APRIL 2022 NEWSLETTER:

TEN SIGNS YOUR DOG IS STRESSED

There are certain things all responsible dog owners should know, including how to groom them, basic training, and proper feeding. Another important one is being in tune with your dogā€™s body language and behaviors to be able to recognize when somethingā€™s not right, so you can get them the care or relief they need as soon as possible.

Stress can be caused by a number of reasons, such as a medical issue, changes in the environment, or perceived threats. Here are the common signs of stress in dogs.

SIMPLE BODY LANGUAGE CUES:

Ears back: Dogs are very expressive with their facial cues. When they pin their ears back against their head, it is a sign of unease.

Tucked tail: A tail tucked between the legs can be a sign of fear, anxiety, or aggression.

Hiding: Especially if your dog is newly adopted, seeking a safe place to hide is a common behavior for a stressed or anxious pup. If your dog is usually relaxed and comfortable and you notice he has gone into hiding, itā€™s likely due to stress. (Did someone say ā€œbath timeā€?)
dog with destroyed toy.

RREACTIONS AND RESPONSES:

Yawning: When a dog is in an awkward or uncomfortable situation, they may yawn as a way of distracting themselves from the discomfort in an effort to alleviate these feelings. If you see yawning and you know your dog isnā€™t sleepy, itā€™s likely that heā€™s feeling a little uncomfortable.

Excessive drooling, panting: In the same way humans can get flushed, hot and sweaty during stressful situations, dogs can also experience a rise in body temperature caused by stress. You might see panting and possibly extra drooling.

Excessive shedding: If your dog is fearful of vet visits, you may have noticed extra shedding at your annual appointments.

Destructive behavior: Highly stressed dogs, such as those experiencing separation anxiety while home alone, may engage in destructive behaviors like scratching at the door, digging at the carpet, or chewing on furniture (or even their own paws).

Aggression: Rather than hiding, some dogs react to stressful situations (like going to the vet or groomer) with aggressive behaviors. This can include growling, snarling, and snapping.

Accidents in the house: For a dog that has been reliably potty trained, accidents in the house are signs of either being left home too long without a potty break, a medical condition, or stress.

Tummy troubles: Stressful situations can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. However, donā€™t always assume these problems are due to stress because they are often signs of other medical issues as well.

RELIEVING YOUR DOGS STRESS:

Whatā€™s stressing your dog may be obvious, such as fireworks or loud neighbors, going to the vet, or riding in the car. If you know what is stressing your dog, try your best to make him as comfortable as you can by reducing/removing the stressor or creating a safe space.

If youā€™re not sure what is causing your dog to be stressed, itā€™s a good idea to see your veterinarian as soon as you can, in case of an underlying medical condition. Your vet may also have good advice on how to alleviate your dogā€™s stress, such as medication for specific situations like the Fourth of July.

Being able to recognize signs of stress will help you quickly relieve your dogā€™s discomfort as soon as possible.

PAW TALK

REVERSE SNEEZE IN DOGS

Reverse sneezing is a common phenomenon in dogs, especially those with short snouts and flat faces, but it can prompt panic in inexperienced pet parents.
Key Takeaways:
Reverse sneezing is a quirky, yet harmless, behavior that all sizes and breeds of dogs commonly do.
A reverse sneeze sounds like a snort as the dog inhales, and it can last from a few seconds to minutes.
Airborne allergens like pollen and perfume, as well as ci******es and ma*****na, can cause a dog to reverse sneeze.
Most reverse sneezing in dogs requires no treatment.
To make it stop, you can massage your dog's throat to stop the spasm, or very briefly over your pupā€™s nostrils with a hand (triggering a swallow reflex that usually makes the sneeze end).

