This business was started in 2010 by Sara Gilbertson, DVM. After 5 years in private practice, predominately equine and dairy, I decided to go back to school and became certified in animal chiropractic. The addition of alternative medicine to my traditional veterinary medicine background has completely broadened my treatment process. The use of chiropractic in my veterinary practice has helped so m

any of my patients with acute or chronic disease or performance issues both equine and canine alike. I am also currently working with dairy cattle for many of the same issues and others: reproduction, lameness, and injury.

Who knew that after all these years I finally figured out why Poco is always trying to pull my bale away from me (typically while I’m standing on it). He apparently wanted to see what it was like to stand on it too. Honestly, he did this all by himself while hooked to crossties. I only wish I had taken a video for proof but I was honestly laughing too hard and in total disbelief because he had to flip it on its side and maneuver over the top of it and then step up! I think he missed his trick pony calling. ❤️ you Poco, you are one of the most expressive patients! Trisha Fasse Neerhof

💥💥Oxidative Stress and your dog💥💥

The concept of defending pet health in order to create optimum health is based on what we can do to prevent the onset of serious health issues, delay the onset of age-related diseases and extend the number of healthy years we have to enjoy our best friends.
Science tells us that one of the greatest threats to an animal’s health is Oxidative Stress. Oxidative stress is the resultant imbalance between the daily production of free radicals, also known as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), and the existing free radical scavenging capacity or antioxidant system capability of the dog and cat. 🐕 🐈

The damage that free radicals produce contributes to a number of harmful effects such as:

* A decline in the immune system
* The deterioration of bones, joints and connective tissue
* Damages the eyes, heart, skin and lungs
* Deterioration of neurons in the brain
* Damages most organ systems
* Muscle protein breakdown
* Decreased nutrient absorption
* Increased incidence of disease
* Speeds up the aging process

NRF2 is a protein that regulates the expression of antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

Petandim sends signals to the brain that tells the body of your pet to turn back on. It begins to make more of its own antioxidants that combats free radicals and it reduces oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is linked to hundreds of different diseases, inflammation, and even the aging process. It helps with the recovery process, protects cells and so much more.

This case is nothing short of a miracle! It’s too amazing not to share. Meet 22-year-old Cody. He was an emergency visit on a very cold January night. He was losing control of his hindend. He was stumbling, unable to turn circles easily and falling. After examining him, EPM was at the top of my list. We kept him in a stall and sent blood work out for testing. I started him on bute, Vit E and ulcergard. His neurologic status was deteriorating and we decided to start Marquis (EPM treatment) before the blood work returned. About a week later, Cody‘s neurologic status continued to deteriorate and the blood work came back positive for EPM. He progressed to being unable to stand unless leaning on the stall wall and could not turn circles anymore. I will admit that I thought his future seemed bleak and short. I started performing weekly acupuncture sessions and his owners did daily physical therapy to keep him moving even if it was just back-and-forth against the wall in his stall. About three weeks into his treatments, he started to be able to bear weight for a few seconds by himself. We continued along the same course and then started a second month of Marquis. Every week Cody continue to make small improvements. We were able to start to turn him around in his stall with a lot of assistance and he occasional he would lay down and struggle but be able to get back up on his own. This progress was amazing but he was still relying on his stall wall most of the time and we were nearing the end of second month of Marquis. I spoke with two veterinarians at Merial about continuing Marquis for a 3rd month but it was decided between all parties that it most likely would not help at this point.

I had diagnosed another horse in my practice with EPM several months earlier. While at this clients farm, she told me she had started her horse on Protandim Nrf2 and he had made a great amount of improvement. Why not try this for Cody?

About three weeks ago Cody was started on Protandim Nrf2 twice daily, Marquis was finished a little over two weeks ago, and we continued aggressive physical therapy and weekly acupuncture sessions. He has gained strength and confidence. He is able to stand on his own for 10-15 minutes and yesterday we walked him outside for the first time in 70 days!! I feel the Protandim Nrf2 was the extra help his body needed. I will definitely be recommending it in the future for humans, horses and dogs. I must say his owners are amazingly dedicated people. ❤️ crazyyellowpill.com contact me for more details

How do horses injure themselves in such unexpected ways? This will forever be a question we ask as veterinarians. A particularly unique case came to us this summer when we received a call that a mare had impaled her head on a pole and was coming to Iowa State.

The mare was seen to be acting normally the previous night, and the following morning was found with this wound in her pen. She was brought to Iowa State and the extent of the wound was evaluated with radiographs, computed tomography and surgery. Drs. Caston and Jackson attended to the mare throughout her stay, assisted by a large team of veterinary students and technicians. Dr. Caston recently presented this case at the South Dakota Veterinary Conference.

Amazingly, the mare did very well post operatively with some remaining nasal discharge and increased difficulty eating. The mare also managed to sustain her pregnancy and is expected to foal this spring.

We waited a little while to post this story. This was both to ensure the mare had time to heal and to allow one of our technicians to present the case at the American Association of Equine Practitioners conference in San Antonio. Lisa Leake just finished her presentation and we wanted to share this fantastic story with everyone. We are amazed daily at the resilience of horses! How did it happen? Only she knows!
