We have fielded a lot of questions about the Nov 5th, 2024 implementation of the RFID tag mandate for cattle. All of these links are located on the Ag and Markets website at: https://agriculture.ny.gov/animals/cattle-bison-other-bovidae

FAQ Document t regarding the RFID tag mandate that went into effect on Nov 5th
https://agriculture.ny.gov/system/files/documents/2024/10/noticefornyscattleproducers_questionsandanswers.pdf

Updated order form for producers.https://agriculture.ny.gov/system/files/documents/2024/10/ai-489_order_form_producer_ear_tags.pdf

Record sheet for RFID Tags. There is a requirement to record the placement of RFID tags and maintain those records for 5 years. For those that would like a non-electronic option to log that information, here is a template to use.https://agriculture.ny.gov/system/files/documents/2024/01/eartaglog_singleowner.pdf

Producers will need a PIN (premises identification number) to order tags. If they have received tags from our office before, we likely have a PIN on file for them. We can provide it to them. If they need a PIN, please share this attached document (PIN FAQ tags.pdf) with them. We can also create a PIN for them.

Just a handful of spots left for next week’s Large Animal Rescue Certification Course being put on by Madison County Cooperative Extension.

This informative training will combine hands on and classroom sessions. Several of our veterinarians have participated in classes of this nature previously and found them to be so very informative. Previous classes have been attended by veterinarians, police, firemen, farmers and people interested in volunteering during potential emergencies.

Animal rescue training is limited for many rural first reponders. We could use your help in getting the word across central NY.
The class is also open to large animal owners who are interested in rescue/ emergency situations.

A heads up to any of our clients needing a coggins test in the upcoming month. With a local lab we are generally spoiled to be able to get results extremely quickly, however they will be closed from 11/7-12/12. Although testing can still be performed it will need to be sent out, resulting in a longer turnaround. If your horse needs its coggins test updated during that window please consider scheduling the testing for next week so we can support our local laboratory.

Do you know why a dose of ivermectin or moxidectin containing dewormer is highly recommended for all horses in the fall after a hard frost?

Botfly eggs are a fairly common sight on a horse’s legs in the summer and fall. The article below details the lifecycle, however the short version is that horses chew off the itchy eggs, once in their stomach the larvae attach to the wall of the stomach. These can interfere with digestion causing signs from unthrift to colic and increasing the risk of gastric ulcers. These larvae can remain in the stomach for 6-8 months if left untreated.

We have seen several cases of severe bot infestation and are encouraging deworming at this time after those frosty mornings last week.

Breeding season may be the furthest thing from your mind, but this webinar hosted by the AAEP on Oct 30 will answer a lot of important questions if you have ever thought about breeding your mare.

For clients who are new to breeding horses or possess limited experience, here’s a chance to get up to speed. On Oct. 30, AAEP Horse Owner Education Committee member and board-certified theriogenologist Dr. Dale Kelley will deliver an informative webinar covering the basics of reproductive biology of the horse, the logistics of breeding season, and what to expect when breeding a mare.

The webinar is free but registration is required; a recording will be available for those who can’t attend the live event.

After a lovely summer it would appear that the ticks are back in CNY. We’ve seen multiple cases of anaplasma and some large tick bite reactions. These little nymph ticks are certainly tiny and difficult to see (especially on a horse getting their winter coat), but can carry disease and are important to be on the lookout for.
