I've seen some huge changes in the horses here from when they first move in to several months later they become entirely different creatures. They become relaxed and soft and much better able to learn and deal with life. Good management and pasture turnout really can be life changing for horses.

Imagine the glass on the left is a horse on stall rest for an injury. You take the horse for their 10 minute hand walk and a bird flies up from the ground nearby. The horse explodes from being startled. You might be left wondering “can I be anywhere else right now??”. It’s a stressful and scary state for the horse to be in.

That horse’s glass was already so full that a bird flying by was enough to add a little more water to the glass…and it quickly overflows.

Now imagine the glass on the right is a horse living outside with other horses and forage to graze on. The horses expend their energy all day, they are mentally stimulated, and they are exposed to the world around them. They are much less likely to be on edge and living in a state of stress. Their glass is much farther away from overflowing.

Even small management changes can help to empty your horse’s glass and make training and time together much more enjoyable and successful.

If you’re afraid of your horse, if your horse is high strung, spooky, or always on edge, think about the water glass and how close they might be to their threshold.
