Don't worry, it's just a drill! As a zoo accredited by The Association of Zoos and Aquariums, we are required to conduct six safety drills a year. These drills take place while we are closed to the public as we drill what might happen if an animal is out of their habitat.

This drill involved simulating an animal escape scenario with one of our female American black bears. These drills are essential to practice our skills and response times to potential incidents. As you can see, our staff member may be having too much fun in an animal onesie...

We do these drills in cooperation with New Orleans Emergency Medical Services and New Orleans Fire Department.

We took April Dupré and Love Nola TV on a Jammin' with Jaguars Wild Encounter! 🐾 😻

They ventured behind-the-scenes in Jaguar Jungle, meet Reina, and had the opportunity to feed her. Not only are these Wild Encounters a personal way to meet some amazing animals and learn from their keepers, it also supports Audubon Zoo’s wildlife conservation efforts.

We are devastated to announce the passing of our female capybara, Brain. At the advanced age of almost 14 years old, Brain was humanely euthanized due to an age-related decline in health. The average lifespan of a capybara is 8-10 years old. She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving keepers and vet team.

Brain called Audubon Zoo home for the majority of her life, coming here when she was only 8 months old. She was described by her care team as a sassy, larger than life animal, who was the “boss” of the South America yard. Brain was smart and stubborn and won the heart of everyone who worked with her. She enjoyed lounging in the lagoon, rolling in mud, and in her older age, a good chin scratch from her keepers. She impacted the lives of many guests by serving as an ambassador for her species.

Capybaras will return to Audubon Zoo when the Jaguar Jungle renovations are completed in Spring 2025.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Matthew, our male red river hog. Matthew's care team determined that he was experiencing a decline in quality of life with no hope for improvement, considering his advanced age (18 years old). To prevent him from suffering, animal care and veterinary staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize Matthew.

Matthew arrived at Audubon Zoo from Denver Zoo in 2008, accompanied by his sister Isabel. They lived together until Isabel's passing a few years ago. Nessie and Morticia, two current females, were introduced to keep him company, recognizing the social nature of their species. Within the AZA population of approximately 150 red river hogs, Matthew stood out as the eldest living hog. The typical lifespan of a red river hog in AZA-accredited facilities is around 15 years.

According to his care team, Matthew was an absolute joy. He eagerly awaited at the door, ever ready to greet the team with an infectious warmth. His greatest delights included peanuts, belly rubs, and oatmeal raisin balls. His training sessions with his care team were filled with continuous affection and scratches. Matthew's days were spent exploring, relaxing in his wallows, enjoying quick swims in the pool, enthusiastically chasing scattered produce, inspecting everyone's grain bowl for the best bits, and indulging in long, peaceful naps.

Please join us in sharing our condolences with our Africa care team, who said goodbye to a dear friend.

Exciting new changes are underway at the Zoo’s popular Jaguar Jungle exhibit and part of the well-traveled walkway is closing while work is done in the area.

Starting this week, the boardwalk path through the South American pampas will close to make way for an expansion of the Zoo’s spider monkey habitat and improvements to that part of Audubon Zoo. Some of the animals that lived in that area have been relocated to other exhibits at the Zoo, a few will move to Audubon Species Survival Center while the construction is underway.

Guests will still be able to enjoy the majority of Jaguar Jungle, which opened in 1998. Jaguar Jungle's path ends at the Zoo’s popular Nocturnal House and alpaca yard.

The renovated space in Jaguar Jungle’s South American yard includes enlarging the spider monkey yard to give them more room and climbing space, a lagoon and a new boardwalk leading to an island with an interactive boat. Animals native to South America will move into the upgraded space, including capybara, tapirs, rhea, peccary and anteaters. Construction is expected to be completed by Spring 2025.

Meet Hazel, our adorable year and a half old opossum! 🥰

Hazel is training to be an ambassador animal, where she'll start coming out and meeting Zoo guests. Hazel will be educating people about the importance of local wildlife and also dispelling myths about opossums, who are actually very beneficial animals to have around.

Hazel eats a lot of different things, but some of her favorite foods are wax worms, boiled egg, grapes, and cooked sweet potato!

Introducing the newest addition to our colobus monkey family - Casper! Casper was born on October 5 to the proud second-time parents Habari (Mom) and Kijani (Dad) as part as our participation in the Colobus Species Survival Plan (SSP).

Colobus babies are born all white to ensure that they can be seen against Mom's black fur to promote alloparenting, which is when all females of the troop take turns holding and caring for him.

Since colobus babies are born all white and he was born in October, it was the perfect opportunity to name him after Casper the friendly ghost. Stop by World of Primates on your next visit to catch a glimpse of Casper!

Now through Jan. 13, donate your broken or used holiday lights at the Zoo's front gate to support our Lights for Lions conservation campaign! 🦁 ♻️ 💡

Most holiday lights are not bio-degradable and are dangerous to animals if they get tangled in the strands. You can take action and make a positive impact on the natural world by recycling your lights and keeping them from going to a landfill. Please do not add bags or boxes in the recycle box - only string lights!

All proceeds from our Lights for Lions campaign benefit our conservation partner Lion Recovery Fund.

Happy Orangutan Caring Week! This week was created to draw attention to the challenges faced by the critically endangered orangutans and their rainforest home. Here at Audubon Zoo, we have seven Sumatran orangutans Jambi, Feliz, Menari, Reese, Bulan, Madu, and Roux. 🦧

In the wild, Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered and are mainly threatened by habitat loss due to logging, forest fires, timber clearing for agriculture (including palm oil plantations) and human settlements. One way you can help save this incredible species is by making a conscious decision to consume only sustainably sourced palm oil. Orangutan SSP has great resources on how you can help: bit.ly/32IHEYH

Our male jaguar Valerio underwent a necessary dental procedure recently - a root canal! 🐾 🦷

This vital care was handled by Audubon Zoo's Veterinary staff, Animal Care staff, and led by Dr. Erin Ribka, a board-certified veterinary dentist from Gulf South Veterinary Dental Specialties. We are very happy to report that Valerio's procedure went great! His dental work was a success and during his exam, we also completed a routine physical examination.

Thanks to the vigilance of our animal staff, and collaborations with specialists like Dr. Ribka, we're able to ensure animals receive the best care, no matter how big or small.

Are you ready for the most boopable nose ever!? 👆 😍

An adorable baby prehensile-tailed porcupine - called a porcupette was born at the Zoo on October 15th! This is the fifth infant of Jasmine (Mom) and Quill (Dad) as part of The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan. A porcupette is born with soft quills that protect the mom during the birthing process. As the porcupette grows, hard quills become more visible when their hair sheds.

You can see this sharp family in Nocturnal House. Due to their small size, it takes a few months for the s*x of a porcupette to be determined.

Audubon Zoo is mourning the loss of one its beloved long-term residents. Sarge, our blue and gold macaw, who has been at Audubon Zoo since 1981 passed away on Sunday, October 29.

Sarge was one of our Zoo ambassador animals and he was estimated to be over 45 years old. Adult blue and gold macaws typically live between 30 and 35 years in the wild. When pets are cared for at Zoos, these birds can live upwards of 50 years. We are comforted in knowing that Sarge lived a long and full life. For more than 4 decades, he helped us to engage and inspire guests of Audubon Zoo to care for and protect the natural world.

Sarge had a HUGE and silly personality. He was known for dancing with his keepers, loved to learn and play with the other birds and with his keepers, and among many other phrases he would always greet keepers with a “Hi, Sarge!” and “Buh bye!” We are so grateful to Sarge for the incredible impact he made on all of us and all the people he met over the years. We will miss Sarge dearly.
