When everything happened on Wednesday at the UNLV campus, there was a lot of uncertainty about what the rest of this week would look like. JC Neville is the owner of Cubeit Hay Co. and he, and his wife, were going to drive all the way from Hamer, ID to deliver cubes to several of the NFR qualifiers who feed his company’s cubes and watch the first performance before returning home. This was a huge help to us so we didn’t have to use our valuable trailer space for feed… we could use it for important stuff like clothes, shoes, hats, etc 😂 We talked late Wednesday afternoon and told him it looked like the first performance was going to be cancelled and we didn’t expect him to drive all the way to Las Vegas just to deliver cubes and then turn around and drive home the next day. We could find alfalfa to buy around Vegas. But, he came anyway! That’s one huge reason we partner with Cube It. Not only is it some of the best quality forage to feed our horses, it’s because we love doing business with people who know how to provide excellent customer service and who are stand out individuals. Thank you JC and Cube It for all you continue to do for all of us. We are very grateful!

And… thank you Junior Nogueira for finding some tickets for JC and his wife to stay an extra day and go to the rodeo tonight!

It's a busy week for Wendy; she will be at Honey Hill Stables on the 15th and 16th, and then off to the Battle In The Saddle this weekend! We'll be there with a full selection of barrel saddles, so come by and let us find your horse's perfect fit!

Honey Hill Stables is excited to announce it's new Brother!

Welcome to the family, Midwestern Ranch!!

As many of our followers know, Bryce underwent a shoulder surgery in January and it didn't have the outcome we were hoping for. He is not able to return to work at this time due to his weight lifting restrictions.

With his new found free time, he has organized a list of our favorite products that we use at Honey Hill Stables.

Did you know that the first frost can be dangerous to horses out on pasture?

Fall can be a beautiful time of year for horseback riding; however, frost can negatively impact horse health. Frost damaged pastures can have higher concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates, leading to an increase in the potential for founder and colic, especially in horses diagnosed with or prone to obesity, laminitis, Cushings, and Equine Metabolic Syndrome. To help prevent these health issues, wait up to a week before turning horses back onto a pasture after a killing frost. Subsequent frosts are not a concern as the pasture plants were killed during the first frost.

Why do nonstructural carbohydrates increase during the fall? During the day, plants carry out the process of photosynthesis. In this process, they make carbohydrates as an energy source for the plant. A second process, respiration, is carried out when the plants use up the carbohydrates they produce during the night for energy. Plant respiration slows down when temperatures are near freezing. As a result, the plants hold their carbohydrates overnight. Freezing can stop respiration and lock the carbohydrates in the plant for over a week. Thus, plants tend to contain more carbohydrates in colder temperatures or after a frost. Often, horses will prefer forages after a frost due to the higher carbohydrates levels.
