Whelen entered the shelter as a stray at the beginning of November, so we have no idea what his breed mix is or what his life was like before he landed at HSNBA. He's about 60 pounds, fixed, vaccinated, microchipped and heartworm negative.
But we recognized right away that this "plain brown dog" was going to get overlooked here at the shelter and potentially deteriorate behaviorally if it took him a long time to get adopted. So, we put out an urgent plea to find Whelen a FOSTER HOME who could house him temporarily, get to know him better than we could here in the shelter and help us figure out the best family for him to thrive.
And boy oh boy did he find a great foster home! They have discovered he's a terrific house guest, LOVES toys and balls, is housetrained and crate trained and is very much a "Velcro dog" - he loves to be right by your side all the time. He loves being out in the yard and getting zoomies in the grass - he would probably really prefer a fenced yard over apartment living unless his adopters are VERY active outside of the apartment. He's great with kids but still working on basic manners like jumping up on folks when he gets excited, so a home with seniors may not be a great fit. He hasn’t much of a chance to interact with other dogs, so if you have a dog at home, we would like to do a “Meet and Greet” to make sure they get along!
Whelen's Foster Home needed a little break, so Whelen is not back at the shelter, why don't you drop by and see him this week!

Meet Sunshine! As her name implies, she is a ray of sunshine in the shelter! Sunshine is a special kitty that has been diagnosed with possible cancer by one of our vets. We don’t know how much time she has left, or how much care she might require, so we are wanting to find a “hospice adopter” for her. Unfortunately, Sunshine has tiny scabs and abrasions on the outside of her ears, and she has a soft mass in her right ear. She also has a small lump on her back hip that needs a biopsy, as well as a few other lumps and bumps throughout her body.
She may have years left or only a few months. We just don’t know. What we do know is that she is a very sweet little lady who loves to purr and just needs a lap on which to sit. She absolutely loves her scratcher posts and getting lots of pets and attention.
If you are interested in Sunshine and giving her a permanent place to call home, despite her medical issues, please fill out an application on our website or come by HSNBA to visit. We want to Sunshine a second chance at a first class life!

Re-posting so we can pin to the top! Thank you so much to those who have already donated.
Do you remember when we needed help with organizing the coordinator's office? Our amazing community stepped up with purchasing organizing bins, and we posted the after pics recently, and it looks amazing! Well, it's time for the back hall, a HUGE project. Anyone who has seen the back hall and enrichment shelves knows this is going to be a big job. Our cat program manager, Jenna, has measured and researched and drawn out on graph paper some organization and structure for this back hall to help with tidying things up.

We have created an Amazon wishlist with all of our organizing needs according to the exact size bins and our plans for making this hallway much more presentable and easy to find items once in their proper places. This has been on our radar to fix for over a year, and we're hoping yall can help!
Love Bug was adopted from us as a puppy way back in 2019. We aren’t sure how, but she ended up in Beaumont, Texas where an amazing Animal Care Officer went above and beyond to get her to safety and that story can be read here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1A6872n7tx/?mibextid=wwXIfr
Our Rescue Coordinator ALSO went above and beyond to get Love Bug BACK to New Braunfels and now we need to find her a place of her own.
Love Bug is 6 years old, just under 50 pounds and our best guess as to her breed is husky/heeler/pitbull (but let’s be honest, it’s just a guess!) She has been so easy going and hasn’t met a stranger – she just loves everyone she meets and this week had an amazing “Doggy Day Out” with a volunteer! She got to visit Landa Park, do a little shopping, get a pup cup and hang out on the Square at a coffee shop!
We’ll probably never know how the bond was broken between Love Bug and her original adopters, but it is clear she was loved and cared for since she was adopted from HSNBA as a puppy. Now it’s time to turn the page on her past and write her NEXT chapter – one hopefully full of the love and adoration she so very much deserves.
Love Bug is eligible for adoption, foster care or transport to a trusted rescue partner. She is spayed, chipped, vaccinated and heartworm negative. Let’s get Love Bug out of a CAGE and onto a COUCH!

