Happy National Walk Your Dog Week!
Walking your dog daily is crucial for several reasons:
1. **Physical Exercise**: It helps maintain a healthy weight, keeps muscles toned, and promotes cardiovascular health.
2. **Mental Stimulation**: Exploring new environments, encountering different sights, sounds, and smells engages their mind, preventing boredom and potential behavioral issues.
3. **Socialization**: It allows them to interact with other dogs and people, enhancing their social skills and reducing anxiety around unfamiliar situations.
4. **Behavioral Benefits**: Regular walks can help reduce hyperactivity, anxiety, and destructive behaviors in dogs.
5. **Bonding Opportunity**: It strengthens the bond between you and your dog through shared experiences and positive reinforcement.
6. **Joint Health**: Walking helps maintain healthy joints and can be particularly beneficial for older dogs or those with arthritis.
7. **Regulation of Bowel Movements**: It establishes a routine, making it easier to predict when your dog will need to relieve themselves.
Remember, the specific exercise needs can vary depending on the breed, age, and health of your dog, so it's important to tailor the walk to their individual requirements. 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

Did you know it is Deaf Dog Awareness Week?
Deafness is often overlooked as a disability since the pet isn’t struggling with mobility. However, deaf pets need to adapt to a different way of life and proper training and a devoted owner means a deaf dog can still live their best life.
Deafness in dogs can be present from birth due to congenital deafness or acquired as they age. Some signs to look out for to identify deafness in your dog are:
- Lack of attention when you call their name
- No longer running to the door when someone comes home
- Sleeping more deeply or getting startled more easily
- Not responding to squeaky toys during playtime
Some ways to support your deaf pets:
- Training them to respond to hand signals, make sure to shower them with attention and treats when they respond correctly to the visual cue
- Use a flashlight at night or in the dark to get their attention
- Get their attention before initiating contact (petting, trying to play with them, etc.) as they cannot hear your approach and may get startled
- Keep them on a leash to help keep them safe as they cannot hear traffic or the presence of other dogs
- Get a personalized tag that identifies them as deaf as well as having your contact information.
- Microchip them
If your pet is exhibiting any of these signs, be sure to talk to tour veterinarian.

Project RISE is working to build exterior kennels/runs at the Iberia Parish Shelter-there are currently none. Shelter animals deserve fresh air and sunshine. We have raised funds to build 6-kennels just working out the details and waiting to get approval from the parish to start the work. We plan to raise funds to build more!