Safe Outdoor Temperatures for Dogs

While it seems like dogs may react differently to the weather than humans (they have different biology after all), they can actually be more susceptible to weather extremes in some cases. A general rule of thumb to use is, If the outdoor temperature is too hot or cold for a human to be comfortable, itā€™s too severe for your dog. Hot temperatures, combined with humidity, can cause dehydration and heatstroke. Temperatures lower than 32 degrees Fahrenheit can cause hypothermia or frostbite.
Winter Weather Concerns
How cold is too cold for a dog to be outside? Unfortunately, the answer isnā€™t quite straightforward because each dog is unique. Factors that affect their temperature tolerance include:
1. Coat type: It goes without saying that dogs with thicker, fluffier coats and those with double coats can withstand colder temperatures than those with thin, single coats of fur.
2. Size: Small dogs can get colder much more quickly than larger dogs.
3. Weight: Body fat can help insulate from cold temperatures, so a dog with less body fat will suffer from cold temperatures more quickly. However, itā€™s important to keep your dog at a healthy body weight because the risks that come with being overweight are certainly not worth forgoing the purchase of a sweater for your pup.
4. Age: Older dogs and those with compromised health can be more susceptible to cold temperatures than their younger, healthier counterparts.
As a rule of thumb, small dogs with short coats, such as Chihuahuas, get cold faster than other breeds. Provide your dog with a sweater during winter walks and keep his outdoor time short. Other breeds, such as poodles, are susceptible to cold if their coats are groomed short.
What cold temperatures are safe for dogs?
In general, most dogs are okay until the temperature drops to below 45Ā°F, according to PetMD. Below that, some dogs may begin to feel uncomfortable. Below freezing, 32Ā°F, dogs in sensitive categories, such as older dogs and those with thin coats will need extra help, such as shelter (staying inside) or a jacket or sweater. Temperatures below 20Ā°F are not safe for any dog to spend significant amounts of time outside due to the risks of hypothermia and frostbite.
Playing outside in the cold
Some dogs prefer to play and enjoy the outdoors, regardless of the weather. If you leave your dog outside when itā€™s cold, provide him with shelter to protect him from severe weather. A dog house that has a solid, raised floor with straw or bedding for insulation will help keep him warm. Cover the entrance with a flap to keep drafts out.
Dogs in cold temperatures need plenty of food; staying warm uses up extra energy. Make sure that water is available and that itā€™s not frozen.
During cold winter months, walk your dog during the warmest hours of the day. Make sure that his paws are protected from ice, which can cause frostbite and cut the pads. Even breeds that are more tolerant to cold should not be left outdoors for long periods of time in below-freezing temperatures.
Summer Weather Concerns
Safe summer temperatures vary depending on humidity levels. For instance, a dog left outdoors in an arid climate may be fine in temperatures of 85 degrees, provided he has access to shade and water. However, a dog in a high-humidity climate at the same temperature might be in danger for heatstroke.
Allow your dog to play outdoors as long as you can join him comfortably. Make sure he has plenty of cold, fresh water and access to shade. On extreme heat days, walk your dog in the early morning or late evening, when temperatures cool off. Place your hand on the sidewalk first to ensure that itā€™s not hot enough to burn the sensitive pads on your dogā€™s feet.
Never leave your dog in the car during warm weather. The Humane Society notes that on an 85-degree day, a car with its windows partially rolled down reaches 102 degrees in only 10 minutes.
Breed-specific hot temperature concerns
While most dogs will be comfortable in the same temperatures as their humans, some breeds are more susceptible than others.
Dogs with short snouts, such as pugs, are more at risk for heatstroke than others because the hot air enters their lungs more quickly than dogs with longer snouts. Dogs with thick coats, such as huskies, overheat more easily than those with short coats, especially if they havenā€™t acclimated to a warm climate.
Danger Signs
Keep a close eye on your dog during very hot or very cold weather. Seek veterinary treatment if his symptoms indicate a weather-related condition.
In cold weather, watch for symptoms of hypothermia:
1. Shivering
2. Slow breathing
3. Lethargy
4. Fixed pupils
5. Muscle stiffness
6. Coma
Hypothermia can cause death. If you suspect your dog is suffering from this condition, move him out of the cold and seek immediate veterinary attention.
In hot weather, watch for symptoms of dehydration and heatstroke:
1. Panting
2. Drooling
3. Rapid heart rate
4. Vomiting blood
5. Disorientation
6. Muscle tremors
7. Unconsciousness
If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, spray him with water or cover him in water-soaked towels to cool him off. Provide him cool water and encourage, but donā€™t force him, to drink. Move him indoors or to a shady area. Seek veterinary care.
