Summer solstice. Cover crop in the hoop houses.
This was our first week not at market since October because the farm has definitely transitioned to summer production. Weāre still picking blackberries, peppers, eggplants, and okra, but a lot is slowing down and weāre switching our focus to building good soil for next season.
We harvested the last of our carrots today!
Total carrot yield for this season: 10,635lbs. Thatās the most weāve grown yet and we look forward to beating it next year!
Big berries poppinā, pickinā aināt stoppingā!
(Except for Reva whose last day for the season is tomorrow š)
Pretty stoked about pepper season. These are a couple varieties of sweet peppers + shish*tos. Hot peppers are starting up too. š„
All the colors at today! Including blackberry.
I hope youāre not tired of blackberry content yet, cause itās still cominā at you!!
Reva for the berry toss win.
Blackberry season is in full swing!
These delicious berries are grown organically, as is everything else on our farm. And unlike most certified Organic berries that you can buy at the supermarket, these are grown in soil, not hydroponically or in substrate containers.
Weāre selling our berries through our Farm Share on Tuesday and at the Thursday farmers market in Midcity. Itās a great time of year for local fruits and veggies, so get yourself a Veggie Box through our GrownBy page (link in profile) or get out to the .
And jammers, bakers, winemakers(?) and other big time berry lovers, hit us up if youāre looking for bulk quantities (5 # or more).
The moment weāve been waiting for! Our first blackberry harvest with enough berries to bring to the Farm Share! šš¾
Limited quantities, fresh picked today, mostly sweet with a little tart and juicy. They good.
Big hauls from the farm. Greens, peppers, eggplants, squash, cukes, basil, lettuce, and about a millions other things are rolling in right now. Farm Share will be another stunner next week. Veggie Boxes at the link!
Imani has been doing a work trade at the farm this spring and today was her last day. Sheās getting ready to relocate her own farm from the north shore to a spot just around the corner from us and will hopefully be growing her own veggies again this fall. Itās been great getting to know a West Bank neighbor who also loves growing food and feeding her community and doesnāt mind spending all morning pulling weeds š.
Weāre looking forward to keeping tabs on her farming journey (and you can too ) and are very grateful that she shared time with us these last few months.
Cover crop with Penny photobomb.
Last season we broadcast our cover crop seed in this field and with the drought the germination was terrible. We used the Earthway seeder for this section last week. Took a while to make all those passes but it did the job š±š±š±
Got Cucumbers? š„
Itās peak veg season right now. Veggie Boxes and Farm Shares are available. Visit our website to find out more and place an order. Just four weeks left!
Harvested some onions today. They did better than we expected!š§ š§
Peak veggie season is just approaching fast and we want to make sure everyone can get in on the action! We added more Farm Shares for the last 5 weeks of the season and have lots of one-time Veggie Boxes available too.
Leafy greens, salad mixes, root veggies, onions, cukes and zukes, eggplants, peppers, okra, basil - itās all happening in the last few weeks of the spring season.
Get it while the getting is green!
Bok choy made it in right before the storm arrived.
Despite the wild weather this morning, we are looking at the best Farm Share of the season so far with arugula finally, the first cukes and zukes, beautiful bok choy and lettuce and lots of other good stuff. (A couple Farm Share veggie boxes are still available to order by midnight tonight (see profile).)
And weāre looking forward to having a great spread at market on Thurs too. Which unfortunately is on Rolling Stones day. If you have it in you to brave coming out to Midcity Thursday afternoon, we and all the other vendors who work so hard to bring all the goods to market would really appreciate it. The food still grows even during Jazz Fest. Thanks for keeping it local!
Itās Jazz Fest at the Fairgrounds but itās Fennel Fest over here at
Come by the Greenway before 7.
New plastic-free microgreens packaging! What do yāall think?!
Find em at the today.
Carrots are always in fashion here. We hand wash all of them right now (which is very time consuming!), but we just submitted a USDA grant application to pay for a rinse conveyor which would be a complete game changer. š¤
We had a great Cover Crop Field Day on Wednesday. We talked seeding sunn h**p and other cover crops, and showed off the rental no-till drill (which subsequently broke and took 5+ hours to repair).
Thanks to everyone who came out for the Field Day and for folks who came out for the concurrent In-District meeting with Senator Bill Cassidyās office who got to hear about the great things happening with urban agriculture in the state.
