Jack, a 6 year old cat, came in recently for a COHAT - a complete oral health assessment and treatment. Jack had stage 1 dental disease but the owner wanted to assess and clean his teeth, in hopes none would have to be removed.
After quick anesthesia and dental radiographs, his teeth were descaled and polished. The owner was pleased that no teeth needed to be extracted and he had fresh breath again!

While twice daily brushing is the best way to keep your pets teeth disease free, regular dental assessments and cleaning can keep your dog or cats mouth healthy and happy.

Disease of the month: Otitis Externa (ear infections!)

Ear infections are one of the most common diseases that general practice veterinarians diagnose and treat on a daily basis. Here is a quick summary on why pets suffer from ear infections and how they are treated.

Symptoms: redness, inflammation, itchiness, and pain of the outside and/or inside of one or both ear canals are common symptoms of infection. Abnormal discharge (dark/waxy, pus, excessive wax) is also a common finding in pets with ear infections.

Causes and factors: **there is always a primary reason for an ear infection!**
Causes - allergies, parasites, foreign bodies, skin disorders, autoimmune diseases, etc
Factors - conformation, excessive moisture, inner ear infection
The two types of infectious agents seen with otitis are bacteria and yeast. These organisms are normally found on the skin (and in the ears) and will create infection when one of the causes or factors above is present.

Treatment: topical therapy is key. Some patients will need a combination of topical therapy (ear drops) and systemic medications to help with pain and inflammation.

If you have any questions about your pets ears, give our office a call!

At Animal Medical of New City, we are committed to providing the most advanced and compassionate care for your pets. One of the cutting-edge procedures we offer is Laparoscopic Ovariectomy, a minimally invasive alternative to the conventional ovariohysterectomy (spay). This technique offers several significant advantages that enhance your dog’s health and well-being, and it represents a shift in how veterinarians approach spaying, particularly for large breed dogs and those spayed later in life.

How insurance made a pet’s condition affordable, case #2

Hopper is a 7 year old mix who presented to his vet for an elevated body temp and vomiting in June. It was suspected he was exposed to mothballs by a neighbor who threw them in his yard to keep foxes away. Hopper was rushed to an emergency hospital with no improvement in his condition. He was transferred to his local vet the next day for more diagnostics where they found highly elevated liver values. It was determined that he would need round the clock care at a referral and specialty hospital. After a few days, Hopper made big improvements and was discharged for home monitoring and care. Hopper continued to improve and his liver values continued to decrease. Then at the beginning of July, the entire scenario repeated and Hopper found himself back in the ICU, but in much worse condition. He was suffering from liver failure and was turning yellow with jaundice. He spent several days in the ICU and received a few blood transfusions to help his condition. He was finally discharged several days later and has been on the mend since. His liver values have mostly returned to normal and he gets regular checks to ensure he is improving. The total cost of his care between both events was $19,864.19. His owner had insurance which covered $16,553.49 of his total care. Without insurance, his owner would have never been able to afford his medical care. Hopper is alive and well today due to the care of his doctors and the financial support of his insurance company.
