Chicken and Duck Alert! 🐓🍗

We just added chicken and duck to our online shop. Whole chickens and parts and whole ducks are now available - preorder by Monday night, pick up on Tuesday evening at Press St Gardens during our farm share. You don’t need to order a farm share to get the meat - but you can!

Kelly from Yardbirds is an experienced poultry farmer who’s raising meat birds at our farm in New Orleans. Pekin ducks and Freedom Ranger chickens are all pasture-raised using regenerative methods. They’re tender, high in omega-3s and low in saturated fat.

Greetings from muddy New Orleans, where Mardi Gras is in full swing (thanks for the delicious king cake !) and lots of food is being harvested for our Farm Share.

While we celebrate the carnival season and enjoy the incredible food and community that this town has to offer, we also want to highlight the impacts of the disastrous federal cuts on farms here and around the country.

Along with thousands of other farms and food system nonprofits, we have experienced the funding freeze in which the USDA is not paying out its contracts. Many of these funds were reimbursable grants, for which we and others have already spent the money on green infrastructure (see those solar panels on the barn? The USDA owes us $18K for those), beginning farmer development programs, and so many other critical projects that will help agriculture advance as the climate changes and local farming becomes more and more important. Farms of all sizes depend on the USDA, NRCS, and other federal agencies for funding. If the government continues to renege on its obligations, farms will shut down, and we will see a countrywide collapse in our food system.

Please contact your representatives and demand that they call on this irresponsible administration to end the freeze.

Massive planting day today.

The recent warm weather following a very cold month meant that tons of trays were ready to go all at once. Today we put 6800 plants in the ground. Tis the season. 🌱

Winter Storm Enzo impact report:

The snow has melted at the farm and while we won’t know the full impact of the unprecedented winter storm for weeks, we have some sense of what made it through unscathed and what’s totally lost. Some things are damaged but hopefully mostly salvageable and other things we just have to wait to see if they can push through.

Some scenes from around the farm, post thaw:

1) a peek under the cover at some happy lettuce,

2) mostly unhappy lettuce that didn’t get covered,

3) radicchio with damaged outer leaves but intact inner heads,

4) newly planted spring greens and onions - we’re hoping these guys will be able to push through,

5) droopy leeks that will need a lot of trimming but are still viable we think,

6) shallots and lettuce kickin’ it in a hoop house.

For the next couple weeks we’ll only be doing our Tuesday farm share pickups - we won’t be at markets this week for sure and probably not for a couple weeks at least!

Hopefully the farm will recover quickly with the warmer weather and we’ll be back to our normal production level early this spring. We appreciate all of our customers and wish we didn’t have this disruption in the middle of our market season!

This is a hard time for all the farmers in this region so please do whatever you can to support your local growing community!

We finally made it out to the farm today - not an easy trip navigating two bridges/various road closures.

It looks pretty from afar but not so great close up. Not much we can do until the snow thaws. Pretty much everything in the field is looking rough, but it’s possible some of it will recover.

Greenhouse and hoop houses are all in good shape.

We’ll know more in the coming weeks about the outlook of recovery. It will very likely be several weeks before we’re fully back up to speed.

We’ve never had this kind of cold or this much snow during the middle of our growing season here in New Orleans. It’s a bit of a shock, though we’re getting more used to expecting the unexpected.

Reminder to our farm share members!Picking up today indoors at Press St Station. 4-7!
