We’re moving more Louisiana Evergreen Shallots from a kinda marginal outdoor bed into the hoop house where they’ll be happier over the winter. We’ve been harvesting just the tops as green onions. Also known as “multiplying onions”, the bulbs have been reproducing and regrowing the tops every couple weeks. We’re also growing our regular scallions but these have been more productive for us so far this season and we love the flavor. It remains to be seen if we’ll be able to harvest the shallot bulbs at any point. Anyone else tried these before?

Taking down sorghum sudan grass cover crop with a brush cutter. Our mower bit the dust this summer and we’ve been making do while we wait for insurance. This is slow but does a thorough job.
The little mower that could (kinda) - taking down the cover crops on the market garden beds that are too close together for the tractor. 🚜🌱
We had a 2000lb super sac of organic fertilizer that needed to go in this new field before we do another cover crop seeding. The plan was to use the cone spreader on the tractor but then the tractor broke and is in the shop and it rained and rained and the field is too wet for a tractor anyway. So we did it by hand this morning. Here’s Cheryl flinging the last bucket. Now it’s time for a nap.
Sunday morning shallot cleaning.
She’s more than just a farmer.
Bringing back the broad fork!
After 2 years of avoiding this tool, we decided our beds need a little oxygen. We’re turning over tons of beds these days, so the broad forks are getting a lot of use. And we’re getting a workout!
Carrots love a freeze, and Cheryl loves a carrot.
Yesterday’s 80 degree temps caused the sprouting broccoli to flower super fast. Luckily the flowers taste delicious, to us and to the bees! We’ll have lots of broccoli for farm shares and veggies boxes on Tuesday.
