The best way to feel confident is to have a good connection to your horse through a stable and connected seat

“Afraid for no reason”
Doubtful.
So often a student tells me they lost their nerves, and they don’t know why, because they didn’t have any big crash or fall or injury that warrants their new fear.

But let me tell you a little secret that’s not a secret at all - 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐭!!!!!

- So often these riders had a decent seat as a young person, but as they age, something falls apart. Often they took a few years off to have babies, they no longer have core muscle, and often have anterior pelvic tilt, and no longer have the security they had as a teenager
- Maybe they swapped from Huntseat to Dressage , but never actually learned a proper dresssage seat, so they are trying to find security through a low deep heel and tight calf, but are unable to do so with the longer stirup. They never learned the secure Dressage seat of a tight core and engaged, glutes and plugged in seat bones, so they never really learned the new seat, but are no longer in a position to rely on their old seat. So now they have no security at all.
- Sometimes slow habits just crept in and as they got less fit, those habits got worse and the receipt is sketchy and their subconscious knows it
- Sometimes their former horses were such auto pilot lesson horses that they felt safe but now they are on a horse that is either sharper or more athletic or maybe Greener- but either way, it’s something that requires more skilled and they possess.

And all of these scenarios this rider probably should be a little fearful!!!! Their seat and skill are not good enough to keep them safe in the situation. They are in and their subconscious mind knows it, and pushes the scaredy-cat button!!!!

That is actually a damn good reason to be fearful!!! And the good news is, we can often change it in a few lessons.
Having a fabulous seat is a lifelong endeavor, but having a seat thats secure enough to ride a decently well, broke horse in an arena, doesn’t actually take that long if your instructor is truly knowledgeable.

Riders with fantastic and secure seats are pretty courageous!! They know they can handle a spook, or a trip, or a fractious Young Horse. The unknown isn’t that scary when you’re pretty sure you can handle it.
