Central Park Zoo

The Central Park Zoo is part of an effort to save wildlife that began 120 years ago with the creation of the New York Zoological Society, an organization founded on science and hope which has since grown to become the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Penguin chick swim lessons are now in session! Well, sort of. Most penguin chicks can swim naturally, but they can be hesitant at first and need encouragement to take their first plunge.

As you can see in this video, our macaroni chick takes to the shallow water pool of their behind-the-scenes area naturally. But our gentoo penguin chick took a bit more coaxing. After observing the macaroni chick swim for a while, our gentoo penguin learned from him. We supervise our penguin chicks until we see they are strong swimmers and can go in and out of the water on their own. According to their keepers, both chicks have passed the swim test and have 24/7 access to the shallow pool now. At this stage we can prepare them to join the rest of the colony on exhibit.

Keeper Katie and Vet Tech Sarah are taking a routine blood sample from one of our snow leopards. At the Central Park Zoo, our snow leopards are trained to position their tail through an opening in their enclosure for a voluntary blood draw. This helps our team monitor their health without the associated risks of anesthesia.

Nobody “sploots” like our snow leopard, Valens!

The term “splooting” gained popularity on social media and refers to when an animal sprawls out, usually face down with all legs extended. This body positioning is actually a good way for animals to cool down, and despite having access to his air conditioned den behind the scenes, Valens is a big fan of flopping down in the shade of the trees.

Oh, to be a brown bear with a personal waterfall to cool off. During the sweltering summer days, you can find our grizzly bears enjoying a refreshing dip in both shallow and deep pools in their habitat.

Happy ! Did you know that there are more than 5,000 species of lizards in the world? Lizards encompass a wide array of species, including geckos, monitors, chameleons, iguanas, anoles, and skinks.

And despite popular belief, there are some lizards that make vocal sounds! For example, geckos have been known to chirp, click, and squeak, while gila monsters and blue-tongued skinks will hiss at potential predators. Learn more about these dynamic reptiles on a visit to the Tropic Zone at Central Park Zoo.

‘Tis the season for Atlantic puffin chicks! It’s breeding season for these stunning birds found in the Polar Circle building. Over the past few weeks, the adult birds have been taking artificial grass to their burrows which they use to line their nests. In these photos you can see how they decorate their burrows with the grass, and that our keepers are routinely checking in on them for any new additions. Stay tuned for puffin updates!

The zoo is buzzing with activity! Recently, we received a new honeybee hive from our partners at the Bee Conservancy. In these photos you can see the installation of the new hive.

Amy Yambor, Coordinator of Volunteers at Central Park Zoo, has spearheaded this program. We hope to educate visitors not only on the value that honeybees bring, but to celebrate global bee diversity — there are over 20,000 species of bees worldwide! The bees arrived in late July and zoo staff are often stationed near the hives to answer guest questions and discuss the importance of bee conservation.

We recently transferred six Mandarin ducks to the Waterfowl Pond in the Tisch Children’s Zoo. The ducks were hatched at the zoo this spring. We hope you can stop by soon to see them!

Mandarin ducks are native to eastern parts of Russia, China, the Korean peninsula, and Japan and are among the most beautiful duck species. They are highly social and frequently fly together in large flocks. During migration, they can fly up to 500 miles in one day!

DYK that many of our keepers start out as animal care interns at the zoo? These photos provide a window into some of the important work that our interns help us with.

In these photos, our summer polar interns Josh and Zoe are observing a chinstrap penguin nest. They are recording how often the parents are feeding the newly hatched chick. This information is critical to penguin care during the breeding season.

Tropic Zone interns learn husbandry for a wide variety of species. In one photo intern Alexander is doing behavioral observation on birds in the aviary and recording what he sees to share with the keepers. In another photo, he’s learning how to prepare diets in the commissary with Keeper Katie.

Tisch Children’s Zoo interns work primarily with the domestic animal collection and the aviary birds. In these photos, intern Maxwell is grooming goats with Senior Keeper Tumeca and intern Isabella prepares to distribute food in the aviary.

WCS’s animal care internships provide excellent opportunities for individuals interested in becoming zookeepers; interns receive hands-on education and training in animal husbandry, observation, enrichment, and more. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/44VAjpl

We recently welcomed TWO male black and white ruffed lemur babies to our lemur family. The newest additions to our ruffed lemur troop, seen in their off-exhibit access area at the zoo, were born in June.

Our young lemurs are growing quickly thanks to the attention and instruction of their mother and our diligent keepers and veterinary team. In this video, you can see the infants and their mother enjoying a nutritious fruit and veggie salad. With these new additions, our ruffed lemur troop now consists of four males and one female.

We introduced male trumpeter swan, Harvey, to female swan, Sarah, in December 2023. Although both birds are too young for breeding, the two swans are paired up and getting along swimmingly!

One-year-old Harvey still has some of his juvenile gray feathers, while 3-year-old Sarah is all white. This is an ongoing story, stay tuned for more swan pairing updates.

We have just welcomed a macaroni penguin chick to our colony! In this video, the chick is under the close, watchful eye of mother Puttanesca and father Tortellini. The chick hatched on June 3, and this marks the first time we have had a Macaroni pair successfully raise their chick, in the past we have foster reared or hand reared macaroni penguin chicks.

Penguin nesting season is in full swing at the zoo! These photos show our gentoo, macaroni, chinstrap, and king penguins incubating eggs on their nests. Antarctic penguins build nests of small rocks since there are no plants in their natural habitat. Our keepers add rocks to the exhibit each year and the penguins use them to construct their nests.

We’ll be on penguin chick watch, keep an eye on our page for more updates!

We’ve got a new baby on board! The newest addition to our collared lemur family was born on April 28 to Celine and Quentin.

The young lemur is on exhibit in the Tropic Zone but is staying very close to mom, never leaving her body. Senior Keeper Megan tells us that Celine took quickly to being a mother and has been very protective. The baby lemur is just starting to get curious, reaching up for perches, but is still nursing and dependent on mom. Stay tuned for more updates!

Spot the stunning scarlet ibis in the Tropic Zone next time you visit! These elegant birds use their long, slender beaks to forage for food in shallow water and mud. Their saturated scarlet-colored plumage comes from the carotenes found in the foods they eat, which include a variety of crustaceans, mollusks, and insects.
