We’ve all heard the phrase, “one in a million”, and it’s used quite often to describe all kinds of different things, including a pet. It is truly the definition of someone or something very special, rare or unusual. Fourteen years ago, we received a phone call from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter begging for our help with a dog they had found. What they described to us about the dog’s facial appearance was nothing short of horrific and unimaginable! Of course, we told them to get the dog to us as soon as possible, so our team of veterinarians could assess her and see what could be done to save her. Within 30 minutes, the poor baby arrived, and we had never seen anything, the likes of what was going on with her face, or lack of a face. You see, she had been used as a bait dog, and wandered up onto someone’s porch looking for help. There was nothing left of her mouth and nose, and her teeth were all exposed. Over the next few days and weeks, she would undergo extensive plastic surgery to put her face back together and make her look like a dog again.
We named her Barbie, and right then and there she became a one in a million dog. Not only had she survived the most horrific attack, abuse and neglect, she was one of the most resilient, grateful and loving dogs we had ever rescued. Barbie loved every human she met, and didn’t hold any resentment toward any dogs, ever. In fact, she was often referred to as a nanny and mother hen, for the way she took care of other dogs, She was so trusting, and each day we had her, the love we had for her grew and grew.
Her health journey didn’t end with her face, as she was also suffering from heartworm disease. This was the result of years of neglect and no one ever taking care of her. She had never been treated like a member of anyone’s family, and we all knew that was going to change once we found her the perfect, forever home.
She was finally cleared of heartworms, spayed, and was ready to leave our nest and spread her wings with someone new. That’s where Sam Steinmetz came in. Sam had seen her post on our social media, and had a lot of experience with the breed and felt that he could offer Barbie the best foster home until a permanent one was found.
Several months after her horrific ordeal had started, she was nominated to be Queen of Barkus and on the day of her Royal reign, with news cameras rolling, Sam announced that he would be giving Barbie her forever home. Our tears of joy flowed as hard as the rain that was coming down that day!
Our special one in a million girl had finally found her forever home! She would never want for anything, and never have to worry that she would be discarded again. This was truly the best home any dog could have ever asked for.
Over the years, Barbie gained some siblings, and some siblings passed over the rainbow bridge, but one thing remained constant, Sam and Barbie‘s beautiful relationship of undying love. We can honestly say we have never seen a relationship between a human and a dog quite like theirs.
That is why this post is so hard to make, and one that we have dreaded for some time. Several weeks ago, Barbie was diagnosed with lymphoma that had spread into her back leg causing her an extreme amount of pain. Sam knew the day had come, and after all the wonderful years of friendship and loyalty she had given him, it was time to say goodbye to his Queen.
With all of us by their side, Barbie and Sam said their last goodbyes. Although we have all been through this before, and have had to say goodbye to our furry friends to send them over the rainbow bridge, it never gets easier.
Our hearts are broken, as is Sam’s. We’ll see you again one day sweet girl. Make sure you share all your Kongs with the other dogs. We will never forget you and will always love you💔🌈
