What a week! A recap, for family and friends:
I donโt have many fun snow photos, because frankly there was just too much to do, to stop and smell the snowfall (unless youโre a farm dog...)
We were without power for 49 hours, in temps as low as 9*. Being on wells, that also meant no water. Iโd stored the obligatory water in the bathtubs, and stored hundreds of gallons of water in barrels and buckets in the barn wash stalls, in case of power/water loss. All pipes were wrapped and drained, heat lamps were in the insulated well houses, etc. I felt prepared. Just not for such a lengthy power outage! I had a submersible water bucket heater at the ready, but with no power that was useless. But two propane crawfish boilers were put into action to thaw water and ice round the clock, and so all of the horses were kept well-hydrated throughout the ordeal!
Saturday morning at 9am, the temperature finally rose above freezing, and the great pipe thaw began. Turns out even completely wrapped pipes that are mostly drained donโt do well in those temperatures, and we had many breaks to fix. Thankfully we keep a good stockpile of PVC pipes and fittings on hand, and we were able to fix most everything. The hardware stores were black-Friday crazy, as I found out when looking for CPVC to repair hot water lines. (Stores completely bare, theyโre saying maybe Thursday...) Other than that, we just have two copper pipe breaks remaining, one in the house and one in the apartment. I was able to do a temporary fix with some rubber and some pipe clamps, but copper pipe fixing is above my abilities and pay grade. So we are on the long wait list for a proper plumber.
Big thanks to Clint and Garrett for bringing out a second crawfish pot and extra propane jugs! And to Raul for continuing to keep the horses fed on schedule and well bedded as usual, despite the cold dark conditions!
All in all, we got through it ok. So many friends have collapsed ceilings and wet floors and furniture, and are even still without water.
The sun is out, it will be 70* today, and Iโm about to head outside and get the horses back to their usual work schedule.
(Ahh, and hurricane season is just over a month away!)
