Temperatures are set to plummet this coming week. And it has been a cold snowy season already. This time of year is rough, not just on us, but on our pets as well. There are some important things to remember when things get cold.

Keep your pets indoors. Having a fur coat doesn't mean your pet doesn't get cold. Keep potty breaks short for your dogs. And keep cats indoors. This goes for car rides as well. If they don't need to be out, leave your pets at home. Roadways can be dangerous, cars can break down, etc. They are safer at home where it's warm.

If you have to have your pet outside, make sure to provide good shelter. Dogs need a box that will keep them dry and maintain their body temperature. Don't use blankets or hay. While they are warm, when they get wet, they retain that moisture and keep your dog box wet and cold. Straw is a good insulator and it is waterproof. This goes for cats as well. There are many tips online for warm cat housing.

You'll want heated water dishes for any pets kept outdoors. They need access to drinkable, clean water.

Watch out for salt on pathing and roadways. Salt can get stuck in your pets paw pads and cause cuts. It is also toxic if they eat it. Use pet safe salt anywhere your pets will walk, and check between their pads when they come in from outside. This goes for snow and ice as well. Longer haired dogs especially can get snow and ice trapped between their toes.

If you happen to see any animal that is without access to proper shelter, food, and unfrozen water, you can call Public Safety at 724-656-9300. We are their voice.

Remember, while winter can be a beautiful season, it can also be dangerous. Keep yourselves and your pets safe this season.
