❄️🐾 Winter Pet Safety Tips! 🐾❄️

Winter weather can be a wonderland for us, but it’s important to keep our furry friends in mind when the temperature drops! Here are some essential tips to keep your pet safe and comfy all season long:

1️⃣ Know Your Pet’s Health: Cold weather can worsen conditions like arthritis. If your pet has joint issues, check with your vet before venturing out into the chill!

2️⃣ Bundle Up: Small dogs and short-haired pups need a little extra warmth! A cozy sweater, jacket, and even booties will keep them comfortable and happy.

3️⃣ Shorten Walks, More Often 🐾: When it’s super cold, opt for brief, frequent walks instead of long ones. It’s easier on their paws and joints!

4️⃣ Watch Out for Wind Chill 🌬️: It’s not just about the temperature! Wind chill can make it feel much colder, especially with rain or snow—stay alert!

5️⃣ Avoid Ice: Frozen lakes, ponds, and puddles can be dangerous for your pet! Always keep them away from icy waters.

Meet Dr. Riffo! 🐾

Dr. Riffo’s journey in Veterinary Medicine began in high school, where she volunteered at a local farm focused on the farm-to-table movement. She then worked as a veterinary/kennel assistant while earning her Animal Science degree at UMass. After many years of hard work and dedication, she became a veterinarian almost a year ago, turning her lifelong love for animals into a rewarding career. 🐶🐱

What Dr. Riffo loves most about her job is the chance to connect with clients and care for their furry family members. Each day presents new challenges, and she finds it incredibly rewarding to solve the health puzzles and make pets feel better. Building relationships with both animals and their owners is the most fulfilling part of her work! 💙

Fun fact: Dr. Riffo spent two weeks in Peru performing ultrasounds on alpacas to monitor herd health and pregnancies!

We're so thankful to have her as part of our team!

This condition is commonly found in brachycephalic breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers.

Dr. Winter performed this surgery to improve a dog's breathing and quality of life. 🐶🐾"

Meet Ava, one of our incredible veterinary technicians! 🐾✨

Ava has always known she wanted to work with animals. As a child, she would bandage her stuffed animals and bring home injured creatures like birds, butterflies, and mice, doing everything she could to help them heal.

Ava loves working in emergency medicine because it allows her to comfort pets and their owners during some of the most stressful moments of their lives. She enjoys collaborating with veterinarians and the rest of the team to solve medical mysteries and save lives. Ava is a true advocate for animals, ensuring their needs are understood and met since they can't speak for themselves.

Fun fact:
Ava has a passion for neonatal care and cat rescue! She works with a local rescue to raise bottle baby kittens until they’re old enough to find their forever homes. So far, Ava has cared for 16 kittens—and kept 3 of them! 🐱❤️

This month’s Doctor Spotlight is Dr. Winter! Dr. Winter grew up on a dairy farm and she was always with her cows. She showed them at the State Fair where she would often sleep with them in their barn! So, from a young age Dr. Winter had a deep love for animals and realized the only career she wanted was to be a veterinarian. And so in 2000 she reached her goal and has been a vet now for 24 years. In her 24 years, she has been here at Flannery for 23 years. She has been integral to the growth of the practice, and she is always looking to improve the care our patients receive by actively keeping up with the latest advancements in Veterinary Medicine. She provides excellent care to her patients and excellent guidance to her team here at VCA Flannery.
