Foster Feature! Meet Polly โค๏ธ
Polly first arrived at HSNBA in early January, and in that time, sheโs touched a lot of hearts. Volunteers, fosters, and community members have all rallied behind her and followed her journey. Polly has made a lot of friends, but she still needs her special person who can give her the home she deserves.

โIf Disney wrote a redemption arc for a traumatized little goblin who learns to love againโฆ it would still fall short of Pollyโ and, yesโฆ this is THAT kind of story.
Polly didnโt come into this world with a silver spoon. She came in swinging and scrambling through survival with a brain full of static and a heart that had no idea what safety felt like. She landed at the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area right after Christmas and, while everyone else was posting holiday selfies in matching pajamas, Polly was in a kennel learning how to disappear.
She wasnโt wagging her tail. She wasnโt giving sad eyes. She was justโฆ shut down. A ghost of a dog. The kind of quiet that doesnโt ask for help anymore.
People walked past her like furniture. The golden retrievers got adopted. The doodles got bows. Polly got a bite label. Not because sheโs bad, but because fear in a shelter gets you filed under โdifficultโฆโ and difficult dogs donโt make it to the happy ending part of the storyโ yet Polly decided sheโd write her own ending.
She got pulled into foster care and began the long, awkward process of becoming a dog again. A real one. With opinions.
โฆand zoomies.
โฆand an irrational fear of chickens (yes, chickensโฆ please donโt ask).
Today, Polly is a little over a year old and 100% a choose-your-own-adventure mutt. Lab? Pit Bull? Emotional support cryptid? Sheโs whatever you need her to be and, now that sheโs decided life might be worth living, sheโs thriving.
She is:
โข GREAT with cats
โข Obsessed with her dog friends
โข Scared of poultry
โข A flight risk for the first few weeks (think: Olympic-level fence gymnast)
โข And learning (very slowly) that humans might not all be villains
She will never be the dog that comes home and instantly curls up in your lap like a Hallmark movie, but give her time and she will become the dog who leans into your ribs like sheโs trying to merge souls.
She needs:
โข A securely fenced yard (seriously, we are not kidding)
โข A home with another balanced, friendly dog
โข A human who doesnโt need instant gratification to feel loved
โข Someone who finds joy in the slow, quiet moments
โข An experienced and competent handler
Pollyโs love isnโt free, but you can earn it and, when you do, itโs the kind of love that undoes you. The kind that reminds you what resilience looks like and the kind that turns a shut-down shelter ghost into someoneโs reason to rush home at the end of the day.
She isnโt easy, but if youโre the kind of person who believes the best things in life are earned, or you find meaning in the slow build and in those tiny, silent victories, then Polly isnโt just your dog. Sheโs your mirror, your reminder, your once-in-a-lifetime because, one day (not right away, but one day), sheโll crawl into your lap, melt into your chest, and exhale three lifetimes of fear.
โฆand that will be the moment, youโll realize you didnโt just save herโ you became the person she was waiting for all along.โ
Polly is a little over 1 year, 38 lbs (she is fully grown), up to date on vaccines, heartworm/flea prevention, microchipped, and she is spayed!
The support for Polly doesnโt end at adoption. Our team will be there every step of the way โ and a generous local trainer has even offered up to four free in-home training sessions to help make Pollyโs next chapter her most successful yet!
