Hurricane Francine is coming today - here's what you need to know about pets.
🐾 Bring pets inside for duration of weather event and any residual weather effects
🐶 If you let your pet outside for a potty break, stay outside with them while they take care of business
🚨Our humane law officers are responding to emergencies only (reported through 911), weather permitting. If wind or rain conditions become too serious, our officers will pause responding to calls and resume as soon as possible

Our campuses are closed to the public until Friday, but we have a team onsite to take care of our shelter animals.

With Francine headed our way, y'all showed up for us! We have put over 100 animal in foster care, secured the remaining animals in our building, and made sure our buildings are ready for the weather.

Both our New Orleans and Plaquemines Parish campuses will be closed to the public on Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12. This includes Community Clinic, Adoptions, owner surrenders, stray drop offs, and food pantry.

Call 911 to report an animal emergency during the weather event. Our officers will be responding to emergencies only from here on, weather permitting.

We are so incredibly thankful for the overwhelming amount of support today for fostering animals through the storm! We now have over 100 animals in foster care! These animals are safe and loved for the duration of the storm and we are in awe of y’all ❤️

UPDATE: No more fosters needed at this time! Our team is working hard to get the animals in our care into temporary homes and our lobbies are completely packed. We truly cannot thank our community enough for the overwhelming support in the animal's time of need ❤️

EMERGENCY ⚠️ Temporary foster homes needed for Hurricane Francine! We have almost 400 animals in our care. If you can help, please stop by our Orleans or Plaquemines Campus anytime today to see who you can take home and our teams will assist you! All supplies the animal will need will be given to you, so there's no cost to you besides opening your home and heart to an animal temporarily.

If you can't foster, please consider donating or helping us spread the word. The pets in our care don't deserve to be scared and feeling alone during extreme weather.

We are working to secure the animals and our campuses ahead of Tropical Storm Francine, but we want to make sure y'all are thinking about your pets too!

When you're at the grocery store this evening:
🌀 make sure your pet has enough food for at least a week
🌀 include them in the amount of water you are buying
🌀 have their prescriptions filled if they rely on medicine

Please remember to bring all pets inside before the tropical storm makes landfall and to include your pet in all your plans, whether you are evacuating or sheltering in place.

🌟Foster Friday is here!🌟Meet Mae! Her foster mom has been having the best time getting to know her and according to mom, Mae is truly the perfect dog. She is so engaged with her people and eager to please them. She's affectionate, loving, and is convinced that she's a lap dog! Mae loves every person and dog that she's been introduced to. She loves to play with other dogs, but moderates her play for smaller and older dogs very well. Mae is also extremely well behaved, and if she does do anything incorrectly she immediately corrects herself upon being told "No". She's great on a leash and even runs well next to her person. She'd do great in an active home, but any home with love and affection to give her will make her happy ❤

Carnival is the perfect event to give you and your pet something to celebrate, together! In addition to our human ticket options, we have a $15 Pooch Pass just for your dog. Our pet area will feature dog games, treats and a pet psychic (you know you've always wanted to know what they were thinking.)

Y'all thought we forgot about our feline friends? 🐈‍⬛ Just because we are out of space for dogs, doesn't mean we don't have cats looking for homes too - 63 to be exact!

The cool thing about cats is that you don't even have to come to us to adopt. You can head to your closest PetSmart store, and we have a few hanging out looking for homes there!

Happy Tails are here again! Ihop's journey with us was a long one, but after 7 months he was thrilled to find his forever home. His foster parent fell in love and couldn't let him go ❤.

Here's what they had to say: "He has gained some healthy weight and is absolute angel. He’s full of energy and full of life. I’m forever thankful for laspca for I have found my best friend and one of the loves in my life. I was going through a rough patch and having I hop around changed my life drastically for the better."