Thanks also to our great crew for making everything run as smoothly as possible!
Hot pups and hot peps and okra, all hanging out in the crimped sunn h**p from last fall. Weāre still getting some mulch coverage from the old sunn h**p stalks.
Weāll be hosting a field day next Wednesday to talk about our sunn h**p experiment, which is funded through a SARE grant. Anyone interested in hearing about cover crops and this particular project is welcome to join. Deets in pic 3, RSVP at link in profile.
Butter lettuce! Itās big, itās beautiful, itās coming to market today!
at the Greenway, 3-7pm (daylight savings hours are back)
Rain or shine!
First peppers filling in the sweet pepper house!
Weāve never had great success with sweet peppers but are always trying different varieties to hopefully find some that can withstand the grueling summers in SE Louisiana. These are Carmen and Ninja.š¤š¶ļø
These beets š¤©
Get a Veggie Box on Tuesday and join us as we celebrate and honor the last of these glorious leeks. Weāve all oohed and ahhed over them for months. Itās time to bid them adieu, until next year. šš
Veggie Boxes can be ordered via our website. Pickup Tuesday evening at Press Street Gardens.
Potatoes by the foot.
Planted 900ā of three different potato varieties. Literally cannot wait for them to be ready.
First time pulling carrots for the niece and nephew, (other than in āUntitled Goose Gameā, which apparently is a video game involving stealing stuff from a farmer š©āš¾) š„š„
Whoa what a week. Hope everyoneās had a very happy and safe Mardi Gras. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
Hey party people! Weāre coming to market today. Get there before the parade and have a freakinā happy carnival!

We had a 2000lb super sac of organic fertilizer that needed to go in this new field before we do another cover crop seeding. The plan was to use the cone spreader on the tractor but then the tractor broke and is in the shop and it rained and rained and the field is too wet for a tractor anyway. So we did it by hand this morning. Hereās Cheryl flinging the last bucket. Now itās time for a nap.
Bringing back the broad fork! After 2 years of avoiding this tool, we decided our beds need a little oxygen. Weāre turning over tons of beds these days, so the broad forks are getting a lot of use. And weāre getting a workout!
Yesterdayās 80 degree temps caused the sprouting broccoli to flower super fast. Luckily the flowers taste delicious, to us and to the bees! Weāll have lots of broccoli for farm shares and veggies boxes on Tuesday.
@romeenterprise has the special touch with the bucket loader. Covering the front block with bagasse to hopefully raise the elevation of the beds for better drainage next season.
This weekās farm share was the first of the fall season with 100% offerings from our farm in New Orleans. Another great Farm Share coming up next Tuesday. Check out our website riverqueengreens.com to learn about our Tuesday evening veggie pickups at Press Street Gardens in the Bywater. #csa #farmshare #eatlocalnola #certifiednaturallygrown
Baby lettuce going in the ground on Kentucky street with the paperpot transplanter. Takes much less time planting and uses less space in the field and greenhouse. Not saying itās a must-have, but itās a pretty nifty tool for the right conditions. #paperpottransplanter #paperpot #marketgarden #certifiednaturallygrown #babylettuce #easyleaf
We took the big and scary step of discāing our main West Bank growing area today in order to reorient the beds. Weāre going to try orienting them to run front to back instead of side to side. Itās a little counterintuitive given the location of the existing ditches, but we hope it will address some of the issues affecting our drainage, and it will allow us to use a tractor in field. This is a loaner tractor, borrowed from our neighbor, so itās kind of weird timing to switch to tractor-based when we donāt have a tractor. The soil is really nice because weāve been adding tons of compost over the last few seasons. With a few more inputs and some additional strategizing, weāre hoping it will be a big improvement! š¤š¤ #discharrow #kubotatractor #bumpyride

We were lucky enough to set up our farm next to the talented artist Rebeka Skela's house. Last month she painted a 95' long mural on one of our walls. It was so cool to watch it take form over a couple of weeks and the art is awesome! The complete time lapse video is on our website. There's so much going on in this piece though that you really should come see it for yourself. @sanguineskills Also the badass artist @hugogyrl is finishing the lot's other wall, so stay tuned! #farmart #murals #urbanfarmnola #urbanagriculture
