Tuesday Training Tip: Place or duration Stay

Dogs thrive on motion—it’s their natural state. However, stillness is a skill that needs to be taught and nurtured. Most pet owners don’t realize the profound impact that teaching their dogs to be calm and relaxed on command can have on their pets' behavior and overall well-being.

Many assume that a dog’s high energy and constant motion are just part of their nature and shouldn’t be altered. But letting a dog engage in unrestrained, high-energy activities all the time isn’t necessarily healthy. Just like people, dogs need balance.

In our training program, alongside teaching on and off-leash obedience, manners, and addressing problem behaviors, we emphasize cultivating stillness, calmness, and an off-switch on demand. This approach not only helps dogs cohabitate peacefully with their owners but also often resolves a range of problem behaviors such as anxiety, obsessive actions, and destruction.

Moreover, the mental and physical benefits for dogs who learn to calm down and switch off are significant. Dogs, like humans, can suffer from the negative effects of constant adrenaline and motion. Helping your dog step off the chaos train can lead to a happier, healthier life for both of you.

To improve your dog’s quality of life, integrate simple, non-negotiable duration down-stays or place commands into their daily routine. Include some intermittent crate time for deep rest. These small adjustments can yield significant benefits, transforming your dog's behavior and overall well-being. Try it and see the positive changes for yourself!

Recognizing signs of heat stroke in dogs is crucial for their safety. Heat stroke occurs when a dog’s body temperature exceeds 103°F (39.4°C), and their cooling mechanisms fail. Key signs include:

1. **Excessive Panting**: Continuous heavy panting even at rest.
2. **Drooling**: Increased drooling due to panting.
3. **Red or Pale Gums**: Bright red or pale/grayish gums.
4. **Rapid Heart Rate**: Feel the heartbeat on the inside of the hind leg.
5. **Weakness or Lethargy**: Weakness, unsteadiness, or collapse.
6. **Vomiting or Diarrhea**: Indicators of severe distress.
7. **Confusion or Disorientation**: Appearing dazed or unresponsive.
8. **Seizures or Tremors**: Extreme overheating can cause seizures.
9. **Glassy Eyes**: A distant, unfocused look.
10. **Collapse or Unconsciousness**: Critical emergency requiring immediate action.

# # # Immediate Actions:

- **Move to a Cooler Area**: Get the dog to shade or an air-conditioned place.
- **Provide Water**: Offer small amounts of cool (not cold) water.
- **Cool the Dog**: Use cool, damp cloths on the neck, armpits, and between hind legs. Avoid ice-cold water.
- **Monitor Temperature**: Use a re**al thermometer; stop cooling at 103°F (39.4°C).
- **Seek Veterinary Care**: Even if the dog seems better, get vet help to check for internal damage.

Prevent heat stroke by providing fresh water, avoiding strenuous activity in hot weather, and never leaving dogs in parked cars. Awareness and quick action can save your dog's life.

Tuesday Training Tip: Babies & Dogs
From our friends at

Let’s talk about babies and dogs because you can NEVER be too prepared when cohabitating with the two.

If you’re expecting to bring home a baby and have a dog at home, here are 5 simple lifestyle changes you can be making in order to be the most prepared.

1. Set boundaries immediately. Even before the baby comes home. Keep the dog out of the nursery, away from the high chair and tummy time mat. Instill some rules and structure and practice for a few months prior to the homecoming. It’ll save you a lot of stress in the long run.

2. Polish up your obedience training. Make sure your dog can hold commands around high distractions and understands there are consequences for non-compliance. Give your words meaning!

3. Desensitize your dog to baby noises and objects. Okay baby sounds on YouTube, get a fake baby doll to put in the swing, practice everything and give you dog exposure to babies and kids whenever possible.

4. When baby does come home, focus on existence and NEVER force interactions. There’s nothing wrong with your dog just hanging out in place or even in it’s kennel for a bit while your baby is in the room. This allows the dog to be around the baby without directly interacting.

5. Make training fit your lifestyle. You can work on your dog while you live your life. It’s ok to have your dog chill on place while you feed the baby, you can kennel up your dog while you shower and get things done. You can take the dog on a walk with you and the stroller. Training doesn’t mean drills all day long. It should eventually integrate with your schedule and feel natural.

**Boost Your Dog's Confidence: Essential Tips 👇**

1. **Introduce New Experiences:** Don't avoid triggers. Limited exposure can worsen anxiety. Gradually introduce your dog to various environments and stimuli.

2. **Lead with Clarity:** Establish yourself as the leader by enforcing consistent rules and setting clear expectations. Avoid mixed messages; every interaction, no matter how small, counts.

3. **Integrate Training into Daily Life:** Training isn't just a scheduled activity—it's a continuous process. Engage in everyday activities with your dog, like visiting cafes or meeting friends, and practice commands during your routine walks. Embrace life together!

Took a bit to get it off the ground, but here it is! The top 5 breed types/mixes that fill our shelters now have POMH vouchers for $100 off spay/neuter! This is available to residents of Washington, Scott, and Orange counties in Indiana because they don’t have a voucher program (if you live in Floyd, Clark, Harrison, Crawford, you can contact your shelter/humane society for info on their voucher program.) It is income based and breed specific because it’s awful watching shelters begging for help of these main breeds - these dogs just sit waiting (or are euthanized.) If adopters aren’t willing, maybe we can stop the puppy machines at the source.

Here is the online form if anyone wants to apply: https://form.jotform.com/241474337805156

Share with anyone in those counties!

Tuesday Training Tip - correct the look

Some dogs can casually observe their surroundings without getting too excited. They might show mild interest for a moment, then quickly move on to something else.

However, other dogs get overly stimulated by specific sights. Once they fixate on something, they can't look away, and their excitement quickly escalates into a reactive outburst.

For the first type of dog, a brief glance is harmless. But for the second type, even a momentary look can trigger a rapid escalation from calm to reactive, causing chaos.

Many dog owners struggle not because they can't recognize these patterns, but because they feel guilty and want their dogs to be "happy." They gamble, hoping that this time, the reaction will be different. But if a dog reacts badly even a few times out of ten, it's a sign they can't handle certain stimuli without reinforcing negative behavior.

In trying to avoid guilt and make their dogs happy, well-meaning owners often end up training their dogs to be more reactive. Just a couple of bad reactions per walk can reinforce this behavior.

What should you do? First, understand your dog's type. Are they a "window shopper" who can look at anything without issue? A "specific shopper" who reacts to certain things? Or a "shop ‘til you drop" type who finds almost everything overly stimulating?

Once you know your dog's triggers, you can take steps to manage their behavior and reduce reactivity. Start by preventing your dog from looking at the things that set them off. With the right tools and training, you can turn chaos into calm. But even the best strategies won't work if you let your dog fixate on things they shouldn't.