When Juniper entered the shelter at the beginning of the month, we were not sure we’d be able to help her. She was growling and snapping at everyone, flinched when we reached a kind hand to her, and she was too scared to even eat. She was so engorged with milk it was obvious she’d been removed from her puppies far too quickly and abruptly; we suspect they were sold and she was abandoned to fend for herself as she was found alone, with no sign of her puppies anywhere to be found.
But in just 3 short weeks, through the dedication and determination of our staff, Juniper was confident enough to go on a Doggy Day Out to Lowes today! She is scheduled to get spayed tomorrow so she’ll never again have to worry about being used for breeding.
However, during her medical evaluation, Juniper was discovered to be heartworm positive. Heartworms is a fatal parasite – totally preventable with a monthly preventative from the vet – but deadly if not treated. The treatment can be difficult and expensive and cannot be started until we have secured a foster home for her to recover in for the next 6-8 weeks.
Due to the recent overcrowding and her heartworm status, Juniper is now at risk of euthanasia if we cannot secure her a foster home (or better foster to adopt home!) by MONDAY February 3rd.
This dog has come so far in such a short period of time, but we have done everything we can for her in the shelter environment – it’s imperative she finds a foster home as soon as possible so we can start on treating those heartworms and get her started on her next chapter – hopefully one much brighter than her past.

BLue Needs a HERO!
We first met Blue in 2018, when he entered the shelter as a stray. He was reclaimed fairly quickly and was microchipped before he left, so we met him again almost exactly 6 years later, we knew exactly who he was. Officers left door hangers at his residence (very close to where he was found), we called, we emailed, we texted, we sent Facebook messages…. All went unanswered.
It was the holidays, so we thought maybe his owners were out of town, having left Blue in the care of friends or neighbors, and at the time, we were not overly full, so we could give them all the time they needed to come get their dog. But sadly, after a month, with absolutely no contact from his previous owners – we have to accept they aren’t coming.
Blue was heartworm positive back in 2018, and tested positive again this year, so we can only assume they never got him treated and were never keeping him on any sort of heartworm preventative. Being heartworm positive for AT LEAST 6 years (that we know of, could be longer) can do real damage to a dog’s internal organs so we got him over the vet for a senior panel and to make sure there had not yet been any irreversible damage. His bloodwork was far from ideal, but still good enough to begin heartworm treatment this week.
Blue is a pit bull terrier, about 60 pounds, neutered and we are guessing at least 10 years old. Blue is great on a leash, appears house trained, terrific in the car, dog AND cat friendly and so far has loved pretty much everyone he has met.
Blue needs a Foster or Foster to Adopt placement for the next 8-12 weeks to continue to support his heartworm treatment. During this period, he needs to be kept mostly calm, crated mostly, and only out for on leash walks – absolutely no romping with other dogs or off leash time in the yard – but once those heartworms are good and dead, he can go back to being a regular dog.
His life expectancy MAY be shortened by him having these heartworms go so long without being treated,
Happy NEW YEARS DAY! The shelter is CLOSED to the public today but our staff is still here hard at work making sure everyone is happy and healthy!
Dog's like KEVIN make it easy! He's got SO MUCH personality crammed into his stocky little body he is a joy to take care of.
Kevin landed at the shelter as a stray at the beginning of December and he's a real character! There's something about those expressive pit bull faces that wins us over every time!
Kevin seems great around other dogs, is about 60 pounds, and heartworm negative and of course vaccinated and microchipped. We canNOT recommend him to a home with cats.
This dog is guaranteed to keep you laughing with is goofball antics and genuine love of life!
Interested in Kevin? Submit an ADOPTION APPLICATION: https://www.hsnba.org/adopt/adopt-a-dog/ or just swing by and meet him!
We'll reopen tomorrow, Thursday the 2nd at 10 am!

Looking for a new way to get out and about and give back in 2025?
Check out our "Doggy Day Out" Program! It's when volunteers "check out" a dog for the day to visit pet friendly establishments, got to the park, and get a pup cup! It’s a great outing for our junior volunteers to do with a parent or guardian and as you can tell – the dog’s love it!
Pictured here is Guinevere, who as you can tell not only loves kids, but was a dream in the car and at the park! She’s a young (8-month-old) terrier mix weighing in at a petite 40 pounds! She came in as a stray at the beginning of December and is eagerly awaiting a new home!
Find out more about our Doggy Day Out program and all of the ways volunteers can help the shelter pets on our website: https://www.hsnba.org/get-involved/volunteer/

If you're home over the new year's holiday and want to add some fun and energy to your household, here are some of our kitties still at the shelter that need a foster home over the next few weeks! Some have medical needs and others need a little bit of socialization, while most of them just need more room to room and be a cat or kitten until they are fixed.
If you're interested in fostering any of these guys, email [email protected], or stop by the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area at 3353 Morningside Drive. ♥️
