The tails of most animals are not meant to bear the weight of the animal. While this does vary, it's best to err on the side of caution.

Picking up an animal by their tail can dislocate tail bones, damage nerves and muscles, and affect their ability to control elimination amongst other problems.

In addition to potentially causing irreversible damage to the animal, you also give the animal the range of motion to potentially turn their body upwards and bite you.

Depending on the species, you can corral them into a box or kennel, toss a thick blanket over them and gently scoop them up, sweep them into an open box on it's side, or other safer alternatives.

Remember to never jeopardize your own wellbeing to rescue an animal. In addition to paying attention to your surroundings, common sense is also your best friend in situations like these.

When we know better, we can do better!

As the number of pangolins born in captivity increases it is crucial to understand the effects of captive breeding. PSG members Nick Ching-Min Sun and Flora Hsuan-Yi Lo recently conducted an analysis of over 50 wild and captive Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) births to examine various reproductive and postnatal characteristics.

The study revealed significant differences in captive-born pangolins compared to their wild counterparts. Captive-born pangolins were significantly longer and heavier at birth and exhibited weight gain at nearly double the rate. Additionally, unlike wild pangolins, captive pangolins did not adhere to seasonal mating patterns.

This research was supported by the collaboration of the Pingtung Rescue Center for Endangered Wild Animals, the Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute, and the Taipei Zoo 臺北市立動物園. To read the full article, click on the following link: https://bit.ly/3RQmF2s

We are excited to announce that the giant pangolin has been rediscovered in Senegal after a 24 year absence!

Collaborating with Panthera Senegal and their camera-trapping program in Niokolo-Koba National Park, lead authors Mouhamadou Mody Ndiaye and Marine Drouilly, PSG steering committee leader Daniel Ingram, and PSG co-chair Matthew Shirley were part of the team who recently captured this photo of a giant pangolin (Smutsia gigantea). This significant finding also documented 45 other mammal species, reaffirming the biodiversity of this West African region.

Congratulations to Panthera, who partnered with Senegal Department of National Parks to co-manage Niokolo-Koba, and to everyone involved in this discovery! To read more about the giant pangolins in Senegal, please click on the following link: https://bit.ly/3QXhcGB
