tires of your tow vehicle. Make sure every tire is adjusted based on the manufacturer’s suggested pressure. Additionally, look for any signs of worn tread or cracking in the walls of your tires. Never tow a trailer with signs of dry rot in the tires.
Secure Loose Items
Anything you plan to bring along on your journey should be secured in place. Make sure that no loose cargo is at risk of moving around in transit.
On the Road with Your Animals
Now that your animals are loaded, it is time to hit the open road. Use these safety tips while towing your animals:
Leave Ample Space
When pulling a livestock trailer, the amount of time it will take you to fully stop your vehicle and trailer is more than usual. Make sure to leave ample space between you and any vehicle in front of you. This will prevent you from slamming on your brakes, which can put your animals at risk.
Obey Speed Limits
Take your trip slowly. Always obey posted speed limit signs. In some cases, you might need to drive under the speed limit to be safe. In this case, use slow lanes when available.
Stop for Breaks
Both you and your animals will benefit from short breaks. Stretch your legs, water your animals, and double-check connections.
Watch the Weather
High winds, torrential rain, snow, and ice can all be extremely hazardous when towing a trailer. Make sure to check the weather forecast before you leave and pull off the road if necessary.
At the End of Your Trip
After you are finished with your trip and have unloaded your animals:
Clean the FloorsTo help prevent rot or damage to your trailer’s flooring, make sure you sweep and clear out any trash or debris.

Congratulations to all of the Nevada County employees who received their service awards. Your dedication to Nevada County is certainly appreciated by all.
Of special interest to the H.E.A.R.T team would be the 15 year service award to our H.E.A.R.T team founder and leader, Animal Control Officer Supervisor Stefanie Geckler. Congratulations Stefanie!
I know you won’t blow your own horn, but the H.E.A.R.T. team members and Nevada County certainly appreciate the dedication and devotion you have put in in the name of animal care and welfare. Thank you!
