Sprout

🐱Dr. Agnes had the pleasure of meeting Sprout, an 8-week-old domestic short-haired feline who was affected by a cuterebra. 😱
Cuterebra, also known as bot flies, are sizable insects that deposit their eggs in proximity to the nests and burrows of small mammals, such as cats. Manifesting as swollen areas beneath the skin featuring a central pore, these lesions are commonly found around the head or neck region. Veterinary intervention is essential for treating Cuterebra lesions, involving the extraction of the fly larva from the affected animal. Post larval removal, the wound is meticulously cleansed and irrigated. Additionally, the impacted cat may necessitate antibiotic therapy for complete recovery. Our team hopes you feel much better Sprout! 💛 #SpansihTrailVets #STAH

Case Study: Smores
⚠️Includes sensitive clinic footage. Viewer discretion is advised ⚠️
Smores, a 7-month-old domestic shorthair cat, was found entangled on a fence by his left hind leg at his family's home. Following this incident, he was expeditiously taken to our clinic for evaluation, and a radiographic assessment was performed by Dr. Lauren. 🐱🩻
It was determined that Smores' left hind leg suffered a circumferential wound, abrasions, and hair loss. He could no longer bear weight on the leg. His toes were purple in color from lack of blood flow. 😿
Dr. Lauren recommended keeping Smores confined in a small room, massaging the leg to help stimulate blood flow, applying ointment to the wound, and hydrotherapy. He was prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and pain medication. Unfortunately, if the blood supply is completely damaged in the leg, Smores may need to have his leg amputated.
We wish you the best and a quick recovery, Smores! 🧡

Trigger, a long-haired dachshund, exhibited signs of discomfort, specifically limping and pain in his hind legs. 🐶
Upon evaluation by Dr. Lauren, it was determined that Trigger had sustained a spinal injury, likely from a high-impact jump. Following this diagnosis, Trigger was instructed to rest in a kennel and was provided with a regimen of pain medications, anti-inflammatories, and muscle relaxants. Encouragingly, Trigger displayed prompt signs of recovery shortly after commencing treatment. 💙
‼️Dachshunds are predisposed to spinal injuries more than other breeds because of their elongated spines. A prevalent spinal ailment affecting dachshunds is intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), where the cushions between the spinal vertebrae protrude or rupture, exerting pressure on the spinal cord nerves. This condition may result in pain, nerve impairment, urinary and fecal incontinence, and potential paralysis. ‼️

Did you know that less than 10% of the pets that are unchipped will return home each year? 😓
A microchip is a secure, reliable, permanent identification for your pet and the process is simple and affordable. Microchipping your pet can help ensure that if your pet goes missing, they can be identified and find their way back to you. 🏠
If your pet is chipped, make sure their information is up to date. To help keep pets close to their loved ones, share this post and remind your friends to #ChipYourPet!

Our senior patient Padmé, an 11-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, was scheduled for her annual professional teeth cleaning. 🦷 Before beginning her dental, Dr. Lauren Dartez performed an examination followed by bloodwork and dental radiographs.
🩻Her x-rays indicated there was a fractured tooth and two dental abscesses. Both teeth were successfully removed her from mouth. Padmé was placed on oral pain medication and antibiotics. We hope you feel much better now, Padmé!
🐶Dogs lack the ability to communicate when they are experiencing dental issues, often concealing pain even when afflicted. Consequently, radiographs serve as a fundamental diagnostic tool for veterinarians to detect severe dental conditions in dogs. It is imperative for dogs to undergo thorough oral examinations under anesthesia in the presence of indicators like missing, discolored, or fractured teeth, inflamed gums, oral abnormalities, or halitosis. Moreover, even in the absence of visible symptoms, regular annual dental radiographs are recommended to ensure comprehensive oral health monitoring for dogs. 😁
Here are some common signs of dental pain and disease:
🦷Dropping kibble when eating
🦷Chewing on one side
🦷Preferring soft/canned food over dry/kibble
🦷Halitosis (bad breath)
🦷Increased drooling or blood in saliva
🦷Swelling around the mouth, face or teeth
🦷Pawing at the mouth/ rubbing their face
🦷Sudden change in behavior