🐾This week's Foster Friday goes out to sweet Arabella. 🐾 This gorgeous girl is only 1 year old and LOVES to play and chase toys. When she's done with her daily cardio Arabella enjoys a good lounge session. She loves to be loved and will roll on her belly for some head and chest rubs anytime. This golden-eyed girl is low maintenance and independent, but she loves snoozing next to you. Arabella is FIV positive, so it's better if she's a solo cat or with another FIV cat. Yeobright, the alligator survivor, is looking for a forever home! This brave girl came to us with a few 'souvenirs' from her encounter with a local reptile. 🐊

Last week one of our officers were dispatched to a call from a concerned resident who saw a brown dog standing in a canal. She was seemingly frozen, and refused to swim or move. Upon closer inspection, there was an alligator in the same canal, just a few feet away! Springing into action, the concerned resident became her hero and carried her out of the water. When our officer arrived, they were both coming out of the water, and immediately checked on them both. Thankfully, the kind human was not injured but Yeobright was not so lucky and was bitten on her leg by the gator.

Despite her ordeal, Yeobright's spirit is as bright as her name. She's the sweetest girl you'll ever meet, but please, for the love of all things holy, keep her away from water and any scaly friends. We think she's had enough adventures for one lifetime.

Y'all always ask if we have French Bulldogs, so we know you want to see Bilbo (his name is also Grunt) who we think is a French Bulldog mix 🐕

He's around 3 months old and he already knows to sit, stay, off and walks well on a leash! He is a sweetie, loves to cuddle, play with toys and other dogs. He sometimes sits a little weirdly (see photo), but we think he's the cutest! If you are interested in meeting him, let us know. He's currently in foster care, but we can set up meet and greets at the closest PetSmart near you ❤

With extreme heat warnings in the forecast for the next few days, it's important to take precautions to keep our furry friends safe and cool! Today there is an Excessive Heat Warning in effect until 6pm, which means companion animals should not be left alone outside for extended periods of time.

- 💧: Make sure there is always plenty of cool water available for your pets. Keep multiple water bowls around the house and refresh them often.
- 🍀: Avoid walking your dog on hot surfaces. These surfaces can get very hot and can burn your pet's paws. Instead, opt for walking on grass or dirt paths.
- 🏖: If you are spending time outside with your pet, make sure they have access to shade. This will help them stay cool and avoid overheating.
- 🚗: NEVER leave your pet in the car. Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can quickly rise to dangerous levels and can lead to heatstroke.
- ⚠️: Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, weakness, lethargy, dark red gums, drooling, and rapid heartbeat. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, seek veterinary care immediately.

By taking these precautions, you can help prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which can be life-threatening. Stay safe and cool during these hot summer days!

🐾 Happy Tails are here again! 🐾 We are over the moon 🌙 with this update from Ruby Milan's former foster mom:

"I had the pleasure of getting to babysit my old foster, Milan (who has been renamed Ruby, with Milan kept as her middle name) this weekend and WOW!!! She’s come so far in every single way since I first met her!

When I picked her up to foster back in early April, she was under 36lbs, had pneumonia, and was so timid she was almost transported to a rescue that works with extremely timid and shy dogs. She grew so much with me in the 3 months I fostered her, both mentally and physically, and she’s continued to excel beautifully with her adopter over the last month! She’s well over 50lbs now, gets home-cooked salmon for dinner every night along with plenty of peanut butter treats, has numerous furry friends in her new apartment, and absolutely LOVES her forever human❤️!
The last photo in this post is from the first day I got her, and it’s so incredible to compare that picture to current ones. She’s as big, happy, and cuddly as ever! As a first time foster, I couldn’t be happier with the way things have turned out for her!"

This Foster Friday we want to give a shout out to all of our wonderful foster parents. We are so grateful for their dedication and opening their hearts and homes to our shelter animals. With their help, our animals get a safe place to heal, get socialized, and become the best version of themselves.

Becoming an LASPCA foster parent is easy and we have a variety of scenarios to fit your comfort level, schedule, and environment. Fostering doesn't always have to be a long-term commitment. Whether it's a day, a weekend, a week, or more, anytime out of the shelter is beneficial for our canine and feline friends. And, we provide all of the supplies and support you need.
