🚨‼️EMERGENCY‼️🚨
If your pet is trying to urinate and can not, this is an emergency. When your pet has a urinary blockage and thus cannot urinate, their bladder continues to fill and then starts to back up into their kidneys causing damage. A urinary blockage can have numerous causes but they are all emergencies. To determine the cause and treatment options, your vet may recommend x-rays, bloodwork, urinalysis, and/or ultrasound.
Below is a video of a cats bladder during an ultrasound. The black circle is the cat's bladder and the "snow globe" effect is caused by crystals floating in the urine.
Microscope Monday
On today's episode we're getting an ear full! A ear full of ear mites that is! Ear mites are highly contagious and can be passed to your pet through direct contact with another infected animal. While both dogs and cats can get these mites, we mostly see them in young kittens that have been found or recently adopted. Typical signs of ear mite infection are itchy ears with black debris that looks like coffee grounds. Treatment is straight forward with a good ear cleaning and medications.
It's Microscope Monday
Heartworm disease is a serious condition and can result in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in dogs and cats. While there is a treatment for heartworm disease in dogs, there is NO treatment in cats. We recommend heartworm prevention for dogs and cats ALL YEAR since this disease is transmitted by mosquitoes.
In the video below, you can see the "baby" heartworms (microfilaria) moving around in a blood smear.
