Our friends at Our Farm Sanctuary are going through a rough spot. Please read this post, and remember, it isn't just them. Unfortunately, cats (and other pets!) are in need of help in overwhelming numbers all around the area, and rescues are swamped. Anything you can do to help would be so appreciated...fostering, volunteering, and especially adopting a new friend.
Here at Windreach, we can also help control pet overpopulation by spaying and neutering both your personal pets and stray cats in the community before they can reproduce and add to the burden these rescues and shelters already bear.
Open letter about where we are
We're going to be really candid here, and I hope you can understand.
Regarding cats:
We are forced to publicly state that for the forseeable future, we are closed for intake on cats.
Some quick facts: We are double our comfortable numbers. That's awful for us, but it's not good for the cats, either.
We are in no way funded by tax dollars and none of us are paid staff. That said, several of us see more than 50 hours of work a week. We sacrifice time meant for jobs, family, and any sense of time for self. Everyone is dealing in high numbers, but we are currently serving your communities to the tune of over 500 cats. No, they are not all on property. Yes, each of them are known and recorded and taken to vets and paid for by OFS. A good many of them do reside here. Those that do not will end up here if they don't find a home.
We know of no group anywhere that is doing this much.
That is not a criticism of them, it's a warning to us.
When you have a facility it gets easy to overload. People take advantage, and we try to make just a bit more space where we can.
Also, and this is a big thing to remember: IT HURTS LIKE CRAZY TO TURN THEM AWAY.
We didn't start a rescue to watch suffering from afar, popcorn in hand. We adore these guys:
Those we've met, those who need us, those out there in need whom we've yet to meet. We are a team of animal lovers, it should go without saying.
For K-9, Farm animals or Wildlife
You can contact us about dogs and farm animals, and you can reach out to Erica Miller, Wildlife Rehabilitator for any wildlife concerns.
This is a very painful decision and one not made lightly.
We have done more than our part. We've done it when asked and we've had people like the lady today who dumped four bottle babies on our property after being told we could not take them force our hand. (You will be hearing from us, Ma'am)
BTW, we can't take bottle babies when we have no nursing mother and no bottle feeders. So, thank you for the quartet of tragedy, Lady.
We've taken on the emergencies, and those cats the public failed and failed in a huge way.
But we are closing our intake doors until we have ONE HUNDRED & FIFTY adoptions. 150 ONE FIVE OH-that's-a lot-of-cats.
How can you help?
We always need fosters, of course. Fosters lighten the load for our superheroic, superexhausted med team.
We desperately need volunteers for cage care, cleaning, helping in medical, any of those. You needn't be comfortable with all of them.
Open hours: you just hang out on the cat floor and make sure our cats are available to be seen by potential applicants for adoption.
Events: we say no to so many events where our cats could be seen, our rescue can become known and adoptions can happen.
Please get creative. Find ways to take on a project. Make it a family thing. A teachable moment. We can provide advice and least expensive resource ideas. When we open up again, we can maybe work with you as a foster.
Please be patient and kind with us.
We are struggling. Please don't ask, don't threaten, just understand and help us reach our adoption goal.
Pursue ideas: if you think a seniors for seniors program is a good next step, help us by contacting some specific assisted living establishments. If you have an events idea, get it started and present it to us with as much done as possible.
Share us far and wide. Remember when you first visited this crazy place? How much fun it was to see the farm animals, to experience our open adoption floor. How loved you felt when our cats swarmed you? If you were feline the love, go ahead and share it.
We're determined to open up as soon as possible. Watch for our countdown as we start adopting. May 150 happen quickly. (We will keep the same standards and screening, but we might run a little special to help us meet our goal)
Thank you for all you do to keep our spirits up. This work is an honor.
