On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, Deputies with the Craven County Sheriff's Office Criminal Patrol Bureau attempted to serve active felony warrants for probation violations on Michael Eric Newby at 250 Keener Avenue Lot 41. When Deputies approached the residence, Newby escaped from the residence through a rear window and ran into the woods.

Additional Deputies arrived on scene and began searching for Newby in the area of Keener Avenue and Sand Ridge Road. K9 Elliot was utilized to conduct an article search for Newby which led them to the wooded area near where he was last seen. Deputies deployed an Unmanned Aircraft System (Drone) with thermal imaging capabilities to search the area. The drone operator was able to locate Newby in the area hiding behind a structure off of Stacy Lane.

Deputies were directed to the area where Newby was located, at which time Newby fled the location and moved to another place in the wooded area. A K9 Deputy spotted Newby near Sand Ridge Road and Stacy Lane just a few minutes later. The K9 Deputy pursued Newby back into the wooded area toward Keener Avenue. K9 Elliot was deployed to apprehend Newby and was successfully able to detain Newby. As Deputies approached Newby, he pulled a knife and threatened to stab Deputies and himself. Deputies deployed a taser allowing them to safely take Newby into custody. Emergency Medical Personnel arrived on scene and provided medical care to Newby.

Michael Eric Newby, 32, of New Bern, NC was arrested and charged with the following:

• Assault on Government Official
• Four counts of Resisting a Public Officer
• Carrying a concealed weapon
• Two counts of Felony Probation Violation

Newby was transported to the Craven County Detention Center and took before the Magistrate. He was issued a $7,500 secured bond for the new charges and scheduled for his first appearance on July 17, 2024 at the Craven County Courthouse in Courtroom Number 4 at 9:00am. Newby was issued a $20,000 secured bond for the probation violation charges and scheduled for his first appearance on June 10, 2024 at the Craven County Courthouse in Courtroom Number 1 at 9:30am.

Please help us thank Protection4Paws for donating these bags to all the Handlers that attended K9 Law & Order!!

Active Fundraising Links are below

We're thrilled to announce that during the 2024 K9 Law & Order Event, K9 Elliot, K9 Athos, K9 Echo, K9 Bear, K9 Viper, K9 Dare and K9 Tia of the Craven County Sheriff's Office - K-9 Unit in NC were awarded a K9 Medical Kit (Buddy Bag) courtesy of Protection4Paws. This generous donation from the non-profit charity aims to equip Law Enforcement K9s with essential tools for their safety and well-being.

During the event, we distributed over 63 bags, each valued at $400, which has significantly impacted our inventory and funds. To mitigate this impact, we've established personal fundraising links for each K9 who received a Buddy Bag. Recovering some of the funds will enable us to safeguard more K9 teams. Your support in assisting with covering the expense of the kit is invaluable. Such donations are instrumental in furthering our mission to support other K9 teams in need. We greatly appreciate your generosity and commitment to our cause.

Protection4Paws, based in PA, is committed to supplying K9s with the necessary items to enhance their protection while they tirelessly serve our communities. Time is of the essence in treating severe injuries, and our K9 Medical Kit (Buddy Bag), valued at $400.00, plays a crucial role in ensuring a swift and effective medical response.

April is Canine Fitness Month! Sheriffs’ office K9s and their deputies serve communities across North Carolina. K9s undergo rigorous training before they do the first day’s work for a sheriff’s office. To stay both mentally and physically fit, their handlers must continue to train them on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. Did you know that sheriffs’ K9s in North Carolina are used to sniff out drugs, search for missing persons and cadavers, and even find explosives?

(K9s featured are Deputy Drifter - Pitt County (top left), K9 Jax - Brunswick County (bottom left), K9 Bond - Onslow County (top right), and K9 Tia - Craven County (bottom right).
