Sheriff Louis Falco III is pleased to announce the newest addition to the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) with the K9 Team of PO Mark Colon and K9 Reedy. K9 Reedy is a 14-month-old German Shepherd from Poland. The RCSO was able to purchase K9 Reedy utilizing asset forfeiture money.
K9 Reedy is named in honor of Patrol Officer Michael J. Reedy of the Orangetown Police Department. On August 2, 1973, PO Reedy along with PO Thomas Kennedy were struck and killed by a drunk driver’s vehicle while they were directing traffic at an accident scene on Route 303 in Blauvelt.
Next week, PO Colon and K9 Reedy will start Patrol School run by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Upon successful completion of this long and intensive training, K9 Reedy will be certified in tracking, evidence recovery, criminal apprehension, handler protection and narcotics detection. We welcome our newest K9 Team and wish them good luck in the academy!!

Most dental disease occurs below the gum line, where it’s hard to see. As you can appreciate from these canine (first x-ray) and feline (second x-ray) dental radiographs, more than half the tooth lives beneath the gum line in the bone of the jaw. This is why dental x-rays are imperative in assessing dental disease in veterinary patients. The third photo shows the position that the x-ray plate needs to be in the mouth in order to acquire these images, providing one out of many explanations for the need for anesthesia during these procedures.

Yesterday, Bo**er went from pet to patient of Animal Medical! He is recovering well, but did undergo surgery yesterday for a chronic condition. The surgery, called a Ventral Bulla Osteotomy (VBO), is performed in cats with chronic middle ear disease. When Bo**er was adopted by the Animal Medical family, he was found to have HUGE nasopharyngeal polyps growing from his ears! These were removed orally, but the unreachable tissue left behind in his middle ear remained a constant problem. Suffering from ear infections and some neurologic deficits, we knew it was time for surgery.

During a VBO, the bulla/middle ear is opened up and cleared of any abnormal tissue, fluid, or infection. We found more polyp tissue and some fluid in Bo**er’s middle ear which was removed. This procedure does leave patients largely deaf, but much more comfortable (in Bo**er’s case, he was deaf already!) In 2 weeks, he should be as good as new and back to screaming up and down the halls of the hospital.

Please wish Bo**er a healthy recovery!

Here at AMNC, we have always cautioned the inclusion of raw food in your pets diet. The Avian Flu has been a worldwide concern for a while, and it’s starting to make its way into pet food. Recently, the bird flu was found in raw food that was being fed to a cat in Oregon. Just a reminder to be diligent in selecting the food that is right for your pet.
