Here at Ectothermic Endeavors we have a new project we are working on! And that is trying to crack the mystery behind consistent hatching of the red eyed devil katydid (Neobarrettia spinosa). These amazing katydids are predatory and feed grasshoppers, crickets, likely phasmids to an extent, and whatever other smaller insect has the misfortune of crossing paths with them. Native to the southwest and northern Mexico. Here we have one of our females and some eggs she laid. Big shout out to .redeyeddevil for posting and figuring out as much as he has! We really hope to see at least some successful hatching and with any luck be able to offer CBB nymphs of this species in the future.

So today we figured we would share some of our desert scorpion species. 1st we have the striped devil scorpion (Paravaejovis spinigerus), which is a personal favorite here at Ectothermic Endeavors as they are a small, fast, but easily maintained species. We currently have a few WC adults, a few CB and soon CBB Scorplings.

2nd we have the Dune scorpion (Smeringurus maesenensis) a slightly larger species that is absolutely gorgeous. This amazing species is also very straightforward to care for, however we have noticed they certainly like to borrow if given the opportunity.

Last but not least we have the desert hairy scorpion (Hadrurus sp.) these are by far the largest scorpion we currently offer and I only have them in very limited stock. These fellas love to burrow and they should have a deeper substrate that allows for them to do so.

If interested in any of these species please pm for a full stock list.

Interesting story with these fellas, we got these in as Macrothele sp Thai. However, as we hit the books and tried to Identify them to species Joe uncovered a research paper that described a species known scientifically as Atmetochilus songsangchotei. These are commonly referred to as the Thai funnel trapdoor spider. We received two of them and they are settling in quite nicely. We may offer one at the next whiteplains expo, however that depends on if Joe is willing to share 🤣.

We have some beautiful cbb Scolopendra polymorpha "Sonoran Green" plings. They are eating well on small crickets and red headed cockroaches. We have had these for about a year. Still debating on if we want to ✈️ these out or keep them and try to breed them. Let us know in the comments below ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Some fun shots Steve took of the adult beetles we currently have! Left is a Smooth death feigning beetle and right is a blue death feigning beetle. Both are super easy beetles to keep, breeding is a bit more complicated. We are currently working towards being able to offer cbb blue death feigning beetles! However in the meanwhile we have recently restocked on them.

If interested please pm us for a full availability list.

We are currently in the process of building a website so that is something for all of us to look forward to!

A fun little outreach we did recently for cub scout pack 138 for their blue and gold ceremony. We brought out some unique animals and hopefully inspired a few scouts to take the environment and the animals within it more seriously than scouts already do!! In Steven's hand (Steven is on the left) we have a beautiful mountain horned dragon, and in Joe's hand (Joe is on the right) there is a stunning children's python. We know it's hard to see the animals but seeing how much fun the scouts had is easy to see. If you are interested in having us attend an event of yours please email [email protected] and in the subject put outreach! We hope to see you soon

Sorry for the poor photo quality these are both very fast spiders. However we were feeding some of the slings today and figured let's grab a few shots. The first 3 pictures are white-banded fishing spiders (no more available ATM these are for breeding) and the last 3 pics are Lichen Huntsman spiders (there will be some available soon)

We are trying to get on a consistent posting schedule, please let us know what you want to see more of and we will include that along with your regularly scheduled programming lol.

So today is Joe's birthday and as owner and operator of Ectothermic Endeavors all he asks as a present is that if you've ever got an animal from him give us a little update either in the comments or via dm. We all love hearing updates at the expos so let's hear them here too.

I love working with all the animals I am fortunate enough to work with everyday. However some days end up very long, like tonight where it is 11:40pm and I am changing caterpillar food and feeding butterflies. As tiring as it is I would not want to be doing anything else.

If you remember those black swallowtail caterpillars I posted here are 3 out of the 7 that pupated and emerged as butterflies (3 look really close to emerging and 1 is eh). They have already mated and I started seeing eggs today. (They have been adults for about 5 to 6 days now)

I have to say for my first time rearing butterflies its been a blast. I definitely need a few more species.

Black swallowtail caterpillars (Papilio polyxenes). I have never raised butterflies before so this has been a rather fun venture. (I have raised many of silk moths). Black swallowtails are actually my favorite native butterfly so I figured what better species to start with. The eventual breeding of these will be a bit trickier than with the silk moths because butterflies live a bit longer and need to be fed and from my understanding need live host in the cage they are in to lay eggs (if I am wrong with the live host please lmk). If this goes well maybe here at Ectothermic Endeavors we will begin to raise more species of butterflies.