Luna - Dog Fight Case Study
⚠ Includes sensitive clinic footage. Viewer discretion is advised ⚠
Luna, a 5-year-old chihuahua mix, was brought to STAH with a significant laceration and bite marks on her body. 😱Upon learning that Luna had been attacked by a larger dog due to food aggression, Dr. Agnes promptly commenced surgery on Luna.
👩⚕️Dr. Agnes sutured torn muscles, placed a penrose drain, and sutured the skin. Luna was prescribed pain medications and antibiotics while being confined and monitored by her family. We wish Luna good luck with her recovery! ❤️
Here are some ways to attend to dogs with food aggression:
✅Clear away empty food bowls following meals.
✅Refrain from disturbing your dog while it is eating or removing its food bowl.
✅Establish set meal times instead of allowing continuous access to food.
✅Exercise caution when altering your dog's diet, as unfamiliar food may be perceived as more desirable.
✅Provide meals in a secluded area, using barriers such as a crate, baby gate, closed door, or other means to prevent disturbances.
✅Position the food bowl in a tranquil location to minimize social pressure on your dog during feeding.
✅Educate children on the importance of not approaching a dog while it is eating, resting, or in possession of a cherished chew toy.
If your dog is already exhibiting food bowl aggression, professional guidance is recommended! #SpanishTrailVets #STAH #VetMed #NVAPETS
May 17 is #WorldBakingDay! 🍞🥖 Here are some of our patients kneading or commonly known as "making biscuits"!
According to AAHA website, the following reasons are why your cats knead:
🐱To get comfortable — Wild cats knead grass to create a comfortable resting place. The same is true for domestic cats, who often knead soft objects before lying down. Once they snuggle in, a cat may continue kneading to convey their contentment.
🐱To show affection — Cats may knead their favorite people or other household pets to show affection as they did with their mothers.
🐱To scent mark — Kneading their favorite bedding, places, or people leaves scent markings from glands in the feet, effectively claiming them as their own.
Feel free to share videos of your cats kneading hard in the kitchen below 😂⬇️

❤We recently had the pleasure of welcoming a new puppy to our STAH family! Meet Libby! She is a 13-week-old miniature Australian shepherd. Unfortunately, Libby started feeling ill with lethargy and vomiting.
🩻🩸After bloodwork and radiographs, our doctors quickly noticed there was a circular. metallic object located in her rectum. Libby swallowed a quarter! 🪙Luckily Libby was able to avoid surgery to remove the quarter, but still needed hospital care and medications.
🐾Ingestion of foreign bodies is common in dogs, especially puppies. Although some objects pass through the intestinal tract with no problem, others need surgery to remove them. Here are some common symptoms to look for if your pet ingests a foreign object: vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, decreased appetite, pain in the abdomen, etc...
If your pet swallows a foreign object please be sure to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible! #SpanishTrailVets #VetMed #NVAPets

🐾Dr. Agnes had the pleasure of meeting Annie, our new patient, a 7-year-old Labrador Retriever with recurring UTIs.
🩻During the abdominal radiographs, Dr. Agnes observed multiple stones present within Annie's bladder. For these stones to be removed, a cystotomy needed to be performed.
A cystotomy, a surgical intervention, entails making an incision in the bladder to eliminate impediments like bladder stones, clots, or tumors.
Bladder stones form when crystals combine in the bladder, coalescing into solid, rigid structures. These crystals/stones could originate from many sources such as infection or inflammation. These stones vary in size, ranging from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a small orange.
If these stones migrate into the urethra, they may block the passage of urine. Such an obstruction can severely impact your pet's health, potentially resulting in fatality if not promptly addressed.
❤Annie's bladder stones have been successfully removed and sent for analysis. Once her stone analysis returns, we will place Annie on a special diet to help prevent reoccurrences and address any underlying conditions that contributed to this ailment. Our STAH family wishes Annie the best of luck with her results! ❤#NVAPets #SpanishTrailVets #Cystotomy #BladderStones

Recently, Dr. Agnes had the opportunity to examine Alastor, a 4-year-old male feline, presenting symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, and absence of bowel movements. 🐱
Dr. Agnes began with a physical examination and felt a rope-like foreign body in the stomach and thickened intestinal loops. Following the initial evaluation, diagnostic tests including bloodwork and radiographs were conducted, revealing the presence of a foreign body. Additionally, observations of thickened intestines and irregular intestinal patterns suggested a potential obstruction. 🩸🩻
Our team initiated an exploratory surgery involving the extraction of foreign objects such as hair ties, thread, and hair from Alastor's stomach and intestines. Since string traps the intestines making it difficult for them to move properly, the intestines became “bunched up” and risked losing blood supply or tearing intestines. Several intestinal incisions had to be made to safely extract the three sets of string-like foreign bodies. This kept the intestines from being cut by the strings.
Alastor had a remarkable recovery and returned back home to his family! ❤ #SpanishTrailVets #NVAPets #FelineHealth

Our patient, Naomi, visited Dr. Lauren regarding a softball-sized, firm tumor on her left shoulder. 🫣 The tumor had noticeably expanded over the last four months and exhibited a slight discharge. Regrettably, due to the absence of an e-collar, Naomi managed to access the tumor and began to gnaw at it, necessitating its surgical removal. Following the extraction, Dr. Lauren dispatched the tumor for a biopsy.
We extend our best wishes to Naomi for a positive outcome from the biopsy results❤️ #SpanishTrailVets #NVAPets
