Kathy is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer in Northwest PA. Starting Canine Paws-Abilities, LLC in July 2019 because she is dedicated and passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of dogs, their owners, and her community.

All of her training is based upon the science of how dogs think, communicate and learn. She achieves this through force-free methods and positive reinforcement.

What set’s Canine Paws-Abilities’ programs apart from other programs? All our programs are held at North Memorial Animal Hospital. The veterinarian setting allows for exposure to an environment that can be associated with fear, anxiety and stress. This exposure allows for positive association with the hospital setting.

Taking a puppy to puppy class means more than just learning basic commands. In class you’ll learn how to play appropriately with your puppy, socialize your pup with other pups and humans, and work on both you and your pups patience.

Did you know that by teaching your dog how to “shake” you are teaching them a fundamental trick that you can then build upon? Once your dog has a solid shake, they will be ready to move on to slightly more complicated moves like high-five or waving hello and goodbye!

Happy Halloween Eve! With Trick or Treat approaching keep in mind that not all dogs are fans of Halloween costumes. If you are going to work with your dog during this time, remember to keep your pups at a safe distance, mark their positive behavior and give them a treat. Make sure you watch for stressors. If your pup becomes too stressed out, remove them from the situation and let them relax with their favorite blanket or toy.
Tip: Load up your favorite Kong toy tonight so you have it ready to go tomorrow. It’ll help distract your pup, while mentally stimulating them!

As the Halloween candy begins to full the bowls around your house, always keep your pets safety in mind. Anything in the candy bowl should be strictly for human trick-or-treaters. According to the ASPCA, chocolate – especially dark or baking chocolate – is harmful or deadly to dogs and cats. The artificial sweetener xylitol can also be toxic to dogs, so it’s best to keep all candy away from pets and make sure kids don’t feed their treats to pets. If your kids (or you) want your pets to share in the fun, have pet treats on hand. Many pet shops sell Halloween treats that are safe for dogs or cats. If your pet does ingest something toxic or has symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea or rapid breathing, contact your veterinarian or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Dog treats are also a great way to reward your dog to recognize it has done something right. This works for all behaviors: you have to give the treat immediately so your dog associates the action with the reward. You can encourage your dog to repeat behaviors you like, such as a sit, down, or stay!

Have you ever wondered what a martingale collar is?
Martingale collars are loose-fitting collars that slip effortlessly onto your dog’s neck. Because of its unique two-loop design, it tightens with tension and loosens once the tension releases. They are especially useful if you have a pup that has figured out how to wiggle out of their collar. And don’t worry, they are safe and gentle to your pup ❤️

Teaching your dog to wait at a door has many benefits. Not only will this behavior keep them safe by eliminating darting out a door, but they also get to work on their self control and how to be a polite pup. We’ll break down how to work on learning this behavior during Obedience class by working on duration and distractions.

Socialization is important for dogs of all ages. These guys and gals had a paws-itively awesome time during both the small dog and large dog play group. Play groups are a single, hour long class where we monitor play. $10 per session. Packages available.

Meet Diamond. She is a perfect example of Fear Free training. Diamond was adopted at about a year old. She was terrified of going to the vet, shaking, nipping and so on, to the point that she would need to be sedated for her shots. Luckily Diamond has a great Mom who has been working with us to help her. In the videos below, you will see Diamond in an exam room at the vet. She is in a great mood and she is learning that a muzzle is not something scary. She puts her head in it on her own is more than happy to accept some treats. This is a HUGE milestone for her. She is also learning to not be afraid of the table, the stethoscope and our pretend vet tech coming in the room. It isn't an overnight fix and is alot of work but well worth it.

🐾 Paws-itive Pointers 🐾Puppies and dogs sometimes have a fear of different surfaces. It can be many reasons such as texture or sound. When they are a puppy you may be tempted to pick them up and carry them over it. What happens when that puppy is an 80 lb lab that is scared to walk on your linoleum kitchen floor? In our puppy classes, we teach the puppies to explore different surfaces early on. Watch below for an example of two of our students trying different surfaces.

Socialization at an early age is an extremely important part of your dogs development. All of our Puppy classes have a set amount of time for monitored puppy play for a Paws-itive experience. Watch 2 of our puppies play below.

Paws-ative Pointers: Touch Work is a fantastic tool that can be used in many different situations and is a great distraction. For example, Fido is at the Vet and nervous. Play a game of touch to keep him occupied. Or say Rover loves going for walks but is scared of motorcycles. Play touch until the bike passes to keep him calm and occupied. Below you see Kathy teaching 14 week old Iko to “touch” on cue. Eventually you can teach your dog to touch trees, fences, shoes, just about anything!
